Snapchat Report (ICP205)

  1. 1. Jariyaporn Seenay 585102425552 ICP 205 29th March 2016 Snapchat Snapchat is a free messaging application (in-app purchases such as filters are exclusively for iOS devices) that was created by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown Poster on September 2011. It is available on the App Store for Apple and on the Play Store for Android with about 60 million total installs and 16.5 million active users each day. Before getting started with the applications, users are often advised to be aware of the Snapchat Language. Details are given below: ▪ Snapchatters: Snapchat users. ▪ Snaps: Photos or videos taken via Snapchat (you can send a snap to a snapchatter, but it can only be viewed by the recipient for one to 10 seconds) ▪ Snapback: A reply to a snap. ▪ Story: A snap you can broadcast to followers. (recipients can view it an unlimited amount of times in 24 hours, and you can also post multiple snaps to your story in one day to create a narrative of sorts) ▪ Scores: The total number of snaps you have sent and received. (appears next to your name in friends' contact lists and vice versa) ▪ Chat: A feature that lets you privately/directly message friends. ▪ Here: A feature that lets you start a live video chat within a direct message. Snapchat is an application perfect for sharing moments. You can take a photo or a video, add a caption or doodle, and send it to a friend or add it to your Snap Story to share with some or all of your friends. Friends can view Snaps for a maximum duration of 10 seconds and minimum duration of 1 second, and then it disappears. The simplistic features of Snapchat promotes ease of use for the application users who are commonly known as Snapchatters.
  2. 2. But what makes Snapchat so popular that it has been a go-to app for millennials when it comes to messaging? The answer how it’s extremely unique. It’s all about privacy – All snaps sent to other people will be deleted as soon as the timer runs out and it has been stated by Snapchat itself on their website, “Snapchat servers are designed to automatically delete Snaps after they’ve been viewed by all recipients. Opened Snaps typically cannot be retrieved from Snapchat's servers by anyone, for any reason. Snapchat servers are designed to automatically delete unopened Snaps after 30 days.” However, for privacy reasons, you will most definitely be notified whenever someone screenshots a snap or a chat. You will also be able to control who you share it with and how many people will be able view your snaps in your stories. It is not a popularity contest – When social media platforms first began publishing numbers of friends and followers, it elevated teenage social insecurity and anxiety to new heights. Snapchat doesn’t have that feature and it’s impossible to see how many friends another user has so nobody is competing with each other over how popular the other person is. Everything is in real time – Snapchat’s real-time features give your audience a direct access to your special event and keep them updated, no matter where they are. The stories are raw, updated in real-time, and can only be viewed within 24 hours. Through snaps, users can show the world who they are in the exact moment. It is the ultimate tool for product endorsement – This method is highly effective for a convincing advertisement. Although Snapchat has filters, it is not nearly enough for Photoshop tendencies and you are unable to make extreme touchups. You will be able to guarantee how genuine your product/service is. You are able to transfer money – It is not only limited to a messaging application! For your convenience, you are able to transfer funds through Snapchat using Snapcash only by agreeing with their terms and policies (Being 18 and above) then filing out your bank and credit or debit card information. However, you will only be able to send cash to people who are in your Snapchat contact list. On 2012, Facebook launched an application to compete with Snapchat called Poke. The application lets you “Poke” friends with a message, photo, or video. Like Snapchat, you can choose how long your friend(s) can view your Poke. Also like Snapchat, your friends need to hold down your Poke to view it. Poke’s biggest strength over Snapchat is the built-in
  3. 3. ecosystem of all of your Facebook friends. You do not need to create an account as it uses your Facebook login information to be able to use it. In late 2013s, Facebook co-founder – Mark Zuckerberg offered $3 billion to buy Snapchat. Despite various negations, Snapchat has declined the offer. To summarize, Snapchat is a mobile app that uses the device's camera to capture Snaps. Mobile data or WiFi technology allows the users to send and receive "self-destructing" photos and videos. It’s is a simplistic and straight forward application that considers the user’s privacy. It is not a competition for popularity. Timing is essential and everything is live. It is the perfect application that various businesses can use to prove the authenticity of their products which will in turn boost their customer’s trust. It’s convenient as you do not need to go to the nearest bank branch to transfer funds as it is also included in the application.
