This Year Mizu, one of UK’s industry leading new media agencies, is providing the first ‘Internet
Protocol Television’ (ipTV) players for the Rushes Soho Shorts Awards.
In its eighth consecutive year the Rushes Soho Shorts has taken its place at the forefront of the
international short film festival circuit and undoubtedly raised the awareness of an ever-growing
niche in our entertainment business. As the awards have grown in popularity throughout the
industry the response received from the public and international filmmakers has been staggering,
with over 1,200 films entered in 2005. With 5 categories ranging from ‘Music Video’ and
Animation’ to ‘Title Sequence and Ident’ the quality of submission is a testament to the vast array
of filmmakers around the world.
Mizu has developed the Rushes ipTV player to host an archive of 2004 and 2005 award winners
and showcase the 2006 winners and runners up. The range of videos available highlight the ever
growing excellence within the industry from ‘Aardman’s Creature Comforts’ to ‘Dizzee Rascal’s’
much acclaimed ‘The Dream’ music video.
The Rushes ipTV player will be hosted by Openhosting one of the leading web solutions
providers in the UK. Launching on the 3rd August 2006 at the star-studded awards party hosted
by Bill Nighy and attended by over 1,000 guests from the film, advertising, music and media
The Rushes Awards IPTV player is built using technology from one of the night’s sponsors,
Adobe. Delivering to both Mac and PC, the IPTV player is the latest innovative use of Adobe
Flash 8 software. Indicative of the evolution of digital platforms, Flash, celebrating its 10th
anniversary in August, is driving the way people engage with and experience multimedia content.
Sitting within the current Rushes Soho Shorts Awards website the player can provide all the
features of normal TV and more, with high definition encoding and high quality play back, full
screen view and with interactive features throughout.
The player itself is part of a larger ipTV service available from Mizu currently being rolled out
across the country for a number of lighthouse brands and industry sectors. Delivering on-
demand, live or scheduled this service can cater for broadcast quality audiovisual content and
can be tailored to the most basic or complex station requirements.
Modules can be bolted onto the player itself to create a fully functional online TV station with a
Channel and Programme Management System that will manage the content. These modules
include an auto-encoding system that can process the audio and visual content ready for
playback, advertising, sponsorship, pay-per-view and subscriptions modules that can act as
revenue generators. With a firm emphasis upon high-quality brand-driven communication, this
