The Digital Media Project Source GA16 Date 2007/10/31 Title WIM TV trial at Beijing Olympics No. 1068/Chillout WIM TV trial at Beijing Olympics 1 Background At the 82nd MPEG meeting in Shenzhen some interesting events took place 1. Approval of the Media Streaming Application Format (MS MAF) as ISO/IEC 23000-5. MS MAF was proposed by a group of DMP members in July 2006. The fact that it has taken just 15 months to move from that proposal to Final Draft International Standards (FDIS), the point after which no technical changes are made to the standard, is a remarkable achievement showing that it is possible to execute fast standardisation projects in ISO (or, at least, in MPEG). 2. The launch of an ad hoc group on Digital Item Presentation. This has been caused by the realisation that Digital Item Declaration (MPEG-21 part 2) and Laser (MPEG-4 part 20) are two powerful technologies for information representation and presentation, respectively, but that there is no link between the two, while their integration would find many applications. In particular the MS MAF standard that today only provides a basic infrastructure for the distribution of governed digital resources in streaming format would be enhanced by a native presentation layer. The technology capable of presenting Digital Items would then provide a strong unification factor for today disparate applications such as WebTV, IPTV and Mobile TV which could then unify as Web-IP-Mobile TV (WIM TV). 3. Merge of the MDS group with the Systems group. As the MDS group has completed most of its projects, it has been merged with the Systems group. The merge of the two groups will make it easier to accomplish the DID-Laser integration which would then become the “Native presentation of Digital Items” (because it is achieved exclusively by MPEG standards). 2 The WIM TV standard The MS MAF standard, extended by the integration through reference of the “Native Presentation of Digital Items” standard, would claim at least 3 important features: 1. It provides a single solution for the publication and delivery of governed audio-visual content for a plurality of application domains, e.g. WebTV, IPTV and Mobile TV 2. It can be used for RTP and MPEG-2 Transport Stream delivery 3. It is an ISO standard While extending the MS MAF to include the “Native Presentation of Digital Items” standard may take 18 months, a first cut at it can be specified in a relatively short period of time. Therefore it could be interesting to plan for a first trial of the WIM TV standard for a high profile event in the next 6-8 months.
  2. 2. 3 The WIM TV trial project The Beijing Olympics constitute one such high-profile event. The trial could be directed to common users who could post their User Generated Content (UGC), say with a Creative Common (CC) Licence using the Open Access Content (OAC) Profile, to a Content Provider Device. The recommended type of content would be “discover Beijing during the Olympic Games, but outside of the Olympic Games”. Examples could be 1. The life of a Beijinger during the week end 2. A small corner in the old Beijing 3. A small event that never reaches the media, but is very interesting nonetheless 4. Some nice, unknown places in the Beijing countryside worth visiting 5. Some not well-known historical place in Beijing 6. Commuting experience in Beijing 7. Raising a child 8. ... This project can benefit from the following developments 1. Chillout® the Java Open Source Software (OSS) implementation of the MPEG-21 technologies integrated by the Digital Media Project (DMP) in addition to other native DMP technologies 2. The implementations of DID, CCD, CID, LPD and CPD 3. The Laser reference software (in Java) developed by MPEG or from other sources 4. The Laser authoring tool that may be contributed by a company 5. The Stationary AV Device (SAV) available from Chillout 6. Various attempts being made at porting Chillout to a non-PC device 4 Project components 1.
