INTRODUCTION
• The immense pressure on the world's
environment means that measures must be
taken today to safeguard natural resources for
tomorrow.
DEFINITION
• How to meet environmental and social
responsibilities and at the same time
improve profitability.
• is the optimization of construction activities in a
way that does not have harmful effects on
resources, surroundings and living ecosystem. It
is a way of minimizing harmful environmental
impacts of construction projects.
• to describe the application of sustainable
development to the construction industry.
WHY WE NEED SUSTAINABLE
CONSTRUCTION?
• To maintain the conditions in which nature and
humans can survives
• Most of national waste production comes from the
construction sector
• Improving the quality of buildings and services
• To avoid the increasing of waste material resources
• Ensures people have water and resources, and
adopting its practices protects the environment and
human health
PROBLEM THAT ARISE
1)Financial constraints
• To maintain a balance between environmental
protection, economic development and social
development in prioritising sustainability in
industry which implementing sustainable
practices need significant amount of time and
cost investment.
2)Lack awareness and knowledge
• lack of new knowledge among contractor caused
another obstacle in achieving sustainable
construction(failure in reaching a consensus among
experienced developers and the younger
generation
• Environmental issues were not given a priority in
education
• Younger generation those are educated with
knowledge on sustainable construction face
difficulties in disseminating theoretical
understanding of sustainability into practice.
• Most developers in Malaysia are profit-driven and
they respond to client demands.
BENEFITS/ADVANTAGES
1) Effective protection to the environment
- Reduce water shortages
- Usage of less raw materials
- Including energy saving materials
-Least possible of land degradation
2) Maintenance of high and stable levels of economic
- Lower annual cost of energy, water maintenance
- Usage of sustainable materials for sustainable building
causes the first cost to be same as or lower than
traditional building
- leads to productivity of occupants caused by less
absenteeism
- Reduce expenses dealing with complaints
- Lower infrastructure cost ( e.g waste water treatment
plants, power plants)
3) Socially benefits
- Improves health and performance ( e.g sick building
syndrome, asthma and allergy)
- Creates positive psychology and social experiences from
the features of building
- Transmission of knowledge on importance o sustainable
building
CHARACTERISTIC/CRITERIA
1)Protecting and enhancing the environment
• Use natural resources efficiently
• Minimize waste by using the concept of
3R(reduse,reuse,recycle)
• Maximize environment care by limiting
pollution
• Protect diversity of nature
2)Meeting social needs
• Consider the human health service
• Affordable house because different level of income
• Ensure access to food and clean water as it’s a need
• Create a place that well built and enough space
3)Promoting economic success
• Flexibility to adopt to future changes of user needs
and economic fluctuation
• Provide necessary access to facilities, service, good
and others to reduce the use of transportation that
can be effect the environment
• Make opportunities for culture, leisure and
recreation that readily available to all.
APPLICATION SUSTAINABLE CONSTIN
CONSTRUCTION
1) Wool Bricks
• Developed by Spanish and Scottish
researches with an aim to ‘obtain a
composite that was more sustainable, non-
toxic, using abundant local materials that
would mechanically improve the bricks’
strength, these wool bricks are exactly what
the name suggests.
2) Solar tiles
• Traditionally roof tiles are
either mined from that ground
or set from concrete or clay –
all energy intensive methods.
3) Sustainable concrete
• Whilst 95% of building’s CO2
emissions are a result of the
energy consumed during its
life, there is much that can be
done to reduce that 5%
associated with construction.
4) Paper insulation
• Made from recycled
newspapers and cardbord,
paper-based insulation is a
superior alternative to
chemical foams.
5)Triple-Glazed window
• In fact, super-efficient
windows would better
describe this particular
building materials.
