AERA Journals Collection MAC OS-X Installation Guide

  1. 1. INSTALLING AERA JOURNALS COLLECTION WITH MAC OS-X NOTE: Before you begin, you must have the Mac Classic Environment installed. To view the AERA Journals Collection using Mac OS-X and the Classic Environment please proceed as follows: 1. Using your web browser in OS-X download Internet Explorer 5.1.7 from Microsoft at: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx • Search for IE 5.1.7 for Mac OS 8.1 through 9.x on Microsoft’s download page • Click to download installer (Internet Explorer 5.1.7.smi) in language of choice • Once downloaded, click on the .SMI file to unpack the installer file • Installer should run in Classic Environment 2. Using your web browser in OS-X download Acrobat Reader 5.1 from Adobe at: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/reader_archive.html • Search for Reader 5.1 on Adobe’s archive site • Click to download the Reader 5.1 installer in language of choice • Set installer to run in Classic mode using Finder: File -> Get Info 3. Start Classic Environment or boot Mac OS 9.x 4. Click on the unpacked Internet Explorer 5.1.7 Installer to install IE • Installer should only run in Classic Environment • Follow on-screen instructions to complete installation 5. Click on the Reader 5.1 installer to install Acrobat Reader • Be sure installer is running in Classic Environment • Follow on-screen instructions to complete installation 6. Install the AERA Journals Collection software • Insert AERA Disk #1 and click on the AERALIB desktop (CD) icon • Click on the ‘Install AERA’ icon to start the installer in Classic mode • Select ‘Typical’ installation and click ‘Install’ to begin the installation • If desired, select ‘Yes’ to have a Mac OS-9.x desktop icon installed when prompted 7. Once AERA software is installed, all PDF content must be installed • Insert AERA Disk #2 • Find folder called ‘AERA Journals Collection’ • Click on AERALIB volume (CD) to view all files and folders on the CD • Drag the CD content (except Disk.x file) to ‘AERA Journals Collection’ folder • File structure should look like HardDrive:AERA Journals Collection:AERJ:CD2:…… (where HardDrive is the hard drive volume that contains the AERA installation) • Repeat process with Disks 3 through 11 to install the remainder of the journal content 8. Start the AERA Journals Collection using the alias on the Mac OS-9.x Desktop OR find and execute: HardDrive:AERA Journals Collection:_mac:bin:search 9. A browser-picker program should prompt you to select your Mac OS-9.x browser of choice. • Select Internet Explorer 5.1.7 to view the AERA Journals Collection • If the browser-picker does not start automatically upon initial program execution, find and execute: HardDrive:AERA Journals Collection:_mac:bin:brpicker 10. The AERA Journals program should now display the Home Page using Internet Explorer 5.1.7.
  2. 2. 11. Since PDF documents can only be viewed in Classic Environment using the Acrobat/Reader application, rather than the Acrobat/Reader plug-in, you must now set up Internet Explorer to use the Acrobat/Reader application. This requirement may present the following undesirable side effect if you use a Mac OS-X version of Internet Explorer (i.e. IE 5.2.x) to view PDF files. NOTE: Once you start using IE 5.2.x or later under Mac OS-X with Acrobat/Reader plug-ins installed, IE MAY automatically change the File Helper settings described below for IE 5.1.7 to use the Acrobat/Reader plug-in. This will require you to change the File Helper settings back to use the Acrobat/Reader application before viewing the AERA Journal PDF files. Use the following to set up the IE 5.1.7 File Helper to use the Acrobat/Reader application: • In Internet Explorer (IE) select the EDIT menu item and then select PREFERENCES. • In the left box open RECEIVING FILES and select FILE HELPERS. • In the right box scroll through the MIME TYPES and look for .PDF. Please note the required period {.} before the ‘PDF’. If the entry exists, click on it and then click on the CHANGE button toward the bottom of the box. If it does not exist, click on the ADD button If the entry exists, your window should look similar to this: • After you select ADD or CHANGE, you should see the Edit File Helper window as shown on the next page. • Complete the REPRESENTATION section as shown below. Be sure to include the period for .pdf in the extension entry. • In the FILE TYPE section, click on the BROWSE button and locate the Adobe Acrobat/Reader 5.x application. Once you have located the program, double-click on it and the remaining information in this section should be filled in for you automatically.
  3. 3. • In the DOWNLOAD DESTINATION section, you may either allow IE to use its default Download Folder or select a folder on your hard drive where you want the temporary AERA PDF files to be saved. Either option will work. You may wish to note this location, however, if you want to remove the PDF files after viewing. • In the HANDLING section, select VIEW WITH APPLICATION and click on the BROWSE button. Locate the Adobe Acrobat/Reader 5.x application as you did for the FILE TYPE section and double- click to select it. • Upon completion, the File Helper window should appear as follows: • Click OK twice to return to the main IE window. • You should now be ready to view the AERA Journals Collection under Mac OS-X using IE 5.1.7 and Adobe Acrobat/Reader 5. If you have any difficulties viewing the PDF files, please re-start the AERA Journals Collection application as you did in Step 8 above. PLEASE NOTE: If you start the AERA Journals Collection application and your browser does not display the AERA Journals Collection home page, please enter: http://127.0.0.1:8080/ or http://localhost:8080/ in the Internet Explorer address bar. This should allow you to begin using the AERA Journals Collection. Viewing PDF files using the Acrobat/Reader application may cause an extra Internet Explorer window to open. You may close this window at any time, as it is intended for use when viewing PDFs with the Acrobat/Reader plug-in.
  4. 4. AN ALTERNATIVE INSTALLATION FOR MAC OS-X USERS Since the AERA Journals Collection was not intended to run under Mac OS-X some users may find it simpler to install the software on a system configured to startup using Mac OS-9.x. Once a bootable Mac OS-9.x system has been installed the AERA Journals Collection software may be installed as follows: 1. If you do not have a Mac OS-9.x compatible browser installed, boot up using Mac OS-X. 2. Using your web browser in OS-X download Internet Explorer 5.1.7 from Microsoft at: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx • Search for IE 5.1.7 for Mac OS 8.1 through 9.x on Microsoft’s download page • Click to download installer (Internet Explorer 5.1.7.smi) in language of choice 3. Using your web browser in OS-X download Acrobat Reader 5.1 from Adobe at: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/reader_archive.html • Search for Reader 5.1 on Adobe’s archive site • Click to download the Reader 5.1 installer in language of choice 4. Using ‘System Preferences’ set you system to boot the Mac OS-9.x system 5. Reboot using Mac OS-9.x 6. Click on the unpacked Internet Explorer 5.1.7 Installer to install IE • Click on the .SMI file you downloaded to unpack the installer file • Follow on-screen instructions to complete installation 7. Click on the Reader 5.1 installer to install Acrobat Reader • Depending on the file you chose, the installer may download another file • Follow on-screen instructions to complete installation • You may need to configure your browser to use the Adobe supplied plug-in (see Acrobat/Reader supplied or Adobe on-line documentation to configure IE for plug-in use) 8. Install the AERA Journals Collection software • Insert AERA Disk #1 and click on the AERALIB desktop (CD) icon • Click on the ‘Install AERA’ icon to start the installer in Classic mode • Select ‘Typical’ installation and click ‘Install’ to begin the installation • If desired, select ‘Yes’ to have a desktop icon installed when prompted 9. Start the AERA Journals Collection using the alias on the Mac OS-9.x Desktop OR find and execute: HardDrive:AERA Journals Collection:_mac:bin:search (where HardDrive is the hard drive volume that contains the AERA installation) 10. A browser-picker program should prompt you to select your Mac OS-9.x browser of choice. • Select Internet Explorer 5.1.7 to view the AERA Journals Collection • If the browser-picker does not start automatically upon initial program execution, find and execute: HardDrive:AERA Journals Collection:_mac:bin:brpicker 11. The AERA Journals program should now display the Home Page using Internet Explorer 5.1.7. If your browser does not display the AERA Journals Collection home page, please enter: http://127.0.0.1:8080/ or http://localhost:8080/ in the Internet Explorer address bar. You should now be able to view the AERA Journals Collection using Mac OS-9.x
