  9. 9. there is outreach program to bring the benefits, knowledge and skill to industry</li></li></ul><li>Areas Needing Urgent Attention<br />Attracting many young entrants into courses<br />The supply, training & accreditation of cadastralsurveyors, engineering surveyors and spatial science professionalsprofessional & technician - quality & numbers required <br />Building the academic base, - so is valued, of high quality & sustainable<br />Establish whole of industry approach for<br />workforce planning (demand & supply) & monitoring <br />Addressing industry wide issues<br />“image” and recognition strengthening – regain influence with senior levels of government<br />

Required to Address the Issues<br />The WILL to do – from the whole industry and needs to be an ongoing commitment<br />LEADERSHIP, ACCOUNTABILITY & COOPERATION, –from allparts of industry & academe<br />STRATEGY – a plan to achieve the requirements<br />ENERGY, RESOURCES & MONEY –pool resources? - some $s to commence & to raise required $s<br />FOCUS & TENACITY & TIME, –will take a number of years<br />ASSESS PROGRESS REGULARLY & ADJUSTMENT - need to establish a framework that will maintained by stakeholders – not one off<br />

What was done in July & August<br />Initial meeting of some of key industry (private sector, government and academia) - <br />Outline schema to address issues was developed<br />Small working groups established in areas of …<br />Attracting schools leavers into training<br />Establishing the sustainable academic base<br />Addressing cadastral surveying – shortage, training, accreditation<br />Raising $s & resources required<br />

What planned for October 2010<br />Some initial ideas from the small working groups<br />Another meeting of wide variety of industry players<br />Post Oct 2010?<br />Will depend on-<br />Who steps forward to lead<br />Ability of various segments of the industry to work holistically<br />Who willing to accept accountability <br />

In Conclusion<br />We have a serious problem<br />Not insurmountable – addressed similar 30 yrs ago<br />Will take <br />Leadership<br />Full Cooperation -all industry segments & major employers<br />Time, effort, resources & $s <br />A solution for the future – not the present or past<br />NB – The Engineering Industry has the same problem –Industry National Task Force set up – can learn from them<br />

What if don’t address?<br />Some Uni programs will be closed down – an endangered species??<br />Skills Shortages will get worse<br />Poaching intensifies– eg engineering to mining<br />More OS recruitment – meeting the need???<br />Individual firms & elements seek to maximise own interest<br />Will muddle along somehow<br />Long slow decline - Won’t be great<br />Recommend the industry to your children?<br />
