- Here are the results from the climate impact analysis. It covers not just the activities at Max. It takes into account the calculated green house gas emissions all the way from the farmers land to the guests table. The beefs climate impact is by far our biggest challenge. So we asked ourselves. How can we make a hamburger with less climate impact?
- In the workshops, the first question TNS asked Max to consider was: “Is a sustainable hamburger chain possible?” The Natural Step Framework uses 4 principles to define sustainability. Using the Sustainability Principles, Max was able to assess the gap between their current operations and true sustainability, focussing their strategy on closing that gap. In a sustainable society, nature is not subject to systematically increasing: [Click 1] …concentrations of substances extracted from the earth’s crust Max made the following changes: • All restaurants are now powered by 100% wind energy. • Toys requiring batteries have been removed from kids’ meals. • All company vehicles are low carbon, such as Toyota Prius. [Click 2] …concentrations of substances produced by society Max made the following changes: • No GMOs are used in Max products. • All used frying oil is converted into biodiesel. • Significantly increased the recycling rates (e.g. cardboard, food wastes, metal, electronic equipment, etc.). [Click 3] …degradation by physical means, Max made the following changes: • All fish is sourced from responsibly managed fisheries (MSC-certified). • Most paper products are FSC-certified. • Reforestation through Plan Vivo certified projects in Uganda and Mozambique. [Click 4] …and, in that society, people are not subject to conditions that systemically undermine their capacity to meet their needs. Max made the following changes: • No longer use transfats. • Since 2005 Max products have been recognised as the healthiest in the industry. • Over half of the restaurants have at least one staff member with a disability. • Max’s leadership program includes sections on sustainability leadership that are based on the FIRO theory. • Max has partnered with TNS’ Real Change program to research social sustainability.
