Nestled in the hills of Mill Valley just across the
Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, this cus-tom
home is the first LEED-H Platinum Certified
home in Marin County, and one of the first in the
state of California. This home is a statement of
what is possible in “high design and high sustain-ability.”
This project represents the collaborative
effort of a visionary group of partner companies,
who have come together to bring this first-of-its-kind
project to Marin County. The architectural
vocabulary is a careful balance between modern
sensibilities and the rustic, natural surroundings –
a modern cabin. Set deep into the hillside, nearly
20% of the home’s total square footage sits
below grade, taking maximum advantage of the
hill’s natural insulation. A central circulation core
connects four levels of living spaces, each of
which embraces the outdoors through expansive
windows and decks. Every window in the home
opens to a view of the trees, and many to a view
of the San Francisco skyline.

designed to provide views of water, golf and
lush landscape in every direction. The
beachfront facade features disappearing

of the five bedrooms is a suite, and the sec-ond

overlooking the sea. The kitchen also opens
to a large covered dining terrace right on
the beach.

This expansive villa in the exclusive com-munity
of Christophe Harbour is nestled
into a hillside and has been designed as a
compound of pavilions oriented to take
advantage of spectacular views toward
both Sandy Bank Bay and Christophe
Harbour. The architectural style, although
based in traditional British Colonial and
Caribbean vernacular with large over-hangs
on wooden brackets, exposed raf-ters
and tongue in groove ceilings, takes a
slightly more contemporary approach with
simple clean lines and modern details.
Local natural stone was used extensively
for architectural elements and for piers
that allow the pavilions to float over a cis-tern
which collects rainwater for irrigation.

This resort residential community is located
on Hainan Island, an immensely popular
resort destination in southern China. The
project consists of two parcels of land, both
adjacent to an existing hotel, which are
being developed to provide high-end
options for vacation ownership buyers. The
first phase consists of 110 villas for private
ownership. The second phase, picturesque-ly
sited on the banks of a lake, will also pro-vide
ownership units but can also be used
by the hotel as additional guest accommo-dations
on a lease-back basis. The resi-dences
are set amid meandering water-ways,
giving each guest a waterfront expe-rience
and creating a residential experi-ence
that blurs the line between indoor and
outdoor living. Environmental sensitivity
and the use of sustainable materials are
important components of the design.

balancing natural and built environ-ments.
Sited in clusters scattered through-out
the site, a total of 40 detached villas
are situated along the golf fairways, provid-ing
stunning vistas of open space and the
mountains beyond. The design of these
two and three-story homes employs an
‘organic’ approach to architecture, as build-ings
grow from the earth comprised of local
materials and a natural color palette. The
villa residents are served by a residence
club and a commercial village.

Set upon a beachfront parcel outside the
seaside resort town of Limassol on the

spectacular 180-degree views of the
Mediterranean Sea from every vantage
point. The 14 individually-designed homes
were conceived with a European
aesthetic that emphasizes a
contemporary architectural vocabulary
to create a “five-star modern” style.
Natural, locally-sourced materials, such
as local gavro stone, copper and white
plaster, reference regional architecture
and culture and, together with solar and
wind power, as well as gray-water use,
contribute to a sustainable approach to
design, construction and operation. An
adjacent hotel will offer 5-star amenities

provides a private, exclusive resort experi-ence,
while offering substantial green space
and community interaction. Though densely
clustered, each villa is designed as a garden
retreat with private indoor/outdoor spaces.
Five different villa types give resort home
buyers multiple options. Located along the
perimeter of the site, the townhouse build-ings
are larger in scale but incorporate ele-ments
such as covered roof terraces,
glassed corners, large overhangs and pro-tected
balconies, all of which help to break
down their massing and scale. Part of a
larger master-planned community, this
neighborhood is designed to promote walk-ability

developments.

This wellness retreat located within a
private estate on the San Francisco pen-insula
sits on its own one-acre site, but is
part of a larger master plan, serving as
an amenity to the main residence.
Within the constraints of constructing
two accessory structures on their own
piece of land, two simple building forms
have emerged that are connected to the
main residence and gardening conserva-tory
on either side. Isolated in its own
secluded environment, the buildings are
positioned in a way that welcomes the
visitor through an intimate spa court and
reorient the user to an expansive, gra-cious
garden experience beyond.
Traditional building materials of stone,
wood, and metal blend with the natural
environment but are applied with a con-temporary
aesthetic.

uniquely American vernacular that combines
influences from the shores of New England to
California’s craftsman bungalows. The resort is
a compilation of main lodge and cottages, with
30 rooms available in the main lodge and the
remainder provided in 3 and 4-bedroom cottages
scattered throughout the 28-acre site. Located
on the western shore of the peninsula, the lodge
is carefully placed to take advantage of sunsets
across Chesapeake Bay. The guest cottages can
be locked off in numerous configurations, for
rental as 2, 3 or 4-bedroom units with extensive
decks and common areas, or as single guest
rooms. The cottages are sited for views of the
bay, creek or the adjacent Jack Nicklaus golf
course. In addition to the guest accommoda-tions,

This exclusive enclave is being carefully

have been conceived as both large homes
and as corporate retreats, suitable for
both personal and business use. Within
each villa, a clear separation of family
and public entertaining spaces allows for
concurrent personal and business use.
The Beaux-Arts style, modeled on the ide-alized

C A L I F O R N I A
This unique resort and private residence club is
nestled on 23 wooded acres in the heart of the
California wine country. The remainder of the
157-acre site has been left undeveloped. The
property contains both resort and fractional
ownership units, each designed to blur the line
between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a
“bungalow-in-the woods” experience in which
the spectacular natural surroundings are the
most important amenity. Living and bedroom
spaces surround private cabanas (outdoor living
rooms) complete with outdoor fireplaces, light-ing
and comfortable furnishings. The resort
units range from 600 to 2,400 square feet of
indoor/outdoor space, and the fractional owner-ship
units average 3,200 square feet of space.
The architecture is a mix of indigenous natural
materials with steel and glass elements, empha-sizing
the indoor/outdoor lifestyle and casual
elegance that typify the Napa Valley.

Set into an oak-crowned knoll within a
50-acre operating vineyard, this dramatic
home offers a serene retreat for husband-and-
wife artists in the vast California wine
country. The exterior forms are an abstrac-tion
of the California-Mexican hacienda tra-dition.
In an unconventional use of the
expansive site, the house was designed to
focus inward, creating a tranquil environ-ment.
Windows were strategically placed
throughout the house to create picturesque
vignettes, with the only expanse of glass
reserved for the panoramic view toward the
Russian River below. The hillside location
offered the opportunity to create separate
floors for studio and living/entertaining
functions. The two-level scheme generated
a maximum site coverage and integrates
the major existing oak trees into the design
through a series of courtyards.

The goal for this project was to seize a
unique zoning opportunity to build a new
home on a desirable but never developed
corner site in a dense San Francisco
neighborhood. The design concept was
driven by the micro-features of the site
and the desire to create a contemporary
design expression that was rooted in
Northern California architectural and sus-tainable
ideals. The naturally sloping site
inspired the idea of a focal stair core
wrapped by private areas. Locating the
main living spaces on the top floor afford-ed
dramatic views of the San Francisco
skyline and garnered abundant natural
light lessening the need for electricity.
The corner location and internal spacial
organization created an exterior expres-sion
that creates a blend of strong hori-zontal
and vertical lines punctuated by a
cantilevered roof.
