16. 19. FAQ

Why not just promote aquaponic farming?

Our goal is to address multiple community needs with a NPO enterprise that promotes real economic development. And in fact, it is desirable that local farmers may use the Lighthouse to start for profit aquaponic and hydroponic businesses of their own.

Won’t Wal-Mart just reduce prices to run you out of business?

The NPO model is designed to fund operations, without a need for extensive profit. The farming and market model was selected to create low cost, local commerce. The commercial building restoration was picked to create lowest overhead. Our goal is to always offer quality goods at 10 to 15% below lowest market prices.

Aren’t you simply killing local businesses with this?

First, we will be careful with community and location selection. If a local farmer market or small grocery is already in existence, we will either partner or avoid this community. Secondly, this NPO will open up a whole set of new businesses. We will buy local farmer produce to supplement the offering. We will make fresh and affordable produce available for local restaurants. We will buy local agriculture supplies. We will hire 8 to 24 local workers. We will place lighthouse branded products in local retail stores.

How is this ecologically responsible?

Aquaponics is a self contained eco-system that provides the most energy efficient method of food production from a perspective of electricity, water consumption, pollution and carbon outputs. USDA is currently considering certifying hydroponics and aquaponics as “organic.”
