Powerpoint presentation for technology

 1. 1. How to read a Poem
When you read a poem, concentrate on these two questions:
1) How does the poem make me feel?
2) What does the poem make me think of?
What is poetry really about?
2. 2. The Dead Poets Society:
See also: The Dead Poets Society
3. 3. Guided Imagery in English
What is guided imagery?
Allows you to explore concepts visually by connecting what
you “see” in your mind to what you will read.
Allows you to access what you know and match it to the information in
a text. In doing so, you build on the meaning that you already have.
Allows you to connect what is taking place in your life,
or the world with what you are reading.
4. 4. The whole idea of it makes me feel
like I'm coming down with something,
something worse than any stomach ache
or the headaches I get from reading in bad light—
a kind of measles of the spirit, a mumps of the psyche,
a disfiguring chicken pox of the soul.
You tell me it is too early to be looking back,
but that is because you have forgotten
the perfect simplicity of being one
and the beautiful complexity introduced by two.
But I can lie on my bed and remember every digit.
At four I was an Arabian wizard.
I could make myself invisible
by drinking a glass of milk a certain way.
At seven I was a soldier, at nine a prince.
But now I am mostly at the window
watching the late afternoon light.
Back then it never fell so solemnly
against the side of my tree house,
and my bicycle never leaned against the garage
as it does today,
all the dark blue speed drained out of it.
This is the beginning of sadness, I say to myself,
as I walk through the universe in my sneakers.
It is time to say good-bye to my imaginary friends,
time to turn the first big number.
It seems only yesterday I used to believe
there was nothing under my skin but light.
If you cut me I could shine.
But now when I fall upon the sidewalks of life,
I skin my knees. I bleed.
On Turning Ten By Billy Collins
5. 5. How do we understand Poetry?
Think back to “Turning on Ten” How/ why did you relate to this poem?
You relate to it through IMAGES, also known as Imagery!
6. 6. Poetic devices: Playing with meaning

Imagery:

A set of mental images or pictures

Metaphor:

Comparing two things without using the words “like” or “as”.

Simile:

Comparing two words using “like” or “as”.

Personification:

Giving human feelings/ qualities to something that is not alive.
7. 7. Metaphor
He has the heart of a lion.
You are the sun in my sky.
A light in a sea of darkness.
It is raining cats and dogs.
You are the light in my life.
You had better pull your socks up.

Jumping for joy.

Apple of my eye.

The Road not Taken by Robert Frost:
8. 8. Simile
Life is like a box of chocolates.
Life is a journey. Enjoy the Ride.
9. 9. And the point is?
A poem does four things:
It tells a story.
It presents a picture.
It expresses an emotional experience.
It Reflects on life.
10. 10. Where can you find MS Powerpoint features used?
Create a slideshow from a template: The template I have used throughout this presentation is the very first choice on the ‘design’ section. All but ONE slide has this as a template in the background.
Slide #7 is hidden because I’m not sure whether or not I will need to provide students with this information when I am teaching it to my class – it is dependant on how well they grasp metaphor and my explanation.
Add video / audio: I added a video on slide two- The Dead Poets Society. Although you probably won’t be able to see this because it is saved on my computer. Therefore I added a link to the video on YouTube. The video is included on here because at the school I am going to be teaching at again in a few weeks, they do not have the ability to connect to YouTube. There is also thunder added on slide three.
Include graphics: On slides 3 and 4 I included graphics in the bottom right hand corner.
Using slide effects: As you can see on slide I used a custom animation to make the box man in the corner fly in. There is also many effects added to various slide from custom animations.
Adding various texts, contents, list and notes: I changed the text to ‘corbel’ and added colors to many of them.
