  6. 6. Maccabi Interprovincial Sports Tournament April 2012 During the Labour Day weekend in April, WP Maccabi took a contingent of over 80 sportsmen, sportswomen and coaches to Johannesburg to participate in the 2012 Maccabi Interprovincial Sports Tournament (which doubled up as national trials for the 2013 Maccabi Games). Amongst those sports on offer were: Soccer(boys & girls), Cricket, Netball, Squash, Tennis and Table Tennis. On arrival, the contingent went straight to the Apartheid museum, where they learnt a great deal about our South African heritage., after which all the sportsmen and women went to their respective sports venues to have an afternoon training session before shabbat. On the Saturday evening all of the teams and their host families were invited to a dinner where a welcoming speech was made by the Maccabi Chairman, Cliff Garrun, followed by a motivational speech delivered by Stanley Matthews, CEO of the Premier Soccer League. The official opening ceremony took place on the Sunday morning with the guest of honour being no less than the Chief Rabbi, Warren Goldstein. The sun shone and the ceremony went off without a hitch and concluded with singing the National Anthems of South Africa and Israel. The tournament continued over the next 2 days with the WP Maccabi boys and girls giving it their all and conducting themselves with great sportsmanship all round. WP Maccabi are proud to say that XXX sportsmen and sportswomen were selected to represent SA Maccabi at the upcoming World Maccabi Games in Israel in 2013, WP JOU LEKKA DING!!!WESTERN PROVINCE MACCABI “A HEALTHY SPIRIT, IN A HEALTHY BODY”

  9. 9. WP Maccabi Junior Soccer Tour: Johannesburg The games on the Saturday all commenced in the evening after Shabbos, with activities during the day to keep all entertained, including a hotly-contested 5-a-side soccer match between the fathers and coaches. The old saying that ‘if you can’t play, then coach’ could quite aptly be used here! The kids then went to try their hand at ‘Acro-branching’ before returning to the hotel to kit up for their evening games. All the teams played against a combined Johannesburg Jewish Schools team, with Western Province Maccabi being victorious amongst both age groups. This was followed by a social braai for all participants. On the Sunday, all three teams travelled in the morning to Centurion to play against Berea Albion FC where all WP Maccabi teams won their matches. It was then time for the last games to take place with the U11s heading off to Wits FC whilst the under 13s went back to Balfour Park to play against Highlands Park FC. The U11B team played first and went down 0 — 6 to a very strong Wits team, whilst the U11A team did really well to draw 0 — 0. This was the first Maccabi junior soccer tour for these boys and for many their first-ever sporting tour. WP Maccabi will be using this tour as a springboard to providing future tours to all WP Maccabi participants.WESTERN PROVINCE MACCABI “A HEALTHY SPIRIT, IN A HEALTHY BODY”

  13. 13. ISRAEL vs GERMANY: Friendship Cup On Sunday 9th, WP Maccabi invited the Deutsche Internationale Schule Kapstadt to a friendly 5-a-side soccer tournament that was held at the V&A Waterfront. This friendly match was called the “Friendship Cup“ between Israel & Germany and the aim of this friendly match was to strengthen ties between Jewish and non-Jewish communities in the Western Cape, as well as a strive for tolerance, mutual respect and social justice amongst our Jewish community in Cape Town. Matches between Israel and Germany took place amongst the u11 and u13 age groups with Germany ending as overall winners on the day. WP Maccabi handed over a plaque to the school principle of Deutsche Internationale Schule Kapstadt, with the principle donating a floating trophy to WP Maccabi making the Friendship Cup an annual event. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all with new friendships made between the Jewish community and the German community of Cape Town.WESTERN PROVINCE MACCABI “A HEALTHY SPIRIT, IN A HEALTHY BODY”

  15. 15. WP Maccabi NEW Sports 2012 Due to the growing demand, WP Maccabi were able to start two new sports, u9 boys soccer and u11 girls soccer. The u9 boys started training towards the back end of the soccer season, with participation being no less than 15 boys each session. The u11 girls also started towards the back end of the soccer season, but continued their training into the summer season. Just before all the juniors went on holiday, a friendly internal soccer match between the u9 boys and u11 girls took place, resulting in the u9 boys narrowly winning. The girls certainly learnt a lot and had a great time. 18. 18. WP Maccabi Junior Cricket In Oct/Nov, WP Maccabi played various cricket matches vs All Rounders Cricket Academy & WPCC, as well as internal matches within WP Maccabi amongst the mini cricket and u11 age groups. The matches vs All Rounders Cricket Academy & WPCC were very well supported by all with the goal of having many more matches in the new year. Due to an overwhelming demand, from both players and parents , WP Maccabi will be hosting a junior u11 and u13 cricket tour to Cape Town in late March 2013 where teams from JHB Maccabi will be participating amongst the WP Maccabi teams. Plans are already well underway for this event and it will certainly be on of the main attractions for WP Maccabi in 2013!WESTERN PROVINCE MACCABI “A HEALTHY SPIRIT, IN A HEALTHY BODY”

  20. 20. FUTSAL: 12th PAN AMERICAN MACCABI GAMES, BRAZIL On the 25th of December 2011, ten South African Futsal(5-a-side soccer) players set off for Sao Paulo, Brazil to represent their country in the 12th Pan American Maccabi Games. The team was made up of 70% WP Maccabi players which is a result of the sport being hugely popular in Cape Town. With it being SA Maccabi’s first foray into Futsal, it was always going to be difficult to determine just how high the standard would be. While no one in the team went into the tournament with any preconceived ideas as to how they would fare, every single one of them left Brazil with a very clear understanding of what it will take to be competitive at the upcoming World Maccabiah Games in Israel in 2013. Barely moments after returning to South Africa, talk amongst the team started about sending not one but two teams to Israel in 2013 – an open and Masters team – with a number of the current squad having offered their support in making this a possibility. One of the Cape Town based players, Trevor Kramer had this to say “The joy that came with representing South Africa Maccabi in Brazil was truly a life-changing experience and not something that will fade quickly and will forever live in the hearts (and photos) of us lucky few who were able to take part in the 12th Pan American Maccabi Games.” SA Maccabi Futsal are now preparing for the next Maccabiah Games in 2013 and the chance to meet up with the numerous friends that were made in Brazil and of course to have the opportunity to represent our county and culture on the sporting field once again. There are currently six WP Maccabi members in the SA Maccabi Futsal team that will be participating at the Maccabiah Games in Israel next year.WESTERN PROVINCE MACCABI “A HEALTHY SPIRIT, IN A HEALTHY BODY”
