  4. 4. SEO Press Release Tips: 7 Mistakes & 7 Easy FixesIntroductionIf youre confused about the differences between a traditional press release, anSEO press release and a plain online article, youre not alone. They all can helpdrive traffic to your website. But like all tools, using them in the ways they areintended can make a big difference in the results they achieve. For example, you can use a rake to dig a hole, but a shovel will do the job better and faster.Lets start with press releases. Whats the big difference between a traditionalpress release and an SEO press release? Well, for one thing, an SEO releaseis not really a press release any more. Its really a news release, or a mediarelease, and heres why.The term press is a throw back to pre-internet times when press releases weretyped on paper and wired or mailed to newspaper, radio and TV journalists – thepress. If they were interested in the headline, they would use it in their newsreporting and the subject of the release would get free publicity. But with an SEO press release (or news release, etc) it doesnt necessarilymatter if the traditional news media ever sees it. Of course, if they do and yourstory appears on the front page of Newsweek, that would obviously give youtremendous publicity. But its easy enough to get your release to appear inGoogle News, as well as spread around the web via RSS feeds. Thats plentyof attention to attract visitors to your site. And even if one release doesnt pull inthe number of visitors that you hoped, its entirely possible to get a hundred ormore quality backlinks to your site for some nice off-page SEO benefits. If youtake care to select credible submission sites that keep your PR postedpermanently, those backlinks will serve your site long term.Articles are good at driving traffic and creating backlinks, too. And they are very © PressReleaseBasics.com 1

But unless the author is an established expert, or the articleis based on substantial and verifiable research, they usually dont convey anytype of authority or believability. Thats where press releases have a built-inhidden advantage, as youll see when you get further into this report. © PressReleaseBasics.com 2
  6. 6. SEO Press Release Tips: 7 Mistakes & 7 Easy Fixes1 Using sales letter hypeIf your press release has lots of adjectives like awesome and amazing...,fabulous new out-of-this-world... and totally the best ever..., delete thosephrases now! A reputable distribution site will either reject your release, ask youto rewrite it, or edit out those over-the-top phrases. So save everyone sometime and just leave them out.Instead of using adjectives, demonstrate with facts. For example, instead ofsaying that “Eating a raw food diet will make you feel amazing”, find somespecific examples. Youll have to spend some time researching, but usingaccurate facts and stating your sources will boost your credibility andtrustworthiness. Listen to the difference in this sentence: “According to a studyin Weight Loss Journal, people who have been on the raw food diet for sixweeks report increased energy and fewer allergic reactions.”With that kind of research and writing, you present yourself as a reliableresource instead of just another advertiser looking for a sale.2 Writing with all opinion and no factsThis one may not get your PR booted from the distribution sites, but its frownedupon. Making unsupported statements about your companys product or beingtoo vague is not as effective or credible as making statements that can besupported by facts. For example, saying that your companys weight loss product helps people tolose lots of weight is not as effective as saying that 5 people reported losing 10pounds in 2 weeks as a result of using your product. So spend the extra time to © PressReleaseBasics.com 3
  7. 7. SEO Press Release Tips: 7 Mistakes & 7 Easy Fixesresearch for specific facts and include them in your press releases wheneverpossible – it will help you build credibility.3 Writing in a tone that’s too casual for newsBloggers and sales letter copywriters intentionally use ‘I’ and you in theircontent because it creates a personal and friendly tone. In fact, Im doing it nowin this report. A casual tone is great for sharing helpful information and opinions. But press releases are distant cousins to news stories, so theyre written usingthe third person: he, she,it, they. Using the third person creates a sense ofdistance and an appearance of objectivity, which is similar to social proof. Inthe world of sales and copywriting, social proof appears on the sales page astestimonials. When a customer says a product is good, the opinion carries more weight withprospective customers than if the product owner says its good. And pressreleases create that same sense of having a neutral third party saying goodthings about your business. Social proof is powerful stuff and can go a long waytoward building buyers trust and confidence.4 Using keywords in the wrong placesDont wait until the end of your press release to mention your keyword. Yourreaders need to see the keyword as soon as possible to decide to read yourrelease. And the search engines need to know your topic as soon a possible todetermine what the page is about, and hopefully send it to the top of the searchresults list. So use targeted keywords at the beginning of your press release. © PressReleaseBasics.com 4
  8. 8. SEO Press Release Tips: 7 Mistakes & 7 Easy FixesPick one main keyword or keyword phrase, plus a couple of related keywords asseasoning. Place your main keyword in the headline toward the beginning, then again in the first sentence of your press release and once moresomewhere else in the body. Sprinkle your secondary keywords lightly (once ortwice is plenty) within the copy. Then forget about them and write naturally.Youll make the search engines happy and your readers happy at the same time.5 Repeating the same keyword phrase too many timesUsing the same keyword more than 3 or 4 times in 400 words of copy begins tosound unprofessional and can set off Googles keyword stuffing alarms. Whenin doubt, read your press release out loud to see how it sounds. If one word orphrase starts to stand out, youre probably using it too often. For example, ifyoure targeting your companys name, XYZ Widgets, use alternate phraseslike the widget company or simply the company instead of repeating XYZWidgets in every sentence.6 Submitting to useless free distribution sitesOr course, not all of the free distribution sites are worthless. But many of themare really a waste of time, so its important to be selective. You can end upspending hours (or lots of money outsourcing) by submitting to free sites thatnever send your PR any further than their own site. They also may have lowpage rank or such low standards that your PR will be hanging around with acrowd that Google wont like. Many of the low quality sites end up going out of business, and your link will diewith their website. Its much better to be selective and submit to the high quality © PressReleaseBasics.com 5
  9. 9. SEO Press Release Tips: 7 Mistakes & 7 Easy Fixesfree sites, or pay an affordable $20 fee at sites like WebWire.com, to get longterm SEO benefits.7 Using only one press releaseMany people think that one press release will be a traffic solution for their site. But when you stop to think about it, do people only submit one article to articledirectories, or post one blog post and then sit back and hold their breath untiltraffic floods in? Of course not! Press releases were never intended to be one-shot wonders that would push a magic traffic button that stays in a permanenton position. The way to maximize the link-building and buzz-building power of pressreleases is to develop a campaign that puts your companys name out on theinternet on a regular basis. Send one out every month so people will becomefamiliar with your companys name. People like doing business with familiarpeople rather than strangers. So when you think press release, think in termsof 3, 6 or 12 month campaigns. And theres more....Hopefully youve learned a few tips that will help you get better results from yourpress releases. Theyre my favorite way to drive traffic to my web sites, especially new ones. When PRs are optimized for the right keywords, they canbuild hundreds of targeted backlinks quickly and in a way that Google likes. And there are several free distribution sites that are very effective. I keep aspreadsheet with a list of the sites I like and mark the others as dont bother –it saves a lot of time and gives me data I can use to fine tune my press releasetraffic campaigns. © PressReleaseBasics.com 6
