Two-hand control stations can be used on stamping presses for setting operations. • The two-hand control is a safety-related function to help contain the location of the operator's hands outside the hazardous area, during a hazardous movement of the machine • The two-hand control system is defined in EN 574 and ISO 13851 standards • Its actuation requires a simultaneous operation by both hands on actuators, in order to start and maintain operation of a machine What is a two-hand control used for?   5. 5. The functional channel is represented by the two-hand control actuator device (S3 and S4) that corresponds to the input block. The safety controller or safety relay corresponds to the logic block(L1/2), which maintains the internal redundancy of the safety circuits. The output is represented by two redundant contactors (K1 and K2) that are monitored by the logic block (safety modules) to detect failure. • To initiate a dangerous movement with a two-hand control system, both actuators (two-hand control pushbuttons – S3 and S4 - see diagram below) must be activated simultaneously, which means within an interval less than 0.5 seconds to energize the contactors (K1 and K2) ‒ When at least one of the two pushbuttons is released, the energization is cancelled and remains blocked until both pushbuttons are released and pressed again synchronously • A logic device, a safety module or controller, which complies with the requirements of EN 574/ISO 13851 for two-hand control systems, should be used to monitor the operation and detect failure How should a two-hand control be electrically designed?   6. 6. • The control stations must be designed and installed such that they cannot be activated involuntarily • The protective effect of the two-hand control device must not be easily defeated or rendered inoperative • The safety distance between the control units and the hazardous zone must be sufficient to ensure that when only one operator is released, the hazardous zone cannot be reached before the dangerous movement has been completed or stopped ‒ According to the application and the machine design, the two-hand control station can be mounted either directly on the machine housing, or on a pedestal at a safe machine distance How should a two-hand control be mechanically designed?
