Heat-Related Stress in Older Adults Many issues can exacerbate the effects of extreme heat for older adults: • Cardiovascular issues can become a bigger concern • Prescription drugs can affect someone’s capability to thermoregulate or that block nerve impulses2 • Life-sustaining devices can go out during power outages • People who need constant access to oxygen, prescription drugs, or other consumable medical resources Some people may not feel comfortable leaving their homes during a heat wave. Their vulnerability to thermal extremes is increased when they have more than one health issue. How to Recognize the Signs of Heat Related Stress Recognize the CDC’s signs of heat-related distress in older adults, and find stay-cool tips for older adults.
