Measuring and enhancing
the level of FAIRness of research data

“FAIRness” is a gradual quality
• How to measure the degree of FAIRness? Different approaches:
new data, existing data, new software, …
• DANS focuses on the degree of FAIRness of data in repositories:
• We promote actual reuse, not just reusability
• We know about trustworthy repositories*
• We believe that good digital repositories help to make and to keep data FAIR:
e.g. provide a PID, use standard metadata, advise on file formats
* DANS EASY: certified long-term repository for research data

DANS metrics tool: context and examples 1/2
The 12 questions don’t strictly follow the FAIR principles, but want to raise
awareness of long-term preservation:
e.g. no question about PID, and extra questions if needed.

FAIR is already here – it’s just not evenly distributed (free after William Gibson)
My question to you: we come from research – how useful is this for GLAM?
Any questions for me?
