3. Gene
• A gene is the basic physical &functional unit of heredity.
• Gene’s are made up of DNA.
4. History of Gene
• Danish Botanist WILHELM JOHANNSEN coined the word
gene in 1909.
• WILLIAM BATESON in 1905 coined the term GENETICS from
the word gene
5. Structure of Gene
• Genes are segments of decarboxylic acid {DNA} that contain the
code for a specific protein that functions in one or more types of
cells in the body.
• Chromosomes are structures within cells that contain a person’s
genes.
6. Parts of gene
Gene consists of three types of nucleotide sequence:-
1. Coding regions, called EXONS, which specify a sequence of
amino acids.
2. Non coding regions, called INTRONS, which do not specify
amino acids.
3. Regulatory sequences, which play a role in determining when
and where the protein is made.
9. SIMPLE GENE
• Simple gene have a coding sequence of bases in one DNA
strand .
• Upstream the coding region, the promoter is present.
• Down stream ,the termination region is present.
10. VARIABLE GENE
• Certain polypeptides are coded not by one gene but they are
coded by more than one gene present on the same or different
chromosomes .
11. TRANSPOSONE GENE
• Transposable elements [TEs] also known as “Jumping Genes” or
Transposons are sequence of DNA that move or jump from one
location in the genome to another.
