2. influences
• We looked at other disaster films for teenage boys and took
inspiration from them. These included: The impossible, 127 hours and
2012 which all have similar themes. However, we chose the theme of
skiing, as we wanted to make this film more realistic for our audience
which would make the plot line seem more real so the audience could
empathise with the characters who were trapped.
3. Characters
• Joshua(Josh) Williams- Played by Dylan O’brien
18 years old, white male,
middle-class, student, athletic,

student, jealous of Josh because he’s more

Josh’s girlfriend, Rachel.

Mason since they were young.
8. Plot
• A group of friends go on a skiing holiday in Austria.
• Avalanche happens and all friends (apart form Jacob) get trapped under
some icy rocks in the mountains where no one can find them.
• Jacob was lying under some snow and wakes up alone and does not know
where anyone is.
• He is far away from the skiing resort and must make the decision to either
look for his friends or go and get help. He tries to find his friends.
• Under the rocks the four friends have no food and Mason is arguing with
Josh.
• A helicopter finds Jacob walking in the snow and they continue to look for
the friends.
• Mason tries to move some rocks from above to try and escape. The rocks
end up falling on him and he dies but it leaves an opening so the rest of the
friends can climb through the hole.
• The helicopter finds them and takes them to the hospital to seek refuge.
9. narrative
• Equilibrium – Arriving at the mountain and having fun with friends.
• Disruption of Equilibrium – The avalanche occurs.
• Protagonists realise the equilibrium has changed – the characters are
trapped and Jacob is lost alone on the mountain.
• Restoration of Equilibrium – all characters are found by the helicopter
and are taken to the hospital.
• New Equilibrium – the characters have recovered from the trauma.
10. Opening sequence
• All character are seen exiting the plane for their holiday in Austria.
• They go to their hotel and settle in their rooms and go to sleep.
• They are seen skiing down the mountain.
• They are all having fun but we can see that Mason is secretly jealous
of Josh and Rachel. Mason comes across moody.
• Jacob leaves to get some food.
• You can hear people screaming and skiing down the mountain faster.
• The avalanche of snow is shown.

12. Camera in the opening
• Middle shots of characters as they leave the plane and go to their
rooms.
• Long shots of them skiing down the mountain and close ups of the
expressions on their faces (laughing).
• High angle view of the mountain when the avalanche occurs.
