My work encompasses a multidisciplinary approach to characterizing, combating, and preventing microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). Corrosion in the U.S. is estimated to cause billions of dollars worth of damage, and MIC accounts for upwards of 50% of those losses. MIC is corrosion induced by microorganisms such as aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, algae, and microalgae that can corrode via mechanisms like cathodic/anodic depolarization, hydrogen production, metal reduction, and production of corrosive metabolites.
