Online personal branding

Online personal branding is a requirement for all professionals. The common argument of the experts is: you have a digital footprint - in social media and on the internet - so people are already making impressions of you. Take control of their perceptions. More importantly, you have an opportunity to proactively project your personal brand onto networks. Two other advantages of personal branding are that it forces you to be visionary of your career goals and helps you land favorable employment.

  2. 2. Introduction Most career experts agree professionals should participate in personal branding and suggest coming from a marketing perspective – mimic the way companies brand themselves. I suggest a functional perspective. Think in terms of your skill set, aura, and identity (and where there is overlap). Project your personal brand onto networks. Copyright 2015 Ryan M. Frischmann 2
  3. 3. Weaknesses With Marketing Perspective  Differentiating yourself like a company differentiates itself is challenging. There are far too many people.  Often caters to ‘top flight’ professionals (for the reason mentioned above).  Identifying a target audience is difficult for early career professionals.  Involves too much self-promotion.  Can be reactionary – a top-down response. 4. 4. Why A Functional Perspective?  Each element can be assessed separately & relates to every professional. It is mainstream.  Skill sets represent your functional value.  Aura represents your emotional value.  Identity represents your connectedness.  Adaptable for career planning & development. (Works with Skills-Based Approach.) It is flexible.  Advantages in thinking from a ‘bottom-up’ approach. It is proactive.  Balances promotion with prevention. Copyright 2015 Ryan M. Frischmann 4
