Using data from the British Crime Survey, 2007-2008: Teaching dataset, this report investigates the association between police effectiveness and public confidence, contrasting it with the association between police fairness and public confidence. This report also examines how the stronger of the two initial associations above is impacted by ethnicity, as a historically troubled relationship between the police and certain ethnic groups could be improved with a greater understanding of how ethnicity influences confidence in the police. Key literature is discussed followed by a critical outline of the methods used. The findings are presented and discussed with reference to the literature, and conclusions are drawn regarding implications for government policy and further research.
