APPLE & AMAZON'S SECRET: “Start with an Awesome WHY. Then, Work Backwards to HOW.”

Apple and Amazon are two of the world's biggest and most successful companies. What's their secret?

Apple and Amazon may have more similarities than differences. A careful study of the business practices of Apple and Amazon reveals that they share a secret that is enshrined in the paradigm and methodology of "Working Backwards." A generic way of expressing that paradigm is as follows: "Start with an Awesome WHY. Then, work backwards to a HOW." This paradigm was expressed by the late Steve Jobs when he said, "Start with the customer and work backwards (to the technology)." Jobs was fond of saying that Apple's goal is to deliver an "insanely great (customer) experience." Jeff Bezos, the Founder and CEO of Amazon constantly advises, "Start with the customer and work backwards."

In this presentation, visual tools are presented for facilitating application of the Working Backwards (WB) Stack as well as Gamification Methodology. The toolkit of the WB Gamification Methodology consists of tools including the template of the Ideal Press Release (IPR) Story and Ideal Product Press Release (IPPR) Story as well as the Business Model Engine (BME). An example on applying these tools is presented.

  3. 3. AMAZON’S WORKING BACKWARDS (WB) STACK OF 4 TOOLS Source: hip://www.allthingsdistributed.com/2006/11/working_backwards.html “The Working Backwards product definiZon process is all about is fleshing out the concept and achieving clarity of thought about what we will ulZmately go off and build. It typically has four steps: 1. Start by wribng the Press Release. Nail it. The press release describes in a simple way what the product does and why it exists - what are the features and benefits. It needs to be very clear and to the point. WriZng a press release up front clarifies how the world will see the product - not just how we think about it internally. 2. Write a Frequently Asked Quesbons document. Here's where we add meat to the skeleton provided by the press release. It includes quesZons that came up when we wrote the press release. You would include quesZons that other folks asked when you shared the press release and you include quesZons that define what the product is good for. You put yourself in the shoes of someone using the product and consider all the quesZons you would have. 3. Define the customer experience. Describe in precise detail the customer experience for the different things a customer might do with the product. For products with a user interface, we would build mock ups of each screen that the customer uses. For web services, we write use cases, including code snippets, which describe ways you can imagine people using the product. The goal here is to tell stories of how a customer is solving their problems using the product. 4. Write the User Manual. The user manual is what a customer will use to really find out about what the product is and how they will use it. The user manual typically has three secZons, concepts, how-to, and reference, which between them tell the customer everything they need to know to use the product. For products with more than one kind of user, we write more than one user manual. Once we have gone through the process of creaZng the press release, faq, mockups, and user manuals, it is amazing how much clearer it is what you are planning to build. We'll have a suite of documents that we can use to explain the new product to other teams within Amazon. We know at that point that the whole team has a shared vision on what product we are going the build.” World’s First SoBware for Ideal Community Problem Solving & Design (CPSD) “Radically Improve the Performance of Every Organiza>on.” Dr. Rod King. rodkuhnhking@gmail.com & @rodKuhnKing

We learn whatever skills we need to service the customer. We build whatever technology we need to service the customer. The second thing is, we are inventors, so you won't see us focusing on "me too" areas. We like to go down unexplored alleys and see what's at the end. SomeZmes they're dead ends. SomeZmes they open up into broad avenues and we find something really exciZng. And then the third thing is, we're willing to be long-term-oriented, which I think is one of the rarest characterisZcs. If you look at the corporate world, a genuine focus on the long term is not that common. But a lot of the most important things we've done have taken a long Zme.”
