  13. 13. He brought me up from adesolate pit,out of the muddy clay, and set my feet on a rock, making my steps secure.”  Psalm 40:1-2 HCSB
  14. 14. FEBRUARY VERSE “God, create a clean heartfor me and renew asteadfast spirit withinme.”  Psalm 51:10 HCSB
  15. 15. HAGGAIA MESSAGE OF HOPE!
  16. 16. Romans 5:1-5 NIV 19841“Therefore, since we havebeen justified throughfaith, we have peace withGod through our LordJesus Christ,
  17. 17. 2 through Whom we havegained access by faith intothis grace in which wenow stand. And werejoice in the hope of theglory of God.
  18. 18. 3 Not only so, but we alsorejoice in our sufferings, because we know thatsuffering producesperseverance; 4 perseverance, character;and character, hope.
  19. 19. 5 And hope does notdisappoint us, becauseGod has poured out Hislove into our hearts by theHoly Spirit, Whom He hasgiven us.” Romans 5:1-5 NIV 1984
  20. 20. All the prophets, bothmajor prophets and minorprophets, testify aboutJesus! (including Haggai)*Jesus is on every page ofthe Old Testament.
  21. 21. Acts 10:43 NIV 198443 “All the prophets testifyabout Him that everyonewho believes in Himreceives forgiveness of sinsthrough His name.”
  22. 22. As many of the prophets(Habakkuk) hadprophesied, God raisedup the Babylonian nationto come sweeping downacross the land of Israel.
  23. 23. Jerusalem was captured, the king was takencaptive, his eyes were putout, he was carried as acaptive to Babylon andthere, just as the prophecyof Jeremiah had foretold,
  24. 24. the people stayed inbondage exactly 70 years.
  25. 25. *This is one of thoseremarkable prophecieswhich have already beenfulfilled, so you can seehow God speaks throughthe prophets of things thatno man could speak on
  26. 26. his own.
  27. 27. After the 70 years werefulfilled, Daniel, whoprophesied in Babylon, tells us that God began tomove to bring the peopleback to the land.
  28. 28. They came first underZerubbabel, the captain ofthe remnant who ismentioned in the openingverse of this prophecy ofHaggai.
  29. 29. *When they came toJerusalem, they found thecity in ruins.*The walls were brokendown and the temple wasutterly destroyed.
  30. 30. They began work first ofall on the temple.
  31. 31. Although they were stillunder the domain andrule of the Babylonians, they had permission fromthe king of Babylon tobegin work on thistemple.
  32. 32. They started working, andthey managed to lay thefoundations and perhapsjust one row of stones---amuch smaller temple thanthe original one thatSolomon had built.
  33. 33. Then the work began tolag, and after a while itceased altogether and for15 years nothing wasdone on the temple.
  34. 34. It is at this point thatHaggai the prophet risesup to speak.
  35. 35. Haggai delivers fourmessages to thesepeople---all within thespace of about a year anda half, all concerning thebuilding of the temple.
  36. 36. But the deeper message,as we have alreadysuggested, applies to us,the temple/ the greathouse of God that He hasbeen building for 20centuries now.
  37. 37. We will read thisprophecy not only as amessage of the prophet tothe people of his dayabout building thetemple, but also as amessage to the people of
  38. 38. God everywhere (us)concerning their (our)responsibility in buildingthe great house of God,the temple that the HolySpirit has been buildingout of human hearts.
  39. 39. In this prophecy there arefour messages andeach one reveals anexcuse given by thepeople for not working onthe temple --- both theirexcuse and the real reason
  40. 40. behind that excuse.*The first messageincludes all of chapter 1and in verses 2-4 we read:
  41. 41. Haggai 1:2-4Holman Christian Standard Bible 2 “The Lord of Hosts saysthis: These people say:The time has not come forthe house of the Lord to
  42. 42. be rebuilt.”3 The word of the LORDcame through Haggai theprophet: 4 “Is it a time for youyourselves to live in yourpaneled houses, while this
  43. 43. house lies in ruins?” Haggai 1:2-4
  44. 44. *The theme of theprophecy of Haggai is"get busy and build theLords house.“*Don’t quit!
  45. 45. *The church building isnot the house of God.
  46. 46. In Haggais day thetemple was a picture orshadow of thetrue houseof God.
  47. 47. Revelation 15:55 “After this I looked, andthe heavenly sanctuary—the tabernacle oftestimony—was opened.”
  48. 48. Colossians 2:1717 “These are a shadow ofwhat was to come; thesubstance is the Messiah.”
  49. 49. These shadows pointedtoward the true house ofGod which is the believer, and collectively, allbelievers --- forming thegreat house of God whichis the church, the place
  50. 50. where God dwells.*That is what God isinterested in building.
  51. 51. In verse 2 the prophetrepeats the excuse that thepeople gave for leavingthe temple abandoned for15 years.
  52. 52. *They were saying "Why,the time has not yet come.Theres no use doinganything now becauseGod is not ready yet.”*But read the answer Godgives to their excuse ---
  53. 53. 3 “The word of the LORD  came through Haggai theprophet: 4 “Is it a time for youyourselves to live in yourpaneled houses, while thishouse lies in ruins?” 1:3-4
  54. 54. In other words, God says,"Is the problem really thatyou think its not yet timefor Me to work? Well, itsamazing that you think itis time for Me to work inhelping you to build your
  55. 55. house. How about Mine?"*And He rather ironicallysuggests that the realreason the work of Godhas lagged is that they areall wrapped up in theirown affairs.
  56. 56. *They have put Godswork second and theirown needs first.*The fact that they werethere in the land at allproves that Gods timehad come.
  57. 57. *They would not havebeen back there if those 70years had not beenfulfilled.*The real reason, therefore, was that they were notwilling to put God first.
  58. 58. Their own comforts, andtheir own convenienceand their own desirescame first.
  59. 59. In verses 5 and 7 God saysto them, (in the NASB)“Consider your ways!”“Think carefully aboutyour ways!” HCSB
  60. 60. Haggai 1:7-117  “The Lord of Hosts saysthis:‘Think carefully aboutyour ways.
  61. 61. 8 Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, andbuild the house. Then Iwill be pleased with it andbe glorified,” saysthe Lord.
  62. 62. 9 “You expected much, but then it amounted tolittle. When you broughtthe harvest to your house,I ruined it.Why?’
  63. 63. This is the declaration ofthe Lord of Hosts.‘Because My house stilllies in ruins, while each ofyou is busy with his ownhouse.
  64. 64. 10 So on your account, theskies have withheld thedew and the land itscrops.11 I have summoned adrought on the fields andthe hills, on the grain,
  65. 65. new wine, olive oil,and whatever the groundyields, on man and beast, and on all that your handsproduce.’” Haggai 1:7-11
  66. 66. *God says,"I am behind this."*Why did He do this?*Why did He short-circuitall their efforts to achieveprosperity on their own?
  67. 67. *Was it because He wastrying to punish them?*No, God never punishesin that sense.*He was trying to wakethem up.
  68. 68. He was trying to showthem that there was aninfallible rule that runs allthrough Scripture and allthrough life, that men areconstantly trying toreverse, that says,
  69. 69. 33 “But seek first thekingdom of God and Hisrighteousness, and allthese things will beprovided for you.” Matthew 6:33
  70. 70. The Cure for AnxietyMatthew 6:25-3425 “This is why I tellyou: Don’t worry aboutyour life, what you will eator what you will drink; orabout your body,
  71. 71. what you will wear.Isn’t life more than foodand the body more thanclothing? 26 Look at the birds of thesky: They don’t sow orreap or gather into barns,
  72. 72. yet your heavenly Fatherfeeds them. Aren’t youworth more than they?
  73. 73.  27 Can any of you add asingle cubit to his heightby worrying? 28 And why do you worryabout clothes? Learn howthe wildflowers of the fieldgrow: they don’t
  74. 74. labor or spin thread. 29 Yet I tell you that noteven Solomon in all hissplendor was adornedlike one of these!
  75. 75. 30 If that’s how Godclothes the grass of thefield, which is here todayand thrown into thefurnace tomorrow, won’tHe do much more for you—you of little faith?
  76. 76. 31 So don’t worry, saying,‘What will we eat?’ or‘What will we drink?’ or‘What will we wear?’32 For the idolaters eagerlyseek all these things, andyour heavenly Father
  77. 77. knows that you needthem. 33 But seek first thekingdom of God and Hisrighteousness, and allthese things will beprovided for you.
  78. 78. 34 Therefore don’t worryabout tomorrow, becausetomorrow will worryabout itself. Each day hasenough trouble of itsown.” Matthew 6:25-34
  79. 79. Matthew 10:29-3029 “Aren’t two sparrowssold for a penny? Yet notone of them falls to theground without yourFather’s consent.
  80. 80. 30 But even the hairs ofyour head have all beencounted. 31 So don’t beafraid therefore; you areworth more than manysparrows.” Matthew 10:29-30
  81. 81. *Why should I feeldiscouraged,*Why should the shadowscome,*Why should my heart belonely, andlong for heav’n and home,
  82. 82. *When Jesus is myportion?*My constant Friend isHe:*His eye is on thesparrow, and I know Hewatches me;
  83. 83. His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watchesme.
  84. 84. Refrain:I sing because I’m happy,I sing because I’m free,For His eye is on thesparrow, and I know Hewatches me.
  85. 85. His Eye Is on theSparrow - a Gospel hymnthat although today it is astaple of African-American worship,the song was originallywritten in 1905 by two
  86. 86. Anglo - Americansongwriters, lyricistCivilla D. Martin andcomposer Charles H.Gabriel.
  87. 87. Civilla CharlesMartin Gabriel(Words) (Music)
  88. 88. Civilla Martin, who wrotethe lyrics, said:“Early in the spring of1905, my husband and Iwere sojourning inElmira, New York.
  89. 89. We contracted a deepfriendship for a couple bythe name of Mr. and Mrs.Doolittle—true saints ofGod.
  90. 90. Mrs. Doolittle had beenbedridden for nigh twentyyears. Her husband wasan incurable cripple whohad to propel himself toand from his business in awheel chair.
  91. 91. Despite their afflictions, they lived happyChristian lives, bringinginspiration and comfort toall who knew them. One day while we werevisiting with the
  92. 92. Doolittles, my husbandcommented on theirbright hopefulness andasked them for the secretof it.Mrs. Doolittles reply wassimple:
  93. 93. "His eye is on thesparrow, and I know Hewatches me."The beauty of this simpleexpression of boundlessfaith gripped the heartsand fired the imagination
  94. 94. of Dr. Martin and me.The hymn His Eye Is onthe Sparrow was theoutcome of thatexperience.” —Civilla Martin
  95. 95. The song is mostassociated with actress-singer Ethel Waters whoused the title for herautobiography.
  96. 96. Matthew 6:26-2726 “Look at the birds ofthe sky: They don’t sow orreap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Fatherfeeds them. Aren’t youworth more than they?
  97. 97. 27 Can any of you add asingle cubit to hisheight by worrying?” Matthew 6:26-27
  98. 98. The way to have what youneed in terms of physicalfood and material shelterand the necessities of lifeis to give your majorconcern and interests (notto these things),
  99. 99. but to advancing Godswork.*That is what we are herefor, to advance Hiskingdom!
  100. 100. We have a Father inHeaven Who knows ourneeds along this line, andHe is perfectly able tosupply them, and He willas long as our interest isfirst of all in His work.
  101. 101. Philippians 4:1919 “And my God willsupply all your needsaccording to His riches inglory in Christ Jesus.”
  102. 102. That is calling us back tothis great principle thatthe NT is reminding us ofthat we are not our own,but we were bought witha price; we belong toHim.
  103. 103. *We are here to advanceHis cause, His interests.*We are here to build thehouse of God.
  104. 104. That is why God has leftus here in this world, sothat we might be Hisinstruments in this workof erecting a great templeof human beings whichwill be and is a habitation
  105. 105. of God, the dwelling placeof God.*Is He first in ourinterests?*Is that Who we live for?
  106. 106. Or is it that we want alarger TV set or a snazzyautomobile or a morebeautiful home or betterdrapes or an extravagantrug?
  107. 107. God has called usprimarily to put thebuilding of the house ofGod first---not the brickand mortar building, butthe church of God.
  108. 108. *There are people allaround us that the HolySpirit intends to add tothe house of God.*We are to be Hisinstruments and thechannels of His working.
  109. 109. The great question thatHaggai confronts us withis: how can we find timeto advance our interestsso eagerly, so carefully, sothoughtfully---spendingso much time thinking
  110. 110. about advancing our ownmaterial gain and thenexcuse ourselves from thework of building thehouse of God by saying,"It isnt time yet!"?
  111. 111. Do you remember thestory of William Carey, the father of modernmissions, who in 18thcentury England gotconcerned about India, faracross the sea, and prayed
  112. 112. that God would somehowreach those poor heathenwho had never heard theGospel of Jesus Christ.
  113. 113. He tried to stir up interestin the churches ofEngland, but he meteverywhere with adamantresistance to his idea.
  114. 114. *In one meeting, Careymade an impassionedplea to be sent out as amissionary.*Even though he was anuneducated cobbler, hewas willing to go.
  115. 115. One of the elders of themeeting pointed his fingerat Carey and said, "Youngman, sit down. When Godwants to evangelize theheathen, Hell do itwithout your help."
  116. 116. This was the kind ofstubborn resistance thatCarry met with, but hewas a man who wouldnot be defeated.
  117. 117. William Carey was usedof God to begin the greatmodern missionarymovement that has notstopped yet, because hewas concerned aboutGods work.
  118. 118. There is an excitement thatcomes into our lives whenwe really, genuinely putthe affairs of God first, anddo not even bother tothink about the provisionof our own needs.
  119. 119. This is why God says,“Look, now is theacceptable time; now isthe day of salvation.” 2 Corinthians 6:2b
  120. 120. So we read that theystarted this work in verses12-15:The People’s Response12 “…then the entireremnant of the peopleobeyed the voice of the
  121. 121. Lord their God and thewords of the prophetHaggai, becausethe Lord their God hadsent him.So the people fearedthe Lord.
  122. 122. 13 Haggai, the Lord’smessenger, deliveredthe Lord’s message to thepeople, “I am with you”—this is the Lord’sdeclaration.
  123. 123. 14 The Lord stirred up thespirit of Zerubbabel son ofShealtiel, governor ofJudah, the spirit of thehigh priest Joshua son ofJehozadak, and the spiritof all the remnant of the
  124. 124. people. They began workon the house of Yahwehof Hosts, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourthday of the sixth month, inthe second year of KingDarius.” Haggai 1:12-15
  125. 125. *How long did the worklast?*For only three weeks!*And then it ground to ahalt again.*So Haggai says inchapter 2, verse 3:
  126. 126. 3   “Who is left among youwho saw this house in itsformer glory? How does it look to younow?Doesn’t it seem likenothing to you?”
  127. 127. *Now God was repeatingthrough Haggai what thepeople were saying.*They had gotten startedand the temple had begunto go up.
  128. 128. There was a bustle ofexcitement until an oldman came down to watchthe work.
  129. 129. He had been a child whenthey were carried captiveinto Babylon and had seenthe temple of Solomon inall its great glory, and asold men sometimes do, hewas living in the past.
  130. 130. And he said, "Do you callthis a temple? This heap of ruins here?I saw Solomons temple, and what you arebuilding here is nothingcompared to that.
  131. 131. All the gold and silverthat was in that temple---it was amazing! And you dont even haveany gold or silver. How are you going todecorate this temple?"
  132. 132. The people gotdiscouraged and theysaid, "You know, hesright. We dont have anygold or silver. We donthave anything to makethis temple beautiful.
  133. 133. Whats the use?Why work?"*So they quit.*But the Lord said (2:4):
  134. 134. 4 “Even so, be strong,Zerubbabel”—this isthe Lord’sdeclaration. “Be strong,Joshua son of Jehozadak, high priest. Be strong, allyou people of the land”—
  135. 135. this is the Lord’sdeclaration.‘Work! For I am withyou’—the declaration ofthe Lord of Hosts.” Haggai 2:4
  136. 136. *That is always Godsanswer."Work, for I am with you.Dont worry about the factthat things dont look asgood as they ought to."*Then in verses 5 and 6:
  137. 137. 5 “This is the promise Imade to you when youcame out of Egypt, andMy Spirit is presentamong you; don’t beafraid.”
  138. 138. 6 For the Lord of Hostssays this:“Once more, in a littlewhile, I am going to shakethe heavens and theearth, the sea and the dryland.” Haggai 2:5-6
  139. 139. When God says He willshake the heavens and thepeople and the earth, Hemeans that He is going torearrange the wholehistorical picture (verses 7and 8):
  140. 140. 7 I will shake all thenations so that thetreasures of all the nationswill come, and I will fillthis house withglory,” says the Lord ofHosts.
  141. 141. 8 “The silver and goldbelong to Me”—this is thedeclaration of the Lord ofHosts.” Haggai 2:7-8
  142. 142. “God shook the worldwith a Babe, not with abomb.” Vance Havner
  143. 143. God said, "You dont needto worry about gold. Ivegot all we need of that. And if I wanted thishouse decorated withgold and silver, I couldstack it up in piles here on
  144. 144. your back step. But that isnt the kind ofglory I have in mind.I am going to fill thishouse, so that (in verse 9):9 “The final glory of thishouse will be greater than
  145. 145. the first,” says the Lord ofHosts. ‘I will providepeace in this place’—this is the declaration ofthe Lord of Hosts.” Haggai 2:9
  146. 146. *God is like that.*He says, "Look, you arediscouraged because youthink what you are doingwont amount toanything. But dont stopthe work because of that.
  147. 147. I have a different plan inmind. This house, little as it is,unpretentious as it is,without gold or silver, isactually going to havegreater glory in it than the
  148. 148. glory of the previoustemple.“*And His words werefulfilled (as always).
  149. 149. *You know how?*Into that house one daycame One Who found itfilled with moneychangers, andoverthrowing the tables,He drove them out and
  150. 150. said, "You make MyFathers house a den ofrobbers." (Matthew 21:13)*So He cleansed it andmade it a house of prayer.
  151. 151. Jesus filled God’s housewith the glory of Histeaching, standing in themidst of it and sayingthings such as people hadnever heard before.
  152. 152. He utterly changed thewhole life of that nationand every nation in theworld by what He said.
  153. 153. From out of that housethere went forth a glorythat has never ceased,a different kind of glory.
  154. 154. *Do not stop the workbecause it does notcompare with somethingthat was there in the past.*That is one of theproblems of Gods people.
  155. 155. *We are always lookingback to the past.*We say, "Oh, for the daysof Dr. Pollard. Oh, for thedays of what First Baptistused to be."
  156. 156. *And we are wistful andlong to have it that way.*But the great lesson thatGod wants to impressupon us is that Godalways does a new anddifferent work.
  157. 157. *The thing that is comingin the future is alwaysbetter for our presentsituation than the past.*We do not need to hangon to these things oftradition.
  158. 158. God is saying, "Keep onworking, I am with you!And when I am in yourmidst you dont need toworry about how it isgoing to turn out.
  159. 159. It may be different but itwill always be better."*Well, that took effect forawhile, and then what?*They quit again.*In verses 15-18 we read:
  160. 160. 15 “Now, reflect back fromthis day: Before one stonewas placed on another inthe Lord’s temple, 16 what state were you in?When someone came to agrain heap of 20 measures,
  161. 161. it only amounted to 10;when one came to thewinepress to dip 50measures from the vat, itonly amounted to 20.
  162. 162. 17 I struck you—all thework of your hands—with blight, mildew, andhail, but you didn’t turnto Me”—this is the Lord’sdeclaration.
  163. 163. 18 “Consider carefullyfrom this day forward;from the twenty-fourthday of the ninth month,from the day thefoundation of the Lord’stemple was laid;
  164. 164. consider it carefully.” Haggai 2:15-18
  165. 165. *What does he mean?*If you read between thelines, you can see againwhat the people weresaying.
  166. 166. They were saying,"Look, weve beenworking on the temple fortwo months. You said thatthe reason we werehaving such a hard timematerially and physically
  167. 167. was that we werentworking on the temple. We have been working onthe temple now for twomonths, 21 days, and weare still having a hardtime. What is the matter?
  168. 168. Why work? Nothing ishappening. It doesntwork."*They were the same kindof people we are.
  169. 169. *They wanted instantresults:"I straightened everythingout yesterday. Todayeverything ought to gogreat."
  170. 170. *What Haggai said tothese people was:“Do you think the deeppollution of sin that hasbeen going on for years isgoing to be curedovernight?”
  171. 171. Do you think that all thesehabits of wrong thinkingthat have been deeplyingrained in your mindare suddenly going to beeliminated simplybecause you begin to
  172. 172. operate on the right basis?*No, we need patience.9 “So we must not gettired of doing good, for wewill reap at the proper timeif we don’t give up.” Galatians 6:9
  173. 173. Not everything has a quick fix!
  174. 174. Now notice this word ofencouragement (verse 19):19 “Is there still seed leftin the granary? The vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive tree havenot yet produced.
  175. 175. But from this day on I willbless you.” Haggai 2:19
  176. 176. Do not worry. Keep on.Do not stop work justbecause you do not seeinstant results. If you aredoing the right thing, keep on doing it and theresults will come.
  177. 177. Once again, on the verysame day, they needed alittle encouragement andso another message came, the last one (verses 20-23):20 “The word of the LORDcame to Haggai a second
  178. 178. time on the twenty-fourthday of the month: 21 “Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah: I amgoing to shake theheavens and the earth.
  179. 179. 22 I will overturn royalthrones and destroy thepower of the Gentilekingdoms. I will overturnchariots and their riders.Horses and their riderswill fall, each by his
  180. 180. brother’s sword. 23 On that day”—this isthe declaration ofthe Lord of Hosts—“I willtake you, Zerubbabel sonof Shealtiel, My servant”—this is the Lord’s
  181. 181. declaration—“and makeyou like My signetring, for I have chosenyou.” This is thedeclaration of the Lord ofHosts.” Haggai 2:20-23
  182. 182. Now here was a specialword of encouragement tothe leader while thepeople were yet under theauthority of Babylon, although they were backin the land and building
  183. 183. the temple again, theywere still beset by manyproblems.*Everywhere they lookedthere was the sign of theauthority of the foreignpower.
  184. 184. They saw chariotseverywhere and soldiersmarching through thestreets and all the signs ofbondage, and their heartsgrew fearful and theysaid,
  185. 185. "When will it ever be? Arewe ever going to be free?"God says, "Dont worry. Ihave a program that willreverse the whole order ofthings. I will destroy thepower of this kingdom.
  186. 186. I will bring their chariotsto naught.*I will break you loosefrom the bondage of thispeople and I am going totake Zerubbabel, the manwho stands as the leader
  187. 187. of the people and makehim a signet ring."
  188. 188. *Now Zerubbabel was ofthe royal line, the line ofDavid, and these wordswere spoken of hisdescendent Who wasJesus of Nazareth.
  189. 189. *In Jesus, God fulfilled allthese words.*He took the Son of David& made Him a signet ringby which all the nationsshall ultimately be ruled.
  190. 190. A signet ring was a ringwith a seal set into it,typically for leaving animpression in sealingwax.
  191. 191. The wearing of signetrings (from Latin"signum" meaning sign)goes back to ancientEgypt; the distinctivepersonal signature wasnot developed in
  192. 192. antiquity and mostdocuments needed a seal.*Because it is used toattest the authority of itsbearer, the signet ring hasalso been seen as a symbolof power.
