  2. 2. What is a record label?A record label is a brand associated with the marketing ofmusic recording and music videos. A record companysrole is to;• Co-ordinate the production, manufacturing anddistribution of music.• Market and promote the artist/song.• Enforce copyright protection of songs and musicvideos.• Conduct talent scouting and development of newartists.• To maintain contracts with recording artists and theirmanagers.
  3. 3. Major or independent?Our artist would be signed to an independentrecord label as their sound is very unique andnot very commercial.
  4. 4. Existing?Our existing artist would be signed to a labelsuch as Domino Recording Company as they suitthe genre that they produce, alternative rockand alternative pop.
  5. 5. History?Founded in 1993, by Laurence Bell andhis partner Jacqui Rice. They are a UKbased record company, however manyof the early releases were by Americanartists. Success was not immediate, aslabels such as Domino, who werereleasing more established Americanrock and unusual British music, weremarginalised during the Britpop era,but a steady stream of new signingsgave the label increasing credibility.Recent high profile releases. They areone of the longest runningindependent UK record label at thistime. They have signed other artistssuch as Franz Ferdinand, The Kills andWild Beasts.

What is copyright?Copyright is the exclusive legal right, given to anoriginator or an assignee to print, publish,perform, film, or record literary, artistic, ormusical material, and to authorize others to dothe same. Record labels are responsible for thisby protecting the songs and music videos of theartists that they have signed.
  7. 7. What to consider?When using copyrighted music, making sure youhave permission from the owner is crucial. Weare not allowed to present the music as our ownor present false permission. We are allowed touse the music in the video with genuinepermission from the original source and alsoacknowledge the permission given.
  8. 8. Use?Knowing this information about recordcompanies, we can now apply them to ourproduction by seeking permission from theoriginal owners of the music and acknowledgethat the permission has been given, as well asincluding protecting the ownership of of themusic in our own production by placing ourlabel on cover art, digipak and advert.
