Enabling Limitless Connectivity, Opportunity and Growth with Interconnection Fabrics

  1. 1. Enabling Limitless Connectivity, Opportunity and Growth with Interconnection Fabrics! ! ! Sagi Brody, CTO! @WebairSagi! sagi@webair.com
  2. 2. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Points of Discussion • What are Interconnection Fabrics?! • Why are they cool?! • What functionality & features do I get over what exists today?! • What can I use them for?! • How do they help me optimize my business?! • How can I extend this functionality into my own environment and to customers?! • How do they help me make me money?! • Whats next?! !
  3. 3. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Who & What are Interconnection Fabrics? “ Elastic, SDN based, ubiquitous Ethernet fabric” “Interconnection Platform” ! “software enabled interconnection platform” Open Cloud Exchange! “ one-to-many Ethernet connection to the cloud” Cloud Exchange! “advanced interconnection solution”
  4. 4. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM What does that actually mean? • One physical connection from your network to the fabric! • Ability to segment multiple “Virtual Cross Connects” (VXCs) to other networks/participants! • Ability to provision VXCs instantly via portals or APIs! • Connectivity to large big name clouds and other networks! • Metro Use-case! • Longhaul transport services! • No Long term commitments! • QoS & SLA
  5. 5. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Interconnection Fabric - Connect to Public Clouds before Maintaining 4:! • Physical ports on devices! • Paid cross connects! • Organized connections with 3rd parties! • Ports to monitor and manage at fixed speeds! • MetroEthernet fees to get to other PoPs
  6. 6. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Interconnection Fabric - Connect to Public Clouds 3 less:! • Physical ports wasted! • Paid cross connects! • Organized connections with 3rd parties! • Ports to monitor and manage at fixed speeds! • No MetroEthernet fees
  7. 7. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Interconnection Fabric - Metro Cross Connects ! • One “Market” can span a very large geographical area! • See the entire region as 1 large meet-me-room! • No need to build into multiple buildings! • Free VXCs within the metro region
  8. 8. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Interconnection Fabric - Long Haul - Before
  9. 9. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Interconnection Fabric - Long Haul - After ! • One “Market” can span a very large geographical area! • See the entire region as 1 large meet-me-room! • No need to build into multiple buildings! • Free VXCs within the metro region ! • Inexpensive Intra-Market Pricing! • Per VXC segmentation! • Don’t have to deploy gear, space, power! • No Monthly Term
  10. 10. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Interconnection Fabric - Long Haul — Simple! ! • Why use a traditional/simple transport provider when a fabric can provide the same service yet so much more long term value?
  11. 11. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM How do I do all that?? Example….
  12. 12. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Physical Cross Connects - “Just say No” ? Multiply this by 10x, 50x, 100x?
  13. 13. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Physical Cross Connects - “Just say No” ? Pros ! • Physically diverse and dedicated! • No lit equipment between you and 3rd party! • More secure (really)! Cons! • Resources to setup (Deploying techs, Remote hands, optics, cables)! • Time to setup (Waiting for days, NRCs, expedite fee)! • Consumes physical port on your and 3rd party devices (routers/switches/panels) regardless of importance of use-case! • High density port consumption leads to more devices, leads to more racks/power/space! • Very Expensive - Monthly MRCs, NRCs! • Requires turn ups, testing! • Troubleshooting….! • Long term commitment (for transport)
  14. 14. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM The “SDN” Alternative • Natural progression…. Moving “up the stack” with virtualization ! • Lots of SDN hype…. This is SDN realized in the public market! • The Meet-Me-Room itself is virtualized (Think 111 8th Ave, 1 Wilshire virtualized)! • Abstraction layer similar to cloud compute! • Decouple the Colo provider and the interconnection provider…. Better neutrality.. ! • Should you really use a fabric provided via the colo provider though? ! • Ability to easily move! ! • But….Will it work?! • PacketExchange tried something similar in the past, technology wasn't ready (Global L2 Domain)! • Newer hardware can provide proper scale, segmentation, QoS, SLAs (if built properly)! • Compute virtualization is now commoditized, nobody is arguing over it anymore.. Same will happen here.! • Start small, just like you did with virtualization….
  15. 15. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Interconnection Fabrics Pros ! • 1 Physical Xconnect to rule them all! • Don’t waste ports on your devices! • Cost of VXCs much less than physical cross connects. In some cases they’re free! • Provisioned Immediately! • No long term commitments! • Size VXCs as needed (10Mbps, 5Gbps, 10Gbps…)! • Analytics, Flow data, “Big Data”! Cons! • Middle man between you and 3rd party! • Security?! • Multi-tenant platform! • Multiple providers/networks on same platform! • Plus all other general cons associated to Public Cloud :)
  16. 16. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Start Small… Start Hybrid…
  17. 17. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Deploy Less Infrastructure at PoPs Traditional:! • Rack at PoPs! • Pay for Rack(s), Power, Xconnects, OOB…! • Manage/Maintain Equipment at the PoP! • Manage individual Xconnects physically! • OOB..
  18. 18. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Deploy Less Infrastructure at PoPs Alternative! • Connect transport directly to network fabrics! • VXCs cost much less than physical cross connects! • No gear to maintain, no rack or power fees..! • But begs the same question as ‘remote peering’
  19. 19. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Great…. What can a CSP/MSP/Host do with it?

  24. 24. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Managed Infrastructure Fabric • Unrelated to Public network! • Customer segmentation ! • Flexible & Scalable
  25. 25. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM 25 Internal Managed Infrastructure Fabric…Extended
  26. 26. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Colocation Use Case • Colo is no longer about simple space and power! • Ecosystem of managed services is much more important! • “Security Blanket” of services! • Ability to mix and match infrastructures “behind the firewall”! • Virtualize specific layers of infrastructure! • Many Colo’s trying to “bolt” this on, easier for MSP to do it
  27. 27. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Internal Managed Infrastructure Fabric…Extended
  28. 28. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Interconnection Fabrics - Use case for Hosts/CSPs/MSPs Provide direct & simple connectivity between your customers infrastructure (colo, cloud, bare metal) and their VPCs in big name clouds.! • ~70% less expensive data transfer In/Out fees opposed to Internet based! • No double BW billing (you + 3rd party cloud)! • Direct, Secure, QoS! • Clean - no VPNs..
  29. 29. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Interconnection Fabrics - Use case for Hosts/CSPs/MSPs Xconnects on behalf of customers! • Barrier to entry much lower (VXCs make sense at much low BW #s where physical may not)! • Your customers have no clue about physical Xconnect fees and don’t want to pay them (Its not just about $/Mbps!)! • Stay competitive - Your competitors may pay less for Xconnects and transport! • The # of carriers available within your ecosystem/facilities are now much greater! • Look at customer Netflow data, offer direct VXCs to networks important to them (ie VOIP & MPLs)
  30. 30. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Interconnection Fabrics - Use case for Hosts/CSPs/MSPs • Transport:! • Don’t pay for large transport links w/ long term commitment! • Buy VXCs per customer, specifically sized to customer’s needs and priced accordingly! • Let the fabric deal with customer segmentation! • Removes risks associated with transport for specific customer use-cases! • Your existing transport provides no more value than 1 simple connection…
  31. 31. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Interconnection Fabrics - Use case for Hosts/CSPs/MSPs “Ask not what an Interconnection Fabric can do for you, ask what you can do for the fabric”
  32. 32. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Interconnection Fabrics - Use case for Hosts/CSPs/MSPs • Low Latency! • Secure! • No data transfer costs! • No VPNs
  33. 33. THE GLOBAL EVENT FOR THE CLOUD AND ! SERVICE PROVIDER ECOSYSTEM Taking it further Driving Value from connectivity! • Not just a COG! • “Future Proof” a business and be responsive to their needs ! • “Cloud” should not break the mold of an organization’s network security design! • Customized deployments
