THE JOURNEY OF ANALYTICS Descriptive analytics is a preliminary stage of data processing that creates a summary of historical data to yield useful information and possibly prepare the data for further analysis. ... Descriptive analytics is sometimes said to provide information about happened. Predictive analytics encompasses a variety of statistical techniques from predictive modelling, machine learning, and data mining that analyze current and historical facts to make predictions about future or otherwise unknown events. Prescriptive analytics not only anticipates what will happen and when it will happen, but also why it will happen. Further, prescriptive analytics suggests decision options on how to take advantage of a future opportunity or mitigate a future risk and shows the implication of each decision option. Prescriptive analytics can continually take in new data to re-predict and re-prescribe, thus automatically improving prediction accuracy and prescribing better decision options. HOW PREDICTIVE ANALYTICS IMPACT EVERY DAY LIFE • Waze is the world's largest community-based traffic and navigation app. • By connecting drivers to one another and applying machine learning predictive analytics, Waze helps people create local driving communities that work together to improve the quality of everyone's daily driving. • BENEFITS: potentially avoid the frustration of sitting in traffic, cluing drivers in to a police trap or shaving five minutes off of a commute by showing new routes never thought of or known about • By plugging into an algorithm such user data as historical purchases, links clicked, wish list items, number of visits to the site and, Amazon can predict buyer activity accurately enough to send items to its warehouses before merchandise has even been purchased. • For example, if there's a large demand for flip-flops in Florida, the local fulfillment centers will fill up with flip-flops before orders are even placed. • BENEFITS: faster buying process and shorter delivery time for the consumer while efficiency by Amazon reduces shipping costs • When Netflix converted from rentals to streaming media, it stepped on the gas of using predictive analytics to understand their audience. • Today Netflix knows what summaries users are reading, how long they spend surfing titles, what they ultimately watch, and for how long. This approach allowed Netflix to know what users wanted before the actual users knew what they wanted. • BENEFITS: enabled Netflix to acquire & develop superior content which created an enhanced the user experience. Number of users swelled to a record 110m and sales to exceed $11b in 2017.
