Case Study: Breakthrough water meter

  1. 1. The Approach Our challenge was to design the mechanics for a new water meter register. We carried out several phases of work on the design and during the development we came up with an idea for a new sensing principle for the absolute encoder: ‘Gray Wheels’ . The End Result The project resulted in Accu Linx , an 8-wheel absolute encoder without batteries that connects the water meter to third party AMR systems. It provides utility companies with a way of accurately, remotely and electronically reading the mechanical odometer for billing purposes and detecting leaks. Through a combination of maths and mechanics, we reduced the tooling outlay for the gearbox variants by 90 per cent – saving Master Meter millions of dollars.
