  2. 2. I originally purchased the Frigidaire 50-pint humidifier (Model FDF50S1) in June of 2009 [i.e. the 2009 version of this product] throughAmazon.com. The unit worked perfectly for two years then stopped dehumidifying. The unit would power on, one could change the fanspeed, but the unit would not dehumidify even though the unit was set to Continuous (CO) and a hyrgrometer showed the basement room tobe at 49% humidity. After contacting a local Frigidaire authorized repairer, I learned these units are considered "throwaway" meaning there are no serviceableparts (except the filter). The units are less expensive to replace than repair, so the manufacturer does not sell any replacement parts (exceptthe filter). My 2009 system had a one year full warranty (long past) and a Years 2-5 "Sealed System" warranty (the sealed refrigerationsystem).I called Frigidaire (eventually directed to Electrolux Home Appliances, the actual manufacturers of Frigidaire dehumidifiers), and wasexpecting to have to pay some cost to get my unit replaced. The rep told me that since the dehumidifier system failed (within the five yearwarranty) the unit would be replaced with a new 50-pint unit FREE OF CHARGE. Frigidaire arranged for me to pick up a new unit (thisunit) at Lowes at no cost to me.Since my unit was REGISTERED ONLINE AT FRIGIDAIRE.COM at the time of purchase, I did not have to submit any receipts nor sendthe old unit back. Therefore, I have two summary points:1. These dehumidifiers only last a few years2. Make sure you register your Frigidaire dehumidifier purchase on-line after you buy. It will make the replacement process alot easier.Works Great, Unless You Want To Use Continuous Draining : I use this in my finished basement, and it does an excellent job of keepingit dry. I used it when it was 98 and humid and it did its job. I had to empty it out about two times a day. When the temperature dropped to the70s and humidity dropped, I emptied it out about once a day. I can be away from my house a couple days at a time, so I hooked up a hose.Initially, it did not drain out of the hose, but instead continued to drain into the bucket. I took off the rear two wheels so it tips back a bit, nowit drains through the hose.If you are considering purchasing this, I would look elsewhere to a product that was designed correctly instead of needing to make anadjustment. If you already purchased this, want to use continuous draining, but do not want to return it, either put some cardboard at the frontof the dehumdifier, or take off the rear wheels so it will drain from the hose instead of into the bucket. Hopefully there are no other designerrors with this product, since it keeps my basement dry.Works Like A Charm : FIRST REVIEW (2 stars):1) The dehumidifier function seems to be quite effective. Our basement was really dank. After a few days, the difference is quite improved.2) The machine does NOT drain into a hose. I tried all of the suggestions seen in other reviews without success. I was really hoping that Icould drain directly into the sump pit, but that is not to be. The water does collect in the tank, so a trip to the basement is required every twodays. Not the end of the world, but not as advertised either.UPDATE - Frigidaire is sending me a modification to the dehumidifier. Per their email of today, "We are pleased to announce we nowfeature a kit that once installed should totally eliminate the drainage issue. We are mailing the kit along with installation instructions direct toyour residence. Please allow 7-10 business days."So, if you are having the drainage problem, you need to contact Frigidaire via their web site and request the kit.I will let you know if it works...UPDATE # 2 - Frigidaire got the parts to me in 3 days. There is a plug for the drain which leads into the tank, diverting the water. The otherpart is an adaptation for the threaded drain on the back. Installation of both required less than one minute.Viola! Water is now coming out of the hose!Although one must wonder why they dont include the modification kit with the original product package, Im quite impressed with Frigidaireservice.Low Noise And Efficient : The two dehumidifiers I have had running in the basement started staying on longer and longer and producingless and less water even while the humidity was increasing - one of them actually stopped producing completely.
  3. 3. When I plugged in the Frigidaire FAD504DUD 50-Pint Dehumidifier, I was first amazed at the noise level. Practically nil compared to theother two units and also much more airflow with the squirrel-cage fan vs the standard bladed/rotating fans on the others.I had a full bucket of water within 6 hours! I ran it through two more full bucket-cycles over the next 24 hours before I made the decision tokeep it. After that, I put it on a raised platform (3 feet) and connected a hose down to the furnace condensate removal pump. Works like acharm!A word about the hose connection. I had no issues as other reviews have mentioned. This must be an improved model. All I had to do wasunscrew the cap on the outlet and connect a hose. No "kit" was required as some others noted. It is important to make sure the unit is level or tipped back slightly for the hose drain to work properly as there is no pump in the FrigidaireFAD504DUD 50-Pint Dehumidifier - it is strictly gravity that moves the water out the hose or into the bucket.Another note regarding this: Most basements have a slope built into the floor! Either towards a standard floor drain or to the outsideperimeter. Do yourself a favor and put a level on top of your Frigidaire FAD504DUD 50-Pint Dehumidifier and shim it level or slightly backand to the right to get the best performance.Oh! Delivery was 3 days with Prime instead of the normal 2 day Prime delivery. I was notified of this extra day at time of purchase. No bigdeal for me but it may effect your buying decision.Update: I have to rescind my comments about not needing a kit for hose drainage. Seems that a "plug" needs to be inserted in the hole thatempties into the bucket. Frigidaire is sending me a one of these plugs so I think that all will be fine in the end. I am keeping the five starrating as the customer service was top-notch. They are even sending me an additional kit to "fix" the second Frigidaire FAD504DUD 50-PintDehumidifier I ordered over the weekend (it shipped today). Why dont they send the "kit" with every dehumidifier? I doubt they cost morethan a few cents each, but Im sure they have their reasons. Ill update if the kit fails to fix the issue (but I am confident that wont benecessary).Dont : Ive got a Whirlpool dehumidifier that has run ALMOST continuously in my basement for 6 years and a Kenmore dehumidifier thathas run pretty much continuously in my garage for 8 years. Throw a little bleach in the water bucket every now and then ... thats all one hasto do with these two appliances.I bought THIS Frigidaire dehumidifier for my bathroom just SIX WEEKS AGO! The electronic control panel has been "sketchy" a couple oftimes since then but tonight it quit working completely. I should have known better (but, alas, I thought lightning did not strike twice in thesame place) because I bought ANOTHER Frigidaire dehumidifier (which Ive also reviewed on AMAZON) just a little over a year ago andits electronic control panel ceased to work just a few days after the one year "warranty" expired. So, I will never buy another Frigidaire or Electrolux (who now owns Frigidaire) product again for as long as I live. Govern yourselvesaccordingly with regard to these poorly engineered products. So Far So Good. : Dried out my 1100sqft basement in about 36 hours. The float takes about 3 sec to install BTW.Frigidaire Fad504dud 50-pint Dehumidifier : Perhaps I am the only unfortunate one that has purchased this unit. I use them in a 1200square foot shop located in Tennessee to keep the humidity around 55 - 60% for rust protection of my tools. They are only needed, depending on the weather conditions, from around March to sometime in October so are not run a lot. The shop stays closed so it does notrequire a lot of run time of the unit to keep the level in the range needed. The first unit was purchased in June of 2009 and did fine in Junethrough October and then in March to May when it stopped removing any of the moisture. The fan ran continuously but the compressornever came on line. Was told by the authorized repair service that the company no longer offered repairs for these units, only replacements. They issued me credit to obtain another unit, which I did in May of 2010 with the same unit, thinking the first one just happened to bedefective. The second unit ran from May through October of 2010 and March through October of 2011. When I turned it on in March 2012,it filled the bucket in short order. I emptied it out and it ran for two days continuously and there was no water in the bucket. The unit lookslike new, the filter needed very little cleaning and I have tried all the different run options to no avail. It is doing exactly the same thing as thefirst one did, the fan runs continuously but the compressor never comes on. Of course it is out of warranty now so I spent over four hundreddollars for two units that only lasted for a total of about twenty-two months. Since Frigidaire offers no replacement parts, the only option isto buy another unit. Well, you can bet that it will never be another Frigidaire product for me. Personally, I think their quality control andrepair policy is pathetic. Hope others have better luck than I have experienced.Glad I Purchase This Dehumidifier : I had a 30 pint dehumidifier in a damp (not wet) basement that couldnt get humidity below 70%. TheFrigidaire 50 pint worked great and got down to 45% - 50% overnight. I keep it set at 50% and the humidity hasnt gone above 50% since. Itis hard to tell when it is running, but doesnt seem to run all the time.I wasnt sure if I should go with the 50 or 70 pint, but the 50 pint I
  4. 4. bought works great. I have a 900 square foot basement that does get very humid and damp without a dehumidifier. The floor & walls actuallylook wet. It also worked well with temperature about 55 deg. It may work well below that, but I havent had the temperature in the basementbelow 55deg. I use the constant drain but it still filled the bucket so I tilted it back a little and havent had to empty the bucket since. I wouldalso say it runs a lot quieter than the 30 pint I bought last year (not a Frigidaire). I have had it a couple of months now and I am verysatisfied. I would have rated 5 stars if the bucket didnt fill until I tilted it back a little.Replaced Defunct Unit : This unit was only purchased to enable us to receive the 70% refund credit due after a previous, like unit failedafter two seasons.Due to the updated design of the drain hose port, not enough water pressure present to force the water through a curled 25 length of hose intothe basement sump pit. Had to cut the hose and re-direct it into a floor drain instead. After much reading of reviews on various manufacturersunits, Ive concluded that NO ONE makes one that will actually last more than a few years at best. The guy at the Electrolux official serviceshop where I went told me that they really arent serviceable. He was surprised that mine had a limited 5 year warranty and said thatFridgidair (Electrolux) had since shortened it dramatically. Check this yourself, because youll surely need it if you purchase this appliance.Electrolux made us send in the nomenclature tag from the new unit, as well as purchase proof, and said that by using the warranty for the oldone would void warranty on the new one. The service shop had disposed of the old one without giving us the required nomenclature label, sowe were told we had the peel off the NEW one. Youll find many negative reviews about their warranty service on Amazon and other sites. In short, Id say it seems to work Ok, but dont expect more than 2 years out of it. Dont even think about ever getting it repaired.Blows Very Hot Air And Outgasses A Terrible Stench : Before buying this machine, I had previously owned a Frigidaire 70-pintdehumidifier. I was very satisfied with it as it ran effectively almost 24/7 for 2.5 years inside my house because I live in a very humid,Southern state. Toward the end of that period, it had gradually become louder and louder until it made a sound similar to the high-pitchedwhine of a snow blower. I finally couldnt take the noise anymore, moved it to the garage, and sought out a new dehumidifier. Because ofthis previous experience, I assumed that buying a Frigidaire again would work out for at least a similar 2.5 years, and this time I opted to buya smaller model, because the 70-pint had been more machine than I actually needed. When this dehumidifier arrived, I was quite pleased as I opened it from the box. It is attractive looking and relatively much more compactthan my previous Frigidaire dehumidifier since it is 50-pint vs my former 70-pint model. I also discovered that it is much quieter than the oldmodel ever was, even in its early days before the blower-whine developed.Unfortunately, as Ive used it this past week, two big deal-breakers (for me, at least) have made it impossible for me to keep using thismachine:1. It blows off air as hot as a small space heater. Admittedly, not the high temperature setting for a space heater, but the low temperaturesetting. However, the prime time of usage of a dehumidifier is summer. It seems to me that if I am already burning up from running it in thedead of winter, I can only imagine how much it will heat up my house in summertime.2. It outgasses toxic fumes that give me a bad headache. I would imagine this is because the hot air is blowing on some plastic parts and, forthat reason, I dont see this problem going away.I opted to return this to Amazon for a refund. However, if you are planning to use this machine in an unfinished basement, a garage orstorage shed, neither of these issues might be a problem for you.Top 10 Best Sellers (#2-#10)Top #2 : Frigidaire FAD504DWD Energy Star 50-pint DehumidifierTop #3 : Friedrich D50AP 50 Pint Dehumidifier with built-in drain pump, front bucket and continuous drainTop #4 : DeLonghi DD50P 50 Pt.
