  7. 7. RI Board approves Action against Child Slavery June 2009 - Action Group of Rotarians formed to combat Child Slavery. March 2010 - 1st Application for RAG status submitted to the RI Board Jan 2011 - RI Board rejects application Nov 2012 - 2nd Application for RAG status submitted Jan 2013 - RI Board approves RAG status Main aims of the RAG 1. Raise awareness of the existence of slavery. 2. Encourage and help Rotarians to support, promote and work with anti-slavery groups with programmes, campaigns and projects that help to protect children from slavery and its consequences.

Reasons for an Action Group • Global increase in number of child slaves. • Slavery is illegal and therefore needs to be ended. • We need to raise awareness and help clubs to take action. • We need to be reminded of our ethical responsibilities. • Anti-slavery organizations need our support. • The time is ripe to end slavery. • The impetus for action comes from past Rotary leaders.

  31. 31. Sustainable Project: Cows and Bio-Gas Cooking System, India • Project : 4 cows, shed, vet bills and feed for 1 year, construction of bio-gas system. Cost: $5,542 US • Location: Punaranawa Ashram, India, for girls rescued from sex slavery • Results: dairy products; extra milk to sell for income; gas for cooking; fertilizer; means to learn cooking and animal husbandry

Know the Signs • Evidence of being controlled, unable to speak for themselves, no freedom of movement. • Evidence of physical abuse – bruises, scars, wounds. • Fear, disorientation, low self-esteem, depression. • No documentation. • May not speak the predominant language. • Might not identify as a victim.

A Three Year Process: • Undercover grassroots activists enter an enslaved village. • Motivated by the thought of education for their children, parents become bold and hopeful. • A school is built. Kids begin to learn. • Adults learn rights and vocational skills. • By three years, villagers are stronger and self-organized for freedom.
