How do different colours effect us?
We all know the three primary colours, they are yellow, blue, and red.
In theory these colours can be mixed to make all the other colours. If
you are to mix all the three primary colours, in theory, you will get
black!
To get a secondary colour you mix two of the primary colours together
to create one of the three secondary colours. They are green, violet
(purple), and orange. Yellow and blue make green, blue and red make
violet , and yellow and red make orange!
These are also known as intermediate colours. These colours are
made by mixing bordering primary and secondary colours in the
wheel. These six colours are yellow - green, blue- green, blue- violet,
red - violet, red-orange, and yellow - orange.
Yellow is a happy colour as it screams optimism, warmth and joy! It's
also known to provide creative thoughts as well as bringing clarity to
the mind.
- Psychologically, yellow is the happiest colour in the spectrum.
- Yellow can in fact make you hungry as it stimulates appetite.
- Yellow is the colour of courage in Japan, but is the colour of mourning
in Egypt.
- Optimism
- Engages Memory
- Mentally Stimulating
- Promotes Communication
According to the human eye, green takes up the most space in the colour
spectrum and comes in second place as a favourite colour. With green being the
colour that most appears in the natural world it is ideal to be used as a backdrop,
because we are used to seeing it everywhere!
- In medieval times brides would wear green dresses as a symbol of fertility.
- The original Santa suit was green; Coca-Cola changed his suit to red in the 1950s.
- The Egyptians thought green was a sacred colour that would bring hope and joy!
All the floors of the temples were green.
- Harmonious
- Soothing Properties
- Physically and Mentally Relaxing
- Helps alleviate depression, nervousness, and anxiety
Blue is a trustworthy colour, it's also seen as dependable and the colour
of commitment. Blue is a constant colour in our lives as it is the colour
of the sky and ocean. The colour has spiritual elements that can invoke
rest as it causes the body to produce calming chemicals.
- Blue appeals equally to both men and women, making it the least
'gender specific' colour.
- 8% percent of the world's population have blue eyes.
- The owl is the only bird that can see the colour blue.
- Calming
- Cools moods
- Helps intuition
The red's stimulation and the calming of blue come together to make purple, a
colour of mystic and royal qualities. Purple is often favoured by very creative and
eccentric types and is known to be the favourite colour of adolescent girls.
- Comic books with purple on their covers sold better during the Silver
Age of comic books.
- The origin of the colour purple came from a dye made of mucus glands
from a tropical sea snail.
- Darker shades of purple are linked with intelligence.
- Uplifting
- Boosts Creativity
- Calms Mind and Nerves
- Brings a Sense of Spirituality
Vibrant pinks have the same high energy qualities that you get from red,
whereas brighter pinks are seen as youthful, fun and exciting! Pinks
association with romance comes from toning down the passion of red
with white, and it also resembles the blush of a young woman's cheeks.
- The name pink was given to the colour in late 17th century.
- Pink is often known as the 'colour of love' and is widely used on
Valentine's Day.
- A pink ribbon is used to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness.
- Reduce erratic behaviour
- Encourage Action and Confidence
- Stimulate energy and increase blood pressure
Red is a colour that can cause a person to immediately focus attention
on a particular subject, hence why it is used for warning signs. Red is a
stimulant and is inherently an exciting colour!
- Bees don't see red, instead red flowers get pollinated by birds, butterflies,
bats & the wind.
- Chinese brides wear red wedding dresses as they think the colour red is
lucky.
- Red is also the Russian word for 'Beautiful'.
- Increases the heartbeat
- Stimulates a person's energy
- Provides protection from fears
- Boosts enthusiasm and passion
Orange is a close relation of red and has its stimulating properties, but
also brings the happiness of yellow and combines them to make this
colour. Orange is seen as a fun and flamboyant colour that radiates
energy and warmth.
- The name comes from the Sanskirt word for glory. It was also called 'Wisdom
Ray'.
- During the Elizabethan Era, only noble people were allowed to wear orange.
- Frank Sinatra even said, 'Orange is the happiest of colours.
- Triggers appetite
- Stimulates activity
- Prompts Socialisation
White is associated with a number of things, projecting purity,
cleanliness, and neutrality. A doctors white coat for cleanliness, the
brides white dress symbolises purity, and the white picket fence
resembles a safe and happy home!
- The ancient Greeks would wear white to bed to ensure they had
pleasing dreams.
- In the bible, white is the colour of the divine.
- There are more shades of white paint available commercially than any
other colour!
- Aids Clarity
- Fresh Thinking
- Encourages us to overcome obstacles.
The colour of grey is the colour of wisdom, knowledge, and intellect.
The colour itself is sleek, classic, and perceived as long-lasting! It's also
a dignified colour, conservative, and carries authority.
- The colour grey represents neutralism.
- If someone is feeling grey, they are usually unhappy.
- It's possible for the human eye to distinguish about 500 shades of
grey.
- Unsettling
- Generates Expectations
The colour black is powerful and authoritative. This is because black can
evoke strong emotions and too much can be seen as overwhelming. It's
also associated with sophistication and is evident in judge’s robes,
limousines, tuxedos, and priest’s attire, which are all usually black.
-Black is popular in fashion as it makes people appear thinner.
-The black belt is the highest awarded belt in some martial arts.
- Black can imply weight. People will assume a black box weighs more than a
white one.
- Restfulness
- Inconspicuous feeling
- Mysterious, evokes potential

Infinity Paint - The Psychology of Colour

  • 1.
  • 2. How do different colours effect us?
  • 3. We all know the three primary colours, they are yellow, blue, and red. In theory these colours can be mixed to make all the other colours. If you are to mix all the three primary colours, in theory, you will get black! To get a secondary colour you mix two of the primary colours together to create one of the three secondary colours. They are green, violet (purple), and orange. Yellow and blue make green, blue and red make violet , and yellow and red make orange! These are also known as intermediate colours. These colours are made by mixing bordering primary and secondary colours in the wheel. These six colours are yellow - green, blue- green, blue- violet, red - violet, red-orange, and yellow - orange.
  • 4. Yellow is a happy colour as it screams optimism, warmth and joy! It's also known to provide creative thoughts as well as bringing clarity to the mind. - Psychologically, yellow is the happiest colour in the spectrum. - Yellow can in fact make you hungry as it stimulates appetite. - Yellow is the colour of courage in Japan, but is the colour of mourning in Egypt. - Optimism - Engages Memory - Mentally Stimulating - Promotes Communication
  • 5. According to the human eye, green takes up the most space in the colour spectrum and comes in second place as a favourite colour. With green being the colour that most appears in the natural world it is ideal to be used as a backdrop, because we are used to seeing it everywhere! - In medieval times brides would wear green dresses as a symbol of fertility. - The original Santa suit was green; Coca-Cola changed his suit to red in the 1950s. - The Egyptians thought green was a sacred colour that would bring hope and joy! All the floors of the temples were green. - Harmonious - Soothing Properties - Physically and Mentally Relaxing - Helps alleviate depression, nervousness, and anxiety
  • 6. Blue is a trustworthy colour, it's also seen as dependable and the colour of commitment. Blue is a constant colour in our lives as it is the colour of the sky and ocean. The colour has spiritual elements that can invoke rest as it causes the body to produce calming chemicals. - Blue appeals equally to both men and women, making it the least 'gender specific' colour. - 8% percent of the world's population have blue eyes. - The owl is the only bird that can see the colour blue. - Calming - Cools moods - Helps intuition
  • 7. The red's stimulation and the calming of blue come together to make purple, a colour of mystic and royal qualities. Purple is often favoured by very creative and eccentric types and is known to be the favourite colour of adolescent girls. - Comic books with purple on their covers sold better during the Silver Age of comic books. - The origin of the colour purple came from a dye made of mucus glands from a tropical sea snail. - Darker shades of purple are linked with intelligence. - Uplifting - Boosts Creativity - Calms Mind and Nerves - Brings a Sense of Spirituality
  • 8. Vibrant pinks have the same high energy qualities that you get from red, whereas brighter pinks are seen as youthful, fun and exciting! Pinks association with romance comes from toning down the passion of red with white, and it also resembles the blush of a young woman's cheeks. - The name pink was given to the colour in late 17th century. - Pink is often known as the 'colour of love' and is widely used on Valentine's Day. - A pink ribbon is used to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness. - Reduce erratic behaviour - Encourage Action and Confidence - Stimulate energy and increase blood pressure
  • 9. Red is a colour that can cause a person to immediately focus attention on a particular subject, hence why it is used for warning signs. Red is a stimulant and is inherently an exciting colour! - Bees don't see red, instead red flowers get pollinated by birds, butterflies, bats & the wind. - Chinese brides wear red wedding dresses as they think the colour red is lucky. - Red is also the Russian word for 'Beautiful'. - Increases the heartbeat - Stimulates a person's energy - Provides protection from fears - Boosts enthusiasm and passion
  • 10. Orange is a close relation of red and has its stimulating properties, but also brings the happiness of yellow and combines them to make this colour. Orange is seen as a fun and flamboyant colour that radiates energy and warmth. - The name comes from the Sanskirt word for glory. It was also called 'Wisdom Ray'. - During the Elizabethan Era, only noble people were allowed to wear orange. - Frank Sinatra even said, 'Orange is the happiest of colours. - Triggers appetite - Stimulates activity - Prompts Socialisation
  • 11. White is associated with a number of things, projecting purity, cleanliness, and neutrality. A doctors white coat for cleanliness, the brides white dress symbolises purity, and the white picket fence resembles a safe and happy home! - The ancient Greeks would wear white to bed to ensure they had pleasing dreams. - In the bible, white is the colour of the divine. - There are more shades of white paint available commercially than any other colour! - Aids Clarity - Fresh Thinking - Encourages us to overcome obstacles.
  • 12. The colour of grey is the colour of wisdom, knowledge, and intellect. The colour itself is sleek, classic, and perceived as long-lasting! It's also a dignified colour, conservative, and carries authority. - The colour grey represents neutralism. - If someone is feeling grey, they are usually unhappy. - It's possible for the human eye to distinguish about 500 shades of grey. - Unsettling - Generates Expectations
  • 13. The colour black is powerful and authoritative. This is because black can evoke strong emotions and too much can be seen as overwhelming. It's also associated with sophistication and is evident in judge’s robes, limousines, tuxedos, and priest’s attire, which are all usually black. -Black is popular in fashion as it makes people appear thinner. -The black belt is the highest awarded belt in some martial arts. - Black can imply weight. People will assume a black box weighs more than a white one. - Restfulness - Inconspicuous feeling - Mysterious, evokes potential
