System of Wheat Intensification
(SWI) in Sindhuli, Nepal
Presented by:
Debraj Adhikari
Plant Protection Officer
DADO, Sindhuli
INTRODUCTION
• Wheat is third ranked cereal crop in Nepal.
SWI in Sindhuli
• It is generally grown as winter crop after rice.
• Wheat cultivation in Nepal is done by traditional
method. Broadcasting of seed is common planting
method of wheat.
• In present situation, there is great scope to increase
productivity of wheat for food security.
INTRODUCTION
• The System of Wheat Intensification or SWI,
is an adaptation of techniques used in the
SWI in Sindhuli
System of Rice Intensification (SRI).
• SRI is successfully practiced in over 35
countries, and gave increased paddy yields of
66-87% (Styger and Ibrahim, 2009).
INTRODUCTION
• Last year SWI was tried in Kailali and some district
of western Nepal.
SWI in Sindhuli
• The SWI yield in Kailali was about 8 t/ha. Several
Indian states promoting SWI in India in large scale
(Personal communication R. Uprety, 2012).
• Though, no work has been taken up to assess the
SWI practice in Sindhuli as yet.
• Hence, a study was conducted to determine the
performance of SWI practice in Nepal.
MATERIALS AND METHODS

December 2011 to 2012
Integrated Crop and Water Management Program
(ICWMP) Farmer Field School (FSS).
• The study area is 397 masl in altitude and the
location is 27008.730' N and 086003.795' E.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
• Plot size 4×1 m.
• fertilizers

• Germinated seed of wheat variety Bhirkuti sown on
6th Dec.2011
• Spacing 20x20 cm.
• Irrigation was provided during CRI and tillering
stage.
• Weeding was done manually.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
• Vegetative

In SWI, the tiller numbers and plant height
was found higher i.e. 25 and 61.4.
SWI in Sindhuli
The average tiller numbers and plant
height in conventional broadcasted wheat
was 2.6 and 57.8 cm. Whereas, in line
sown wheat 3.4 and 60 cm was found
respectively.

Conclusion
•The result is interesting and farmers are also
happy final yield and compare with
SWI in Sindhuli
conventional method of wheat cultivation.
•There were some impressive results in different
parts of world.
•Multi location study trials and scaling up of
SWI across various parts of the country for
farmers should be conducted. It may be a
measure to increase yield.
