Cell Phone: 917-817-2936 – Text me for a call back between 8am -8pm. Please include your name and number in the content of the text. You will receive a call back within 48 hours. Office hours: By appointment Practicum in Personal and Family Finance Required Texts: Keown, A. J. (2013). Personal Finance: Turning Money into Wealth (6h ed.) Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Prentice Hall. (ISBN 0-13-271916-9) (Note: There is a Kindle Edition.) Required Readings: Additional articles will be posted in the “Course Materials” section of our Bb classroom. Recommended Reference: Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). (2010). Washington, D.C.: American Psychological Association. Course Information: This course will be conducted as a hybrid, which means it will be partially online. There will be both in class and online assignments. It will be detailed in this syllabus. Course Expectations: When we meet at QC, it is expected that students attend class regularly. When we meet on Bb, it is expected that students check the Bb forums every other day that week and submit the homework on the due date. As the instructor, I will be checking the Bb postings almost daily. Course Description: Students will apply their understanding of family management and consumer finance to the solution of specific consumer problems of individuals and families learning to organize and operate a service dispensing financial information and counseling clients. Course Objectives: The student will be able to: 1. Provide information concerning family financial matters to individuals and groups. 2. Develop consumer education programs for various populations.
  2. 2. 3. Plan and implement family financial programs. Course Requirements: 1. On days designated as “Bb”, class will meet online. There will be a weekly homework assignment based on the reading. This will be your Case Study for that week. This must be submitted via email no later than 11:59 pm on the class date. 2. Everyone must participate in the weekly discussion board when we are meeting on “Bb”. A question will be posted and you must respond to the question initially by 11:59pm on the class date. Then, you must respond to a minimum of 3 postings of your classmates by the following “Bb” class. 3. Save everything into a MS Word Document first. Then, copy and paste the document into Black Board. This way if your computer happens to be uncooperative half-way through your response, then you have not lost your work. 4. On days designated as “QC”, class will meet in Keily Hall 417. Course Policies:  On days we meet at QC, please check your email after 2pm on class days. If there is a need for class to be cancelled, you will receive an email from me by 2pm. In this case, class will meet on Blackboard and the assignment will be detailed.  Attendance is required. It will be taken each time we meet throughout the semester. Attendance is part of your class participation grade.  All electronic devices that are not related to course work (cell phones, blackberries, sidekicks, pdas, etc.) must be turned off before entering the classroom. Of course, lap tops/tablets are permissible for course work. The first infraction of this will result in 10 points deducted from your final grade. Any subsequent infractions will result in 20 points deducted from your final grade.  All assignments must be computer generated. It is required to double space, use standard margins of no more than 1.25 inches and a font of 12 in either Arial or Times New Roman. Anything submitted outside of these guidelines will not be accepted. There will be no exceptions.  All work must be properly cited using the APA (American Psychological Association) Style. Any act of plagiarism is a violation of the Queens College Academic Policies and Procedures and will be reported to Queens College Administration for appropriate disciplinary action.  All work is due on the assigned date. Assignments will be accepted prior to the due date. After the due date, the grade will be dropped by 10 points per class days late. Example: Assignment due Wednesday, assignment handed in/emailed, if applicable, after 8pm on Wednesday; grade will be dropped 10 points. My advice is to hand in items on time or before the due date and do not work all the way up to the deadline. Computers and printers have a way of being uncooperative in various ways at the last minute. If an assignment is emailed, it must be time-stamped by the end of class on the due date for it to be considered “on time”. A hard copy of the assignment must be handed in by the next class.  Please feel free to email me with any questions. I check my email daily. I will make every effort to respond in a timely fashion.
  3. 3. Class Participation when we are on campus: Class participation includes but is not limited to attendance, active class involvement (based on the assigned readings), written and verbal communication and submitting assignments by the due date. Professionalism is also required as it pertains to your assignments, peers, guest speakers and the instructor. Professionalism incorporates proper social etiquette. If you arrive late to class, Do Not Walk in Front of the Speaker. Your peers and I will not appreciate it. Please take a seat quietly near the door you have entered from. Grading Rubric: Assignment Length Due Date Points #1 - Financial Resource Evaluation and Presentation 1 – 2 page paper and 5 minute presentation 10/12/11 50 points = paper 50 points = presentation #2– Financial Video/ Live Infomercial Completed Video (Groups of Two or Three and 2 minutes per person) 11/2/11 100 #3 Financial Current Events 1 page 11/23/11 (Part 1) and 12/2/11 (Part 2) 50 points = Part 1 (summary) 50 points = Part 2 (BB response) #4 – Case Study Assignments Chapter/reading selection presentation Weekly 250 (20 points each) Discussion Board Forums and Responses Participation Varied Check course schedule 100 QC Class Participation and Professionalism n/a Weekly 100 Final Exam n/a TBD – Finals week 250 TOTAL 1000

There are MS Power Point Slide Shows posted on Black Board to accompany the chapters that may be helpful. You will be required to post your answers and post a response to three of your classmates. Additional information for each assignment can be researched on the Internet. The following is information about writing and posting assignments to Blackboard and evaluating them. Writing & Posting Assignments  Assignments vary in length. Please see the specific questions for the details.  Type up assignments in Word (or another word processor) with a 12 pt. font, double spacing (if necessary), and one-inch margins. If you are using the new Microsoft Word 2007, you should save it as a Microsoft Word 97-2003 version, so others will be able to open it.  Assignments are due by 11:59pm on the assigned day. Please don’t wait until the last minute to post assignments.  Post assignments under the appropriate heading and use the title of the assignment and topic when you post it on Blackboard. For example: Discussion Case1: Chapter 2. This helps the other students identify which assignment you completed and the topic you wrote about.  Please post your answers directly into the thread you have created for the forum. Criteria to Evaluate Assignments Each assignment will be graded using the following criteria:  Clarity and Organization: Your thoughts are clearly conveyed and well organized.  Insight and evidence: Your written assignment demonstrates that you understand the reading and the posting to which you are responding.  Timely: Assignment is posted on or before the due date and time.  Mechanics: The format described above is followed, especially concerning spelling and grammar. Please read your work over before submitting it!
  7. 7. Online Discussions in the Discussion Board (DB) Online discussions are part of your overall grade in this class. In order to participate in online discussions, you must do the following:  Respond to a minimum of three (3) other student’s assignments in the class. Your response is expected to be intellectual and stimulating in order to promote discussion among your group members. Responses such as “Great idea!” or “I agree with you!” are not acceptable! If you agree with them (or not), tell them why.  You must respond back to the people who comment on your assignment. This is how an online discussion works! Do not wait too long to respond back.  After your assignment is posted to Blackboard, you must log-in for the online discussion at least every other day until the posted end date (one week after assignment due date).  As the instructor of the course, I will be more of a facilitator in the online discussions. I will be reading all your assignments, but I may not always comment on them. If you have not done a good job on your assignment, I will let you know personally through email. In essence, no news is good news!  Follow the Netiquette Guidelines for all online discussions. These are posted on Blackboard under Course Documents.
