The Portuguese <ul><li>EARLY MODERN EUROPE </li></ul><ul><li>Roughly the 15 th Century to the late 18 th Century (1400s – 1700s) </li></ul><ul><li>This period is comprised of The Renaissance, The (Protestant) Reformation, The Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment </li></ul><ul><li>This period ends with the beginning of Industrialization </li></ul><ul><li>This is the time when Britain, Spain, Portugal, and other European countries begin exploring for new sea passages and trade routes for both trade and conquest. </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>1453 End of the Byzantine Empire due to the conquest of the Ottoman Empire </li></ul><ul><li>The concept of Mercantilism is born </li></ul><ul><li>1513 – First formulation of modern politics with Machiavelli’s The Prince </li></ul>EARLY MODERN EUROPE

Portuguese Exploration and War <ul><li>1415 - Henry the Navigator leads the conquest of Ceuta from the Moors marking the beginning of the Portuguese Empire. </li></ul><ul><li>1434 - Exploration of Africa </li></ul><ul><li>1488 - Crossing of the Cape of Good Hope and therefore opening the Indian Ocean to the Portuguese </li></ul><ul><li>1500 - Expedition from Cape Verde leads to new colonization (Modern day Brazil) </li></ul><ul><li>1510 - Conquest of Goa (East Coast of India) </li></ul><ul><li>1542 – Enter the Red Sea to defeat the Turkish armada in Suez Canal </li></ul><ul><li>1580 – 1640 Portugal ruled by Spanish </li></ul><ul><li>1640 - Marks the beginning of the Thirty Years War with Spanish </li></ul><ul><li>Spanish and French invasion of Portugal in 1762 (Seven Years War) </li></ul>
