NAF support in COmmon Core Standards

  1. 1. NAF Review for Staff February 6,2013 1
  2. 2.  Learning Intention ◦ You will learn about how NAF supports the Common Core State Standards(CCSS) and about how teachers in core content areas can support the NAF academy theme content at WHS-IT  Success Criteria ◦ You will be successful when you can:  You can use NAF content to support CCSS reinforcement in your classroom  You can incorporate NAF academy themes in one of your lessons.
  3. 3.  Can you remember what NAF stands for and how it supports WHS-IT?
  4. 4.  It is a network of high schools in most urban districts that focus on careers in the curriculum i.e. pathways.
  5. 5.  Which academies are present at Washington?
  6. 6. Engineering Hospitality & Tourism Information Technology
  7. 7.  Can you name these pillars?
  8. 8.  Academy Development and Structure  Curriculum and Instruction  Advisory Boards  Work-Based Learning
  9. 9.  Today we will focus on the Curriculum and Instruction pillar of the NAF model.  In particular, we want to look at the following standard:  Standard 3.1: Program of Study/Integration ◦ “The academy uses NAF curriculum and fully integrates it with the core subject area content.” ◦ 3.1. a. The academy program of study includes four NAF courses* by completion of the academy program with themes from these courses integrated into core academic course content(*or approved alternatives)
  10. 10.  Each NAF course has a Word Document that references individual lessons with CCSS addressed in the lesson  WEB DESIGN Cross Reference  CUSTOMER SERVICE Cross Reference  All curricula for NAF courses are on Staff Shared Drive.
  11. 11.  We have a sample list of academic (career cluster) standards, enrichment ideas, and integration ideas by academy theme.  Please discuss in your academy groups: What pieces of these integration ideas would you be able to reinforce or use as part of lessons in your classes?
  12. 12.  How can core content (Math, ELA, Social Studies, Science) and other teachers plan lessons that support their respective academy themes?  What content from your academy theme can you incorporate/reinforce in your lessons?
  14. 14.  How can you develop a multidisciplinary lesson plan with a teacher in another content area that addresses the NAF and CCSS?  Next month: ◦ Before our next meeting, I would like for you to take time in your department to construct a sample of a multidisciplinary lesson or unit tied to one of our pathways that implements the CCSS in one of the core content classes of your department.
  15. 15.  Where did the standards overlap?  What standard(s) really stood out to you because it was a good idea or well-written?  How do you think these standards compare to professional standards?
