WordCamp Ottawa 2016 Frameworks for Freelancers

Editor's Notes

  1. Hi Yall! This is really for beginners.. So please eye roll quietly if its too elemental. Sales background.. Graphic designer since 1995- all self taught 2009, art biz. Needed website- built it on Concrete 5 2010 hired by crazy guy- Davis Media Group - Web.com (Roll Eyes) Looked at all others- Drupal, Joomla, SquareSpace First site? Business rebuild. End of 2010- flipped sign to Spinbird I currently maintain over 60 websites, and am now completely referral based.
  2. Beginning Freelance Typical process: Consult with client Agree on price Get advance (yay) Have Client pick out a theme..
  3. Figure out specifics Fonts, colors, wireframes, etc. Install, WordPress, Then- OMG The black Hole
  4. This was present on every project for me at almost this exact time..
  5. Theme Fusion, Mojo Themes, Organic themes, Themify, Theme junkie.. The list goes on and on The WordPress.org Theme directory has over 3800 as of today.
  6. Dah dah dah DUH
  7. You can really get LOST IN THE WOODS on this one. Choices are endless- but you have finally gotten through the selection process. You install the theme, and are giddy with excitement at the process! Yay! Let’s Build a website!! Then you Log into the customizer Options for the Theme...
  8. I have NO IDEA How this stupid thing works! OMG- Where are the options- Even worse? What the heck are all these stupid options???
  9. 3 Days of Hunting, Googling, reading Documentation, etc.. You might know how to work the damn thing. Or not.. But you bravely go on through, making changes all the way.. CSS? Write it! Customize all the things
  10. Update to that Themeforest theme- Overrides everything you did.
  11. Now What????
  12. _Underscores _Quark Literally a blank canvas. Great- if you are Picasso
  13. What is a child theme? A child theme is a theme that inherits the functionality and styling of another theme, called the parent theme. Child themes are the recommended way of modifying an existing theme.
  14. So- Let’s get started with some examples!
  15. What I am about to tell you WILL HELP YOU SAVE TIME You won’t believe it till you do it. Also, Pre-coded the correct way, so the foundation is always solid. Not the case with ThemeForest Well Marked code- Greyed out details that make your desired customizations easy to find and change Easy to pass on to someone else
  16. Frameworks kill several birds with well, extra lasers
  17. Starting at the base of the child theme- you can customize a little- FANCY Or a Lot- functions, CSS, etc.. FANCIER
  18. Kinda like Star Trek canon being the base but not the result in “Star Trek” 2013. :P Install Parent theme (Framework) The process is the same every time- saves HUGE TIME
  19. This is installed second- and activated at that time. At that point, you will see new styles if you chose a built out child theme This is where the fun starts. Make Magic. The perfect playground for code- as much or as little as you want to do. And- remember that theme update? Not now-  child themes are rarely updated- so your customizations stay till YOU change them So, choose a framework and learn it..
  20. DEEPLY Once you know your framework- you have automatically shaved off 3-4 days of research and learning (peck learning) Soon- when a client talks about what they want their site too look like- you can see it in your mind already- and you won’t ever get lost in the woods again. Since they are code and rule specific- they do have learning curves- which we will talk about in a little while
  21. My Path- why I chose these particular 4
  22. Been around since 2008 Builder framework A ton of plugins and child themes Educational resources and continuous new learning material.
  23. I give this one 7.5 out of 10- mainly because of the interface. Along with the great customizations you can do, comes a ton of options.. Can be overwhelming
  24. As of this week- here are the Builder Purchase Options- Get in for as little as $80
  25. Includes: Entire library of Themes All Plugins All training Sync Pro Stash Unbranded Tutorials (on my website for clients now)
  26. Now AKA WP Canvas- In 2009-10 they had a ton of really cool themes Now, Canvas and Storefront are the main ones. Storefront is a definite framework option for an ECommerce store- very product and selling focused
  27. 4.5- you can pretty much just customize with settings- super easy. To add more functionality, you can really go to town on your child theme.
  28. Storefront has child themes.. Currently 13 available.
  29. I removed the underlines because it cluttered the text, and it’s clear this is a URL. Of course feel free to put revert it.
  30. 4 on learning curve
  31. Learning Curve 7-8.. Depending on
  32. Your AHA moment. It is written differently than most out there- Relies on hooks within WordPress to make things happen- but once you get it- you just GET IT
  33. Giant community. Probably one of the largest out there
  34. On Price- Pro Plus package (the whole shebang- $499.95- gives you new themes as they come out, and also 3rd party themes.
