2. PROBLEM STATEMENT
•There is a sophisticated and growing market demand for organically grown, fresh
fruits and vegetables in our local market which doesn’t match with the increasing
demand for them. In western Uganda close to 80% of fruit and vegetable growing
farms use inorganic techniques of farming like use of chemically made pesticides and
insecticides.
•This has forced a growing number of people to buy the expensive imported fruits and
vegetables which are chemical free but of low quality.
3. SOLUTION AND UNIQUENESS
We use present and future organic farming techniques to produce organic, tasty, and nutritional
vegetables. We start with an existing farm that has an experience of three years in organic growing of fruits
and vegetables. To that we add in the production of strawberries will allow double utilization of the climate
controlled portion of the overhead.
4. HOW TO TRANSFORM FOOD SYSTEM INTO SOMETHING SUSTAINANBLE RESILIENT AND INCLUSIVE
•Reducing the prices of agro-inputs to make them more affordable for rural farmers and
even people living below the poverty line which is common in Africa.
•Empowering women as the key engines and pace makers for most of the agricultural
activities through training them on modern farming technologies.
•Preventing climate change and its negative effects like prolonged droughts. This can be
done through reducing on deforestation .
•Making agriculture lessons compulsory even in lower learning institutions and make the
young people love agriculture since a tree can only be easily bent while still young. This
will promote utilization of idle resources.
5. HOW SIANI AS A NETWORK CAN CONTRIBUTE IN THE FUTURE
Through supporting agribusiness Incubation centers in upper learning institutions as this can help
students fin tune their agribusiness ideas and bring them to reality.
Through supporting agriculture clubs in lower institutions of learning to make young people love and
appreciate agriculture.
Through working with different NGOs that promote agriculture so that they can train rural farmers
modern farming techniques.
