Computer control of fermentation process

  1. 1. COMPUTER CONTROL OF FERMENTATION PROCESS SUBMITTED BY: K. Sanjay(BP211525), II M. Sc. Applied Microbiology, Sacred Heart College(Autonomous), Tirupattur. SUBMITTED TO: Dr. P. Saran raj, Head of Department of Microbiology, Sacred Heart College(Autonomous), Tirupattur.
  2. 2. The initial use of computers in the 1960s for modelling fermentation process control for production of glutamic acid and penicillin production. They are first discovered by Yamashita and Murao Three distinct areas of computer function were recognized by Nyiri INTRODUCTION:
  3. 3. The main function of a fermenter is to provide a controlled environment for the growth of microorganisms to obtain a desired product. It is used to large scale production in the industries. FERMENTOR:
  4. 4. Fermenter are used in the large scale production in the most industries.  Dairy production [milk, cheese, beer]  Antibiotic production [penicillin, streptomycin]  Enzyme production [amylase, protease]  Organic Acid production [citric acid.glutamic acid]  Vitamins production [vitamin B and A]
  5. 5.  Construction material.  Temperature control.  Aeration and agitation. FERMENTOR IMPORTAT PARTS
  6. 6. They are three distinct areas of computer function; logging of process data. Data analysis. process data. COMPUTER FUNCTION:
  7. 7. Data logging is performed by the data acguisition system which has both hardware and software components.  There is an interface between the sensors and the computer. The software should include the computer program for sequential scanning of the sensor signals and the procedure of data storage. LOGGING OF PROCESS DATA:
  8. 8.  Data reduction is performed by the data analysis system ,which is a computer program based on a series of selected mathematical equation.  The analysed information may then be put on a print out, fed into a data bank or utilized for process control. DATA ANALYSIS: [Reduction of logging data]
  9. 9.  Process control is also performed a computer program  Signals from the computer are fed to pumps ,valves or switches via the interface. They are two type of control: 1.DDC-Direct Digital Control. 2.SSC-Supervisory Set-point Control. PROCESS CONTROL:
  10. 10.  DDC; It is when the fermenter is under the direct control of the computer software.  SSC; the use of independent controller to manage all control function of a fermenter and the computer communicates with the controller only to exchange information.
  11. 11. • It is used to fermenter in the fermentation techniques. SENSOR:
  12. 12. Inductive sensors Inductors and inductance can strike fear into the hearts of normally sane engineers, but inductance is the basis for many sensing applications. Inductive sensors are used heavily in machine applications to sense the proximity of a metal object.
  13. 13.  Temperature control.  Ph control  Dissolved the oxygen.  Mineral/nutrient level Application:
