Live® ECONOMIC TALKING POINTS Hiring rate stays steady as economic up-cycle continues • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment rose by 130,000 in August and the unemployment rate remained at 3.7%. • The best performing sectors were Professional and Business Services (+37,000), followed by Education and Health Services (+32,000), and Federal Government (+28,000). The FG increase is being attributed to the hiring of temporary workers for the 2020 Census. The largest decline in August was Retail Trade (-11,100).

Live® ECONOMIC TALKING POINTS REITs beat stocks in August as falling interest rates accelerate future expectations • The FTSE Nareit Index gave a total return of 3.40% vs. the S&P 500 Index total return of 3.17% for the month of August. With the Fed moving on short rates and the 10-year breaking below 2%, REITs are natural winners. • As interest rates fall, fixed income strategies will struggle to provide meaningful yields. REITs are currently giving an average dividend yield of 4.06% and are thus more attractive. With leverage, private real estate can do even better.
