Introduction
Pharmacy is a combination of art and science of formulation
and dispensing medications and the provision of drug-
related information to the public.
Definition: Social pharmacy is defined as the science which
deals with the social aspects of the profession of pharmacy.
In social pharmacy, the drug or medicine is studied from the
social, scientific and humanistic perspectives.
Social pharmacy as a Discipline
 Social pharmacy is defined as a discipline concerned with
the behavioural sciences relevant to the utilization of
medicine by both consumers and healthcare professionals.
 In addition to behavioural and psychological aspects related
to pharmacy, areas of pharmaceutical administration such as
pharmacy management and marketing are also seen as
fundamental componetns of social pharmacy.
 It consists of all the social factors that influence medicine
use, such as medicine and health related beliefs, attitudes,
rules, relationships and processes.
Scope of social pharmacy
1) Drug information and their action: Pharmacy
provides grasp on pharmacology, toxicology,
information related to drugs along with the
understanding of biological and physical science
community.
2) Drug utilization: Stock control includes the purchase
of drugs, inspection and alteration in operations that
demand attention along with prescription and
dispensing of controlled drugs.
3) Drug distribution: Quantities of drugs are
available outside of pharmacy so that it is
controlled for the internal distribution of
patients.
4) Drug selection:
 Rational drug therapy
 Training of health care professionals
 Maintenance based on clinical guidelines
 Essential drug concept
Role of pharmacist in public health
The pharmacists play an important role in frontline and
intensive care units. By his knowledge and skills,
pharmacists support public by helping in prevention of long
term ailments, promoting healthy lifestyles and
encouraging patients to improve their dosage regimens.
1) Central Pharmacist Responsibilities:
 To ensure that established policies and procedures are
followed.
 Checkup for accuracy of dosage prepared,
 Unit dose formulations,
 Intravenous mixture,
 Provide for proper drug control:
a) Ensure that drugs are stored and dispensed properly.
E.g. investigational drugs
b) Ensure that all state/federal drugs laws are followed.
 To ensure that good techniques are used in compounding
intravenous mixtures and extemporaneous preparation.
 Provide for proper record keeping and billing
 Patient medication record.
 Extemporaneous compound record.
 Intravenous mixtures record billing.
 Investigational drug record.
 Reports (monthly loaded records).
2) General Responsibilities of A Pharmacist:
 Dispensing (or) compounding of drugs
 Patient counseling,
 Drug information services to physician,
 Health care promotions (or) health services,
 Respond to symptoms or minor ailment,
 Consultation to pregnant women, children geriatric patients
regarding health care.
3) Direct Patient Counseling Area:
 Effective/ineffectiveness of drugs.
 Side effects,
 Toxicity of drugs,
 Allergic drug reactions
 Drug interaction
 Appropriate therapeutic outcome.
4)Direct Patient Care Area:
 Medication to be self-administered in the hospital.
 Discharge medication.
 Provide education to the pharmacists, clerks,
students, residents and other nursing staffs.
 Sometimes provide information to the physician
and medical students regarding the new drug
information.

  • 3. Introduction Pharmacy is a combination of art and science of formulation and dispensing medications and the provision of drug- related information to the public. Definition: Social pharmacy is defined as the science which deals with the social aspects of the profession of pharmacy. In social pharmacy, the drug or medicine is studied from the social, scientific and humanistic perspectives.
  • 4. Social pharmacy as a Discipline  Social pharmacy is defined as a discipline concerned with the behavioural sciences relevant to the utilization of medicine by both consumers and healthcare professionals.  In addition to behavioural and psychological aspects related to pharmacy, areas of pharmaceutical administration such as pharmacy management and marketing are also seen as fundamental componetns of social pharmacy.  It consists of all the social factors that influence medicine use, such as medicine and health related beliefs, attitudes, rules, relationships and processes.

Scope of social pharmacy 1) Drug information and their action: Pharmacy provides grasp on pharmacology, toxicology, information related to drugs along with the understanding of biological and physical science community. 2) Drug utilization: Stock control includes the purchase of drugs, inspection and alteration in operations that demand attention along with prescription and dispensing of controlled drugs.
  • 6. 3) Drug distribution: Quantities of drugs are available outside of pharmacy so that it is controlled for the internal distribution of patients. 4) Drug selection:  Rational drug therapy  Training of health care professionals  Maintenance based on clinical guidelines  Essential drug concept
  • 7. Role of pharmacist in public health The pharmacists play an important role in frontline and intensive care units. By his knowledge and skills, pharmacists support public by helping in prevention of long term ailments, promoting healthy lifestyles and encouraging patients to improve their dosage regimens. 1) Central Pharmacist Responsibilities:  To ensure that established policies and procedures are followed.  Checkup for accuracy of dosage prepared,  Unit dose formulations,  Intravenous mixture,
  • 8.  Provide for proper drug control: a) Ensure that drugs are stored and dispensed properly. E.g. investigational drugs b) Ensure that all state/federal drugs laws are followed.  To ensure that good techniques are used in compounding intravenous mixtures and extemporaneous preparation.  Provide for proper record keeping and billing  Patient medication record.  Extemporaneous compound record.  Intravenous mixtures record billing.  Investigational drug record.  Reports (monthly loaded records).
  • 9. 2) General Responsibilities of A Pharmacist:  Dispensing (or) compounding of drugs  Patient counseling,  Drug information services to physician,  Health care promotions (or) health services,  Respond to symptoms or minor ailment,  Consultation to pregnant women, children geriatric patients regarding health care. 3) Direct Patient Counseling Area:  Effective/ineffectiveness of drugs.  Side effects,  Toxicity of drugs,  Allergic drug reactions  Drug interaction  Appropriate therapeutic outcome.
  • 10. 4)Direct Patient Care Area:  Medication to be self-administered in the hospital.  Discharge medication.  Provide education to the pharmacists, clerks, students, residents and other nursing staffs.  Sometimes provide information to the physician and medical students regarding the new drug information.
