  3. 3. How to Make a Resume that Catches Your Target Employer’s Attention Resumes are essential tools for job searches. They summarize the qualifications and experiences that tell future employers whether or not you deserve to be hired. Here are a few tips on how to make one that catches their attention. Make it relevant to your target job. Placing all kinds of skills, interests, and work experiences would crowd the document and overshadow important qualifications. Only list the qualifications that directly relate to your desired position. For instance, if you want to apply as a cook, your experience as a bank clerk would be irrelevant. Be specific. Be specific in writing down your accomplishments by making use of exact amounts, numbers, or percentages. For example, instead of simply stating “organized a medical mission that helped the poor”, you can sound more convincing by saying “organized a three-day medical mission that served 10,000 children in Africa”. Use the right verbs. You can put more emphasis and value on your accomplishments by using power verbs. Using terms like “improved”, “resolved”, “spearheaded”, and Cosmic Coaching Centre “increased” is better than simply saying “did”, “helped”, or “made”. The verbs that you use also give prospective employers an idea of what positions you are capable of. For example, you can be trusted more with leadership tasks if you use verbs such as “mentored”, “collaborated”, “initiated”, “organized”, and “led”. Use bullets. Bullets are easier to read compare to a lengthy paragraph that enumerates your skills. They help you emphasize your assets and make them noticeable. Reading long sentences can annoy and bore the employer. Keep it short. As much as possible, keep the document short so that it could be easily read. Most busy companies can only scan your file for 15 to 30 seconds. Eliminate filter words and irrelevant experiences. Give active contact details. Use phone numbers and emails that you always check and update. As soon as you send in your application, keep in mind that employers may contact you any time. It is important to respond promptly to avoid missing the job opportunity. Have an online copy ready. Prepare electronic copies of resumes since a lot of job-hunts can also be done online. You can visit jobsearching websites, make an online profile, and upload your resume. See to it that you use relevant keywords so that the website’s job-match software can easily connect your qualifications to potential employers. If you do not feel confident in creating resumes, you can invest in a career coach who specializes in resume and career services. A coach can also help you in the job hunting and application process. They can suggest possible places of employment and help you prepare for successful interviews. Page 3
