Adressing the Problem
Current state of research:
•Grants play an increasing role in scientific careers
•Contradictory results whether gender bias occurs in grant
allocation
•Strong gender disparities can be observed on the level of
careers in science and innovation
= Relations between Grants,
Performance, Career and Gender
5.
Methodology: Research Approach
• Selecting crucial variables through literature review
• Theoretical approach translated in a series of specific models that will be tested
using qualitative and quantitative research methods based on:
existing datasets (multivariate and multilevel analysis)
newly generated data from 5 Research Funding Organizations to produce own qualitative and
experimental data on policies and practices
Interviews and observations, qualitative text analysis, quantitative multi‐level analysis and
event history analysis
• Scientific Advisory Committee to assess and support project development (Suzanne
de Cheveigné (FR), Monica Gaughan (US), Jeff Hearn (UK), Michael Meuser (DE), Helga Nowotny (AT),
Rossella Palomba (IT), Renata Siemieńska (PL), Agnes Wold (SW)
• Coproduction of knowledge in an interactive and participatory approach
• Stakeholder committee will be actively consulted to make the research more
relevant for the science system
6.
GRANteD will contribute to
• A gender‐fair research funding system by:
Identifying factors that cause gender imbalances before, during, and after
grant submission
Identifying the occurrence, dynamics and causes of gender bias and its
consequences for researcher’s careers
• Developing a systematic analytical approach that can handle the complex
nature of gender disparities in grant allocation processes
• Better understanding of the complex nature of gender inequalities in
research and innovation funding and R&I careers (scientific impact)
• Greater awareness of the risks of gender bias in grant allocation
processes and research careers
• Greater gender equality in research careers
• Promoting Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI)
7.
Expected Research papers on four main themes
• How grants are affected by gender and have an impact on careers
• Detecting gender stereotyping and gender roles in language use
• Comparative paper on gender differences in application behavior and
institutional support:
• Gendered practices in grant allocation processes
• And “Synthesis paper”, “Integrating the results from cases studies” and
“Policy brief on recommendations”
