Many people read about Direct and
Indirect Test. It is nothing but a no load
and blocked rotor test. It is easy to know
what happens in these test by there
names.

1. NO LOAD TEST :
By the name no load test it means that there is no
load- that is load is zero.
In this test, the motor is allowed to run with no-load
at the rated voltage of rated frequency across its
terminals.
Machine will rotate at almost synchronous speed,
which makes slip nearly equal to zero.
The no load parameters can be found from the
voltmeter, ammeter, and wattmeter readings obtained

1. Determine the meters and their ratings based on the
name plate readings of the machine and requirement.
2. Connect the circuit as shown in Fig.
3. Set/check the variac to be at zero output.
4. First switch on the 3ф supply.
5. Gradually increase the voltage applied to the
machine to the rated voltage. Motor runs at a speed
quite close to its synchronous speed.
6. Take the reading of voltmeter, ammeter ,wattmeter&
speed on that particular voltage on the variac and
make a table.

2. BLOCKED ROTOR TEST :
In the blocked rotor test,
the rotor is locked. A low
voltage is applied on the
stator terminals so that there
is full load current in the
stator winding, and the
current, voltage and power
input are measured at that
point. When the rotor is
stationary,

1. Determine the meters ratings based on the name plate
readings .
2. Connect the circuit as shown in Fig.
3. Set/check the variac to be at zero output.
4. First switch on the 3ф supply.
5. Now, keeping the rotor still slowly increase the
autotransformer output until rated current flows .
6. Take the ammeter, voltmeter, and wattmeter readings and
tabulate.
8. Repeat the procedure for other values stator phase current
less than the rated value.

In blocked rotor test, rotor is not allowed to rotate
so the speed of the rotor is zero r.p.m, slip
corresponding to zero speed is unity. Now, increase
the stator voltage till motor current reaches to its
rated value. Note down the readings of voltmeter,
ammeter, wattcmeters and tachometer at different
stator voltages

Performed the no load and blocked rotor test on 3 phase
squirrel cage induction motor for calculating equivalent circuit
parameter and plotted the performance curve from the circle
diagram. We found the Actual losses efficiency of machine.

  • 4. Many people read about Direct and Indirect Test. It is nothing but a no load and blocked rotor test. It is easy to know what happens in these test by there names. NO LOAD TEST : By the name no load test it means that there is no load- that is load is zero. In this test, the motor is allowed to run with no-load at the rated voltage of rated frequency across its terminals. Machine will rotate at almost synchronous speed, which makes slip nearly equal to zero. The no load parameters can be found from the voltmeter, ammeter, and wattmeter readings obtained when the machine is run at no load as shown below:[https://sah786.wordpress.com]or[www.sli deshare.net/SaHussain1]

Motor runs at a speed quite close to its synchronous speed. 6. A low voltage is applied on the stator terminals so that there is full load current in the stator winding, and the current, voltage and power input are measured at that point.
