Unmet expectations are one of the top reasons members resign from Rotary. When there are so many groups, causes, and priorities that people could devote their time to, what's our unique value? Our members need a clear understanding of how they benefit from being part of Rotary. Learning to be honest about the value we bring, both as individuals and as clubs, can help us attract and retain the members that will be the best fit for the long run.

In a recent survey, members were asked to share the reasons they join and the reasons they stay. Which of these ranked highest in both categories?
The majority of respondents said that “Making a difference” was the main reason they join and what keeps them members year after year. The desire to give back to the communities in which they live is what makes being part of a Rotary club such a powerful opportunity.
In the same survey, we asked resigned members to tell us about the reasons they are no longer with Rotary. Which of these do you think received this most responses?
Cost and time was most highly ranked, but unmet expectations was also high.
The three things that Rotarians value most are community service, networking, and friendship. Many prospective members are also seeking global service opportunities. If they don’t get those things from Rotary, they might leave.
Rotary offers countless opportunities for involvement at all levels. Whether it’s serving on a committee, joining a Rotarian Action Group or Rotary Fellowship, mentoring, or doing hands-on service. What we need to do is to make sure we’re connecting each member with the parts of Rotary that mean the most to them and allow them to pursue their passions.

Defining Value
Lead the Excercise
Now I love Mark Twain and this is a big quote to put into any presentation but it speaks to me in a much different way now. (READ SECOND SLIDE) You see, there is truly a difference between BEING a Rotarian and understanding WHY. The power of being a part of this organization is when you find that “why”. And it’s then that you realize all you need is an idea and the sky is the limit of just where it can go. When you have that moment it will change you, not only as a Rotarian, but more importantly as a person. Now I was fortunate – that moment for me was captured on film and I’m going to show that picture to you in a few moments but first I’m going to tell you a story of one very ordinary Rotarian’s journey to Rotary.
The date was Saturday, September 12th, 2015. A fire broke out in the early afternoon and before we knew it, it had ripped through 76,000 acres destroying over 1500 homes and businesses. 4 Firefighters were seriously injured, 5 people lost their lives. At one point over 1/3 of the population of this rural county of 60,000 people was evacuated. The fire was moving so fast that people were driving through flames to get away from it, the rubber melting off their tires, and had only moments to write their phone numbers on the sides of their animals and open the gates hoping they would survive. The devastation was vast and the emotional toll was overwhelming. Where do you even start.
I was sitting here watching my community be devastated and something needed to be done. I had an idea… if we could just raise $50,000 we might be able to help a few people. So the 4 Rotary clubs in Lake County opened a Rotary Fire Relief Fund 2 days after the fire broke and we put together a flier with the details of the fund. I included my cell phone number and email address for information (not recommended by the way based on the hundreds of messages per day ) and most importantly, the Rotary logo. I emailed it to my District Governor and asked if she could send it out. It was in these next few days that I began to understand the power of Rotary, 17 years after I joined. The donations began flooding in from all over the world. $50,000? That came in the first week. Including this donation from a 10 year old girl Emma that lived 4 hours away, not affiliated at all with Rotary. (READ NOTE) When I opened Emma’s envelope and read what she wrote I realized the power of Rotary was even bigger than I thought. Rotary helped her understand the world is bigger than she is and that even she had the ability to make a difference. The power of Rotary. And these donations didn’t come in just from individuals like Emma, local entities and other Rotary clubs from around the world, but I was also contacted by large national corporations. When I asked them why our fund when there were so many other options? The answer was simple – because it’s Rotary, they said, we know that you will get the funds where they need to be. If we could just raise $50,000. The total raised? You see these funds didn’t come in because it had Jennifer Strong’s name, cell phone and email address on it, they came in because of this little logo that we so often take for granted. Oh and as a side note – 100% of these funds were distributed to the fire survivors with ZERO overhead – the power of Rotary.
But why stop there…. The trees in our communities had been destroyed. We’re going to plant 3000 trees in one day we said. The county officials told us that couldn’t be done. But by then we knew different. We are Rotarians. Find us a park to plant them and we’ll make it happen we said. They thought we were crazy but they found us a County Park in the center of the fire area. I put together a flier for a tree planting event, included my cell number and email address and yes – that Rotary logo. We had no idea how many would come but when the school bus holding 54 Junior High School interact students from a couple of Rotary Districts away pulled in we knew the Power of Rotary was still alive and well. On a beautiful Saturday in March of 2017, over 400 people from far and wide and all walks of life, Rotarians and not, came together and helped a community rebuild. We didn’t just plant trees that day – we planted seeds of healing and hope for a bright future. And, by the way, we planted 3500 trees in just 2 hours. The Power of Rotary indeed.
Now, as I mentioned earlier, that moment when I understood WHY I was a Rotarian was captured on film. One of my Rotary hats that I wear is the Ride Director for a cycling event put on by my Rotary Club called the Konocti Challenge. It is on the 1st Saturday in October every year. In 2015, that date was 2 weeks to the day after the start of the devastating Valley Fire. The fire in many areas of our community was still burning and many thought we would cancel the ride but we didn’t. The community needed it and we were going to figure out a way to make it happen. But why stop there. There were hundreds of kids that lost their bicycles to the fire– maybe just maybe we can get a few donated along with some new helmets. And wouldn’t it be nice to have the kids names on those bikes. And wouldn’t it be great to have those kids and their families come to the after ride BBQ to pick up those bikes and have the cyclists be apart of helping them find their bike, fit their seat, and invite them to join them for lunch. A respite from the storm they had been in. Well in just under 2 weeks we were able to get over 200 new bicycles donated, gathered names and ages and have every bike tagged with a child’s name. That day I was so tired I could hardly stand but it was nothing compared to what the fire survivors were going through. I felt a tap on my leg and as I turned around there was this 3 year old little girl standing there with her pink bike, helmet on her head and tears streaming down her face. She said “are you Ms Strong”? She then said “the monster took my bike and my brothers and I are living in the big building still. Then she said - Can I give you a hug?”. Her grandmother then snapped that photo and to this day I will never forget that moment and that little girl. You see that was when I truly understood the power of Rotary. The power that Rotary gives us to not only change the world but also change me as a person.
Read quote. It took me 17 years to figure that out and I believe without a shadow of a doubt there really is no other organization on the planet that can afford us this opportunity to grow so much as a human being. Once we embrace this as Rotarians the changes in us as people are indelible and indefinite and my challenge to each and every one of you is to embrace those magic moments when that “why” becomes clear. That moment doesn’t have to be apart of something big, mine really wasn’t – she was just this tall. Once you find it, embrace it, and live it – the opportunities to affect change in this world through our service in Rotary are limitless.
