  11. 11. These seven things thatGod hates are straight outof His Word.As we study God’s Wordeach Sunday, you will seeScripture referencesbecause if what we teach
  12. 12. was not from the Bible, and the Holy Spirit wasnot involved in theteaching, then thosewords would just be abunch of words going intoa bunch of ears and we
  13. 13. would simply be putting alot of printer’s ink onsome finely processedtrees.
  14. 14. Acts 17:11b NASB11b Now they (theBereans) received the wordwith great eagerness, examining the Scripturesdaily to see whether thesethings were so.
  15. 15. Ray Stedman’s commentson the seven things thatGod hates:Together, the books ofPsalms, Proverbs andEcclesiastes give us thecry of the soul of man.
  16. 16. 1 Thessalonians 5:23NASB23 Now may the God ofpeace Himself sanctifyyou entirely; and mayyour spirit and soul andbody be preserved
  17. 17. complete, without blameat the coming of our LordJesus Christ.1 Thessalonians 5:23NASB
  18. 18. Ecclesiastes deals with thefunction of the mind –the search of mans reasonthroughout the earth, analyzing, evaluating, weighing and concludingon the basis of what is
  19. 19. discoverable under thesun, that is, by humanreason. In Psalms you have theemotional nature of man.
  20. 20. Psalm 42:1-5 NASB1 As the deer pants for thewater brooks,So my soul pants for You,O God.2 My soul thirsts for God,for the living God;
  21. 21. When shall I come andappear before God?3 My tears have been myfood day and night,While they say to me allday long, “Where is yourGod?”
  22. 22. 4 These things I rememberand I pour out my soulwithin me.For I used to go alongwith the throng and leadthem in procession to thehouse of God,
  23. 23. With the voice of joy andthanksgiving, a multitudekeeping festival.5 Why are you in despair,O my soul? And why have youbecome disturbed withinme?
  24. 24. Hope in God, for I shallagain praise Him for thehelp of His presence.Psalm 42:1-5 NASB
  25. 25. YOUR SOULEcclesiastes – the mind isyour thinkerPsalms – the emotions areyour feelerProverbs – the will isyour decider
  26. 26. In the book of Proverbswe have the appeal to thewill of man and theconclusion of the will; thisbook is all about thethings man should decide;the choices of life.
  27. 27. PROVERBS 6:16-19NASB7 THINGS GOD HATESJ. Vernon McGeesThru The Bible
  28. 28. Proverbs 6:16-19 NASB16 There are six thingswhich the Lord hates,Yes, seven which are anabomination to Him:
  29. 29. 17 Haughty eyes, a lyingtongue, and hands thatshed innocent blood,18 A heart that deviseswicked plans,Feet that run rapidly toevil,
  30. 30. 19 A false witness whoutters lies,And one who spreadsstrife among brothers.Proverbs 6:16-19 NASB
  31. 31. It is unbelievable to somefolk that God could hate. They consider Him asonly a God of love. The reason they have thiskind of reaction is theresult of following
  32. 32. deductive reasoning. The major premise is thatGod is love. That is true. The minor premise is thatlove is the opposite ofhate, and that is also true.
  33. 33. Then the conclusion theydraw is that God cannothate anything, but that isnot true.God is love, but He alsohates evil.
  34. 34. We can see this samething in our humanrelationships.
  35. 35. You love your little girl, but you hate the fever thatis racking her body.
  36. 36. You love your son, butyou hate the mad dogwith the frothing mouththat comes into your yardand attempts to bite him.
  37. 37. If you love your child, you will hate the maddog.
  38. 38. As long as there is aworld of contrasts, afallen world in which sinhas entered, we will lovethe right and hate thewrong.
  39. 39. Or, on the other hand, ifyou love sin, then youwill hate righteousness. The Word of God tells usto love the good and hatethe evil.
  40. 40. Psalm 45:7 NASBstates that:7 God has lovedrighteousness and hatedwickedness;
  41. 41. When we get to the Bookof Ecclesiastes, we findthat it says that there is"A time to love, and atime to hate..." (Eccl. 3:8).
  42. 42. Now, in Proverbs, we findthat there are seven thingsGod hates. This is His list:“These six things doth theLord hate: yea, seven arean abomination unto Him:
  43. 43. A proud look, a lyingtongue, and hands thatshed innocent blood,An heart that devisethwicked imaginations, feetthat be swift in running tomischief, a false witness
  44. 44. that speaketh lies, and hethat soweth discordamong brethren.”Proverbs 6:16-19 KJV
  45. 45. God definitely says thatHe hates these things, andwe ought to put them onour "hate list" also.
  46. 46. This passage in Proverbsisnt the first time God hasstated that He hatessomething.
  47. 47. In Deuteronomy weread:“Neither shall youset up any image; whichthe LORD your Godhates.”Deuteronomy 16:22King James 2000 Bible
  48. 48. God hates any kind ofidol or anything thatwould take His place inour hearts.
  49. 49. God said to the earlychurch in the Book ofRevelation:“you hate the deeds ofthe Nicolaitans, which Ialso hate.”Revelation 2:6 NASB
  50. 50. God loves, but also Godhates some things.Scripture adequatelystates the case here inProverbs 6.
  51. 51. The number seven in theBible indicates notperfection butcompleteness so it issaying that God has acomplete hatred of theseseven things.
  52. 52. They are things thatreveal the total depravityand the utter degradationof the human species.God has gone on recordthat He utterly hates theseseven things.
  53. 53. God denies the thesis ofliberal theology that He issome sentimental andsenile old man who weepsbut never works, that Hesimply shuts His eyes tothe sins of mankind and is
  54. 54. tolerant of evil, that Heforgives because He hasntthe intestinal fortitude topunish sin.God says, "I love," but Healso says, "I hate."
  55. 55. The idea that we are to beeasy on the guilty iswidespread in our landbecause we dont have thecourage to go throughwith a strong program ofpunishment.
  56. 56. That school of thought iscorrupting and wreckingour society today.God is willing to punishthe guilty.God is not afraid of publicopinion.
  57. 57. God doesnt run from anyappearance of offendingmen.God is no coward.God says that by nomeans will He clear theguilty.
  58. 58. Nahum 1:3 NASB3 The Lord will by nomeans leave theguilty unpunished.
  59. 59. Exodus 34:7 NASB7  He will by no meansleave the guiltyunpunished.
  60. 60. His laws are inviolate andinexorable (unstoppable). So lets look at this uglyand hateful brood. These belong on the hateside of Gods ledger:
  61. 61. (1)Haughty eyes,(2) a lying tongue,(3) hands that shedinnocent blood,(4) A heart that deviseswicked plans,
  62. 62. (5) feet that run rapidly toevil,(6) a false witness whoutters lies,(7) and one who spreadsstrife among brothers
  63. 63. 1. “A proud look.” KJV“Haughty eyes” NASBThe literal meaning iseyes of loftiness. It is the attitude thatovervalues self andundervalues others.
  64. 64. This is pride. It is that thought of theheart, that little look andthat turn of the face, thatflash of the eye whichsays you are better thansomeone else.
  65. 65. God says, "I hate it."It is number one on Hislist -- He puts it ahead ofmurder and ahead ofdrunkenness.God hates the proud look.
  66. 66. As you know, the firstovert act of sin in Heaven, the original sIn, wasprIde.“I” disease!
  67. 67. Isaiah 14:13-14 NASB13 “But you (Lucifer) saidin your heart, ‘I willascend to heaven;I will raise my throneabove the stars of God,
  68. 68. And I will sit on themount of assemblyIn the recesses of thenorth.14 ‘I will ascend above theheights of the clouds;I will make myself like
  69. 69. the Most High.’Isaiah 14:13-14 NASB
  70. 70. Satan is the one who cameto Eve in the Garden ofEden and said,"...you willbe like God..." (Genesis3:5).
  71. 71. It is quite interesting thatbehind all psychologicaldisturbances andpsychosomatic diseasethere is the trunk of treefrom which theabnormality springs.
  72. 72. Do you know what thatis? It is a lack of being acomplete personality.Remember when westudied holiness and itmeans wholeness?
  73. 73. It is wanting to besomebody important, wanting certain statussymbols -- one of which isindependence of God.It is wanting to be onesown god.
  74. 74. It is making the little selfto be the big “I” –to be god. That is the reason asalvation by worksappeals to men.
  75. 75. Little man likes to say,"Im going to earn myown salvation.Ill do it myself, and Idont need You, God.I certainly dont need tohave Your Son die for me.
  76. 76. When I come into Yourpresence, I want You tomove over because I amjust as good as You are,and Im going to sit downright beside You."
  77. 77. A work-salvation is theresult of folk who arepsychologically sick.God resists the proud, butHe gives grace to thehumble.
  78. 78. In the beatitudes of theSermon on the Mount, theLord Jesus said,"Blessed are the poor inspirit: for theirs is thekingdom of heaven"(Matthew 5:3).
  79. 79. This is what the psalmistsays: "Lord, my heart isnot haughty, nor mineeyes lofty: neither do Iexercise myself in greatmatters, or in things toohigh for me" (Ps 131:1).
  80. 80. We need to take the lowlyplace and say,"Oh God, I am weak.I cant make it. I needYou."
  81. 81. One day J. Vernon Mageesaw a guy walk into agroup of young men.He was a large, swaggering, big baby boy;that is what he was.
  82. 82. He wanted to be acceptedby his peers; so he walkedin, looked around, andbegan to curse like asailor.Magee thought,“Poor little fellow!”
  83. 83. What a poor little baby heis, trying to make himselfacceptable with the otherfellows. Why doesnt he simply gobefore God and tell Himthe truth?
  84. 84. Psychologically manadopts all this phonystuff. How much better off hewould be to say to God asthe psalmist said,
  85. 85. "Lord, my heart is nothaughty. I dont want tomake claims that are notgenuine. I dont have anyrighteousness of myown."
  86. 86. When you go to God forHis salvation, that iswhen you become a real,full-fledged personalityand that is the person Heis looking for:
  87. 87. Isaiah 66:2b NASB2b “But to this one I willlook, to him who ishumble and contrite ofspirit, and who tremblesat My word.”
  88. 88. If you are willing to cometo God on that basis, Godwill receive you.He hates a proud look!
  89. 89. (1)Haughty eyes,(2) a lying tongue,(3) hands that shedinnocent blood,(4) A heart that deviseswicked plans,
  90. 90. (5) feet that run rapidly toevil,(6) a false witness whoutters lies,(7) and one who spreadsstrife among brothers
  91. 91. 2. God hates a "lyingtongue."Have you ever noticedthat there is far more saidthroughout the Bibleabout the abuse of thetongue than is said about
  92. 92. the abuse of alcohol? The abuse of the tongue issomething that affects alllanguages and all races.
  93. 93. 6b  “the tongue is set onfire by Hell itself” James3:6bNo wonder God put it ina puddle of water!
  94. 94. Speaking in tongues is notthe only tonguesmovement. There is a big tonguesmovement today and it isthe lying tongue. How tragic that is!
  95. 95. The psalmist proclaimed,"I said in my haste, allmen are liars" (Ps. 116:11)."Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips, and froma deceitful tongue"(Psalm 120:2).
  96. 96. In David’s contrite sinner’sprayer for pardon frommurder and adultery, hesaid inPsalm 51:66 “Behold, You desire truthin the innermost being,”
  97. 97. God is the God of truth.Jesus prayed:"Into Thine hand Icommit My spirit: Thouhast redeemed Me,O Lord God of truth."Psalm 31:5 & Luke 23:46
  98. 98. How wonderful that is.How different from thelying tongue!
  99. 99. (1)Haughty eyes,(2) a lying tongue,(3) hands that shedinnocent blood,(4) A heart that deviseswicked plans,
  100. 100. (5) feet that run rapidly toevil,(6) a false witness whoutters lies,(7) and one who spreadsstrife among brothers
  101. 101. 3. The third thing Godhates is "hands that shedinnocent blood.”A murderer is particularlyodious and objectionableboth to God and to man.
  102. 102. God says the murderershould be punishedbecause he took thatwhich God said is sacred-- the human life. The popular idea today iscompletely opposite.
  103. 103. After a man has beenkilled the murderer isbrought to trial, thensuddenly the murdererslife is considered to beprecious to our sicksociety.
  104. 104. God says that human lifeis precious and that whena murderer kills a man, heis to forfeit his own life. That is the teaching of theWord of God.
  105. 105. (1)Haughty eyes,(2) a lying tongue,(3) hands that shedinnocent blood,(4) A heart that deviseswicked plans,
  106. 106. (5) feet that run rapidly toevil,(6) a false witness whoutters lies,(7) and one who spreadsstrife among brothers
  107. 107. 4. The fourth thing Godhates is "an heart thatdeviseth wickedimaginations“ KJV“a heart that deviseswicked plans” NASB --thoughts of iniquity.
  108. 108. All of mankind has evilthoughts.
  109. 109. Jeremiah 17:9 NASB9 “The heart is moredeceitful than all else andis desperately sick;Who can understand it?”
  110. 110. The Lord Jesus said,"For out of the heartproceed evil thoughts,murders, adulteries,fornications, thefts, falsewitness, blasphemies"(Matthew 15:19).
  111. 111. It is an ugly brood thatcomes out of the humanheart.By the way, have you everconfessed to God whatyou have in your mindand in your heart?
  112. 112. We all need to do that.We need to be cleansed.
  113. 113. Psalm 51:10 NASB10  Create in me a cleanheart, O God, and renewa steadfast spirit withinme.
  114. 114. God is dealing with theanatomy of evil andiniquity.
  115. 115. It includes the haughtyeyes, the lying tongues, the hands that shedinnocent blood, thedeceitful heart, and thefeet, as we shall see next.
  116. 116. (1)Haughty eyes,(2) a lying tongue,(3) hands that shedinnocent blood,(4) A heart that deviseswicked plans,
  117. 117. (5) feet that run rapidly toevil,(6) a false witness whoutters lies,(7) and one who spreadsstrife among brothers
  118. 118. 5. "Feet that be swift inrunning to mischief “ KJV“Feet that run rapidly toevil” NASBThe heart blazes the trailthat the feet will follow.Isaiah put it like this:
  119. 119. "Their feet run to evil, andthey make haste to shedinnocent blood: theirthoughts are thoughts ofiniquity; wasting anddestruction are in theirpaths" (Isaiah 59:7).
  120. 120. These are the things onGods hate list.
  121. 121. (1)Haughty eyes,(2) a lying tongue,(3) hands that shedinnocent blood,(4) A heart that deviseswicked plans,
  122. 122. (5) feet that run rapidly toevil,(6) a false witness whoutters lies,(7) and one who spreadsstrife among brothers
  123. 123. 6. “A false witness thatspeaketh lies” KJV“A false witness whoutters lies” NASBIt is not an uncommonthing today for people toperjure themselves.
  124. 124. It seems to be one of thecommon sins of our time.It is also a thing whichGod hates.
  125. 125. (1)Haughty eyes,(2) a lying tongue,(3) hands that shedinnocent blood,(4) A heart that deviseswicked plans,
  126. 126. (5) feet that run rapidly toevil,(6) a false witness whoutters lies,(7) and one who spreadsstrife among brothers
  127. 127. 7. "He that soweth discordamong brethren" KJV“One who spreads strifeamong brothers” NASBThere is a beatitude, givenby our Lord, that looks atit from the positive side:
  128. 128. "Blessed are thepeacemakers: for theyshall be called thechildren of God"(Matthew 5:9).
  129. 129. There are multitudes offolk sowing discord, andthey are not all politicallymotivated.
  130. 130. They are in yourneighborhood, andchances are they are inyour church. You may even have one inyour home, and there is apossibility that he even
  131. 131. may be sitting where yousit right now!Causing trouble betweenfamily members orbrothers in Christ orfellow workers issomething that God hates.
  132. 132. This list of seven sins islike a mirror. We look into it, and wesquirm because we seeourselves.
  133. 133. Take a good look atyourself in this mirror ofthe Word of God.
  134. 134. 7 THINGS GOD HATES:(1)Haughty eyes,(2) a lying tongue,(3) hands that shedinnocent blood,(4) a heart that deviseswicked plans,
  135. 135. (5) feet that run rapidly toevil,(6) a false witness whoutters lies,(7) and one who spreadsstrife among brothers
  136. 136. After you and I seeourselves as we really are,let us go to God and makea confession of thesethings.
  137. 137. Let us be honest with Himand ask Him for Hiscleansing.
  138. 138. What is the number onething? The glory of God!
  139. 139. My son, keep thy fatherscommandment, andforsake not the law of thymother:Bind them continuallyupon thine heart, and tiethem about thy neck.
  140. 140. When thou goest, it shalllead thee; when thousleepest, it shall keep thee;and when thou awakest, itshall talk with thee[Prov. 6:20-22].
  141. 141. The young man hasgrown and has gone awayto school, but he isreminded not to forget thethings that were taughthim by his father and hismother.
  142. 142. The things He has learnedin the home are veryimportant. He is to keep themconstantly before him.
  143. 143. For the commandment isa lamp; and the law islight; and reproofs ofinstruction are the way oflife [Prov. 6:23].—J. Vernon McGees ThruThe Bible
  144. 144. Proverbs Chapter 6This chapter covers manydifferent subjects. It starts with some advicethat is good for thebusiness world today, forChristians or
  145. 145. non-Christians.These are simply somegood business principles. You see, God has given alot of good advice for allmankind, the saved aswell as the unsaved.
  146. 146. —J. Vernon McGees ThruThe Bible
  147. 147. Proverbs 6 NASBParental Counsel1 My son, if you havebecome surety for yourneighbor,Have given a pledge for astranger,
  148. 148. 2 If you have been snaredwith the words of yourmouth,Have been caught withthe words of your mouth,
  149. 149. 3 Do this then, my son,and deliver yourself;Since you have come intothe hand of yourneighbor,Go, humble yourself, andimportune your neighbor.
  150. 150. 4 Give no sleep to youreyes,Nor slumber to youreyelids;
  151. 151. 5 Deliver yourself like agazelle from the hunter’shandAnd like a bird from thehand of the fowler.
  152. 152. 6 Go to the ant,O sluggard,Observe her ways and bewise,7 Which, having no chief,Officer or ruler,
  153. 153. 8 Prepares her food in thesummerAnd gathers her provisionin the harvest.
  154. 154. 9 How long will you liedown, O sluggard? When will you arise fromyour sleep?
  155. 155. 10 “A little sleep, a littleslumber,A little folding of thehands to rest”—
  156. 156. 11 Your poverty will comein like a vagabondAnd your need like anarmed man.
  157. 157. 12 A worthless person, awicked man,Is the one who walks witha perverse mouth,
  158. 158. 13 Who winks with hiseyes, who signals with hisfeet,Who points with hisfingers;
  159. 159. 14 Who with perversity inhis heartcontinually devises evil,Who spreads strife.
  160. 160. 15 Therefore his calamitywill come suddenly;Instantly he will bebroken and there willbe no healing.
  161. 161. Good Business Principles(6:1-11)My son, if thou be suretyfor thy friend, if thou haststricken thy hand with astranger,
  162. 162. Thou art snared with thewords of thy mouth, thouart taken with the wordsof thy mouth [Prov. 6:1-2].
  163. 163. He mentions two thingswhich are good adviceany time.Beware of signing afriends note. And never become apartner with a stranger.
  164. 164. The unsaved man canfollow this advice in hisbusiness, and it will behelpful to him.The second verse wouldindicate that the fellowhas been boasting.
  165. 165. Apparently one of thereasons a man will co-signa note with another manis that he wants to be thebig shot.
  166. 166. He wants to appearoutstanding in thefinancial realm. We are to beware of that.
  167. 167. Do this now, my son, anddeliver thyself, when thouart come into the hand ofthy friend; go, humblethyself, and make sure thyfriend [Prov. 6:3].
  168. 168. Dont be afraid to go tohim and get thingsstraightened out.Be sure that you hold onto your friends, and besure that you beware ofyour enemies.
  169. 169. That is exactly what he issaying here and willrepeat it in other places.Give not sleep to thineeyes, nor slumber to thineeyelids.
  170. 170. Deliver thyself as a roefrom the hand of thehunter, and as a bird fromthe hand of the fowler[Prov. 6:4-5].
  171. 171. Dont sleep on it; get thething straightened out.You are just like a birdcaught in a trap if youhave signed a note. That is the warning.
  172. 172. Now he will present thepositive side. Not only should one beprudent in what he doesin his business andprudent in what he saysin the business world, but
  173. 173. he is also to learnsomething from the ants.Go to the ant, thousluggard; consider herways, and be wise:Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,
  174. 174. provideth her meat in thesummer, and gatherethher food in the harvest[Prov. 6:6-8].The little ant is quite ateacher.
  175. 175. Aunt Ant can reveal greattruths to us.One truth is that she is asdiligent in business asanyone possibly can be.
  176. 176. This is something that thechild of God can learnfrom the little ant.
  177. 177. The ant is busy doingwhat is the mostimportant thing in her life-- she is getting food forthe winter, caring for thefuture, and she is busyabout it.
  178. 178. I think one of the greatsins among Christianstoday is laziness, andmany of the lazy ones canbe found in full-timeChristian service.
  179. 179. All of us need to askourselves what we dowith our spare time.Do we read the Word ofGod?Do we study the Word ofGod?
  180. 180. I think that laziness is oneof the curses of theministry today.A young man came to meand said, "I feel like Imthrough as a preacher.
  181. 181. Ive been a pastor here atthis place for three years, and I have run out ofsermons.I feel like a dried-up well."
  182. 182. Of course, then he becamevery pious,"Ive spent a lotof time in prayer andmeditation."Well, I asked him, "Howmuch time do you spendin the Word of God?
  183. 183. How much time do youspend studying it?"I couldnt get a verydefinite answer from him,but he inferred that hespent less than an hour aweek in the study of the
  184. 184. Bible! He was a great promoter, always out doingsomething while theimportant businessremained undone.
  185. 185. I told him,"Unless youchange your ways, youought to get out of theministry. It is a disgrace to go to thepulpit on a Sundaymorning unprepared.
  186. 186. You should havesomething to say from theWord of God."The ant has a lesson forthat boy.
  187. 187. "Go to the ant, thousluggard; consider herways, and be wise."How long wilt thou sleep,O sluggard? when wiltthou arise out of thysleep?
  188. 188. Yet a little sleep, a littleslumber, a little folding ofthe hands to sleep:So shall thy poverty comeas one that travelleth, andthy want as an armedman [Prov. 6:9-11].
  189. 189. —J. Vernon McGees ThruThe Bible
  190. 190. The Wicked Man(Proverbs 6:12-15)We come now to adescription of a wickedman, a son of Belial.
  191. 191. A naughty person, awicked man, walkethwith a froward mouth. He winketh with his eyes,he speaketh with his feet,he teacheth with hisfingers [Prov. 6:12-13].
  192. 192. Have you ever noticedthis in a person?Everything he does andevery gesture he makes issuggestive.Everything he says has afilthy connotation.
  193. 193. There are Christians whoare borderline cases in thisrespect.I knew a preacher likethat, and I got away fromhim years ago.
  194. 194. I have known somelaymen who are the sameway.Everything they said hada double meaning.
  195. 195. I know of a so-calledChristian group of folkwho, at their meetings, tell jokes with a doublemeaning. There is always that littlesuggestive thing in them.
  196. 196. This is something thatGod is speaking against.Frowardness is in hisheart, he devisethmischief continually; hesoweth discord.
  197. 197. Therefore shall hiscalamity come suddenly;suddenly shall he bebroken without remedy[Prov. 6:14-15].
  198. 198. "Frowardness" isperverseness.Notice that he "soweth" orcasts forth discord.
