Schalk Louw Connectivism & Connective Knowledge 2009 Final Project

 1. 1. SchalkLouw
University Of Manitoba
Connectivism & Connective Knowledge 2009 Final Project
2. 2. Contents
The quality of my learning networks
Connectivism’s influence on the process of learning
Incorporation of Connectivism into the design and delivery of learning
3. 3. The quality of my learning networks
What is Connectivism?
The ability to construct and traverse knowledge networks.
Successful Networks?
Properties such as: Diversity, Autonomy, Openness, and Connectivity
Centrality in the network (Degree centrality, Betweenness centrality, Closeness centralty)
4. 4. The quality of my learning networks
Web 2.0 Tools for network building and interaction.
Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Delicious, Slideshare, Google Alerts, Moodle forum, The Daily, Blogs, Good old fashioned e-mail.
Are you learning on a daily basis?
How frequent is the contact with members of the network?
What is the quality of the information? (Reliable?)
5. 5. Connectivism’s influence on the process of learning
Learning need not be transferring of knowledge from lecturer to student. (one way traffic).
Educators should encourage students to form own networks (act as facilitators).
Learning through Connectivism enables “deep learning”.
Connections can last a life time.
Connections may lead to other networks.
Networks are dynamic and can change.
6. 6. Incorporation of Connectivism into the design and delivery of learning
Connectivism enables Deep learning.
As IDR at he University of the Free State, we try to incorporate Connectivism principles.
New LMS enables blogging
Peer assessment
Embedded web sites and blogs.
Open forum discussions.
Announcements from lecturers (Direction to create and join good networks.)
