Digital age dating2

 1. 2. How has the digital age affected communication when dating?

The communication technologies that are provided today, have greatly affected dating. Modern technologies have changed the way that people communicate with one another. Staying in touch with a significant other or starting a new relationship has never been easier than it is today. Text messaging, email, social networks, and online dating allow faster and more efficient communication and can help build relationships. However, they can also have negative effects such as limiting personal contact and straining relationships.

 2. 3. Online Dating and Social Networks

Online dating and social networks have had a big impact on interpersonal communication and relationships. Millions of people nowadays are using the Internet to find a significant other. Dating websites such as Match.com and eHarmony.com have become very popular. The anonymity is what makes internet dating so popular. For some people, dating is more comfortable when you can get to know someone from the comfort of your living room

 3. 4.

If you are a shy person or not very outgoing, then meeting new people can be hard. It’s much easier to open up to a computer screen without feeling nervous the way you might in person. Plus if someone is not interested in you, there is no face-to-face embarrassment from rejection. Online dating can make communicating much easier, faster, and less awkward. Online dating also gives you the opportunity to talk to a wide variety of people. You probably will never have the opportunity to interact in person with these kinds of people. Now even though online dating has some positive effects on communication when dating, it also comes with a few drawbacks.

 4. 5.

A person can be misinterpreted due to lack of facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice. People don’t often communicate online as they would in person. Communicating online may cause you to forget that words do indeed mean something, and the recipient of those words is a human being, not the "Send" button.

 5. 6.

Dating online can make it much easier for people to lie about who they really are. When meeting someone in person you automatically know if they are a 6-foot-2, blonde hair, blue eyed model. It’s also hard to determine if someone is a good match if you have only spoken to them online. You also lack the chemistry and intimacy you may feel during face-to-face communication. When speaking to someone online you may feel that you have a sense of who they are but when you meet them in person you find out that you were way off.

 6. 7. Texting and Relationships

Texting has become a very popular form of communication. It is a convenient way to communicate with another person at anytime. Although convenient, texting can lead to many misunderstandings, therefore causing an argument or fight in a relationship. While texting, you are unable to look at the other person; you can’t see their body language, facial expressions, or hear the tone in their voice as they speak. Although you can add emoticons or facial expressions such as :) or :(, it is still at times difficult to understand the other persons true emotions.

 7. 8.

Long pauses between text messages can be interpreted at an avoidance. Conflicting schedules could be the cause of a long pause, but the person could misread it as avoiding. Texting can impact a relationship positively or negatively, how it impacts the relationship depends on the individuals involved.

 8. 9. Pros of Texting

Convenient way of communicating, especially when schedules conflict

Easy way to reach out to someone you have just met

Fast, easy, and to the point

Let someone know you are thinking of them; a lighthearted text

Receiving a kind message during a crazy and busy day, can put a smile on ones face.

Quick way to ask a simple question and receive a simple answer.
