  2. 2.  Total Defence was introduced in 1984 and was adapted from Switzerland and Sweden. Why did we adopt it ? •Being young and small, we cannot afford to maintain a regular armed forces. •Wars are no longer limited to the battlefield.
  3. 3.  Total Defence is divided into 5 aspects.
  4. 4. Being operationally ready in times of crisis. Being able to meet all kinds of challenges. Deterring aggression.
  5. 5. •Macro level – The overview Commitment to defence spending Enables the SAF men to equip and train itself
  6. 6. •Micro level – Our attitude, actions and responsibilities. For MALES… Keep fit for National Service and take trainings seriously. For FEMALES… BE SUPPORTIVE !!
  7. 7. • Knowing what to do during emergencies. • Being vigilant and alert at all times.
  8. 8. •Macro level – The overview Provides for the safety and basic needs of Singaporeans during emergencies and wartimes. Role of the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
  9. 9. CIVIL DEFENCE •Micro level – Our attitude, actions and responsibilities. Take part in civil defence exercises. (Eg. Water/food rationing, public warning system, bomb shelter) Pick up life saving skills.
  10. 10. Staying relevant and competitive through rapid change and development. Putting in place robust economic systems that can continue to function in times of crisis.
  11. 11. •Macro level – The overview Stockpile essential items. (Eg. Food & water and having a system to share resources between private and public sectors). Sound economic policies and a well-trained labour force.
  12. 12. ECONOMIC DEFENCE •Micro level – Our attitude, actions and responsibilities. Lifelong learning Continual skills upgrading
  13. 13. Singaporeans of all races and religions work and live together in harmony. Helping fellow Singaporeans.
  14. 14. oMacro level – The big picture Racial and religious tolerance. Equal opportunities for all. The spirit of volunteerinsm.
  15. 15. •Micro level – Our attitude, actions and responsibilities. •Show tolerance and respect for one another’s cultures, religions and lifestyles. •Show care and concern for the less fortunate.
  16. 16. Having pride in, and being loyal and committed to our country, Singapore. Having the will, resolve (determination) and resilience to overcome challenges.

  19. 19. KEY MESSAGE ! Everyone can play a part in Total Defence. Always be ready to undertake any challenges and opportunities in our path. Stay vigilant and not be complacent. To be ready and prepared at all times. STAY POSITIVE !!
