ECONOMIC TALKING POINTS CONSTRUCTION SPENDING GROWING SLOWLY • The Census Bureau reported $1,218.3 billion in construction activity in August, up 0.5% from July and up 2.5% year over year. Residential (including apartments) was up 0.4% and nonresidential (including commercial real estate) was up 0.5% for the month. • Hurricane rebuilding efforts may spike readings but they won’t impact the amount of additional square footage that’s being delivered. In fact, tight space markets could get tighter as repair/rebuild projects increase competition for supplies and labor with new build projects. This will be good for some landlords.

ECONOMIC TALKING POINTS MULTIFAMILY RENTS FLAT FOR SEPTEMBER, ACCORDING TO YARDI MATRIX • In a recent Prequin survey of major institutional investors, 72% cited high valuations as a concern for the commercial real estate markets and 30% said this may impact future returns to investors. • When combined with the analysis of CoStar data, it is more logical to see why properties located in smaller and secondary markets are outperforming the major markets. This survey suggests that trend will continue.
