IP Television and IP Telephony – two new exciting services available in the
At the start of the new academic year ACS will be introducing two new
services in the residences: IP Television and IP Telephony. We are
working with a company called INUK to provide these services.
IP Telephony allows students to use their computer to make and receive
telephone calls. Calls between two people on this service are free. One
of the big benefits to students is that the service is not limited to the
University, their family and friends can use the service on their home PCs,
which means free calls home! This service will also work internationally.
Calls to telephones not on the service are usually much cheaper than
using standard telephone lines or mobiles.
This is a similar service to Skype.
IP Television (IPTV)
IPTV allows students to watch television over the internet on their
computers. The system works in a similar way to any cable, satellite or
digital TV services, except the TV channels are displayed on a computer.
As well as television channels the service includes a number of Radio
stations too. With this service there are 27 channels that students can
receive for free, and 31 premium channels they can subscribe to.
Students can still use other applications on the PC while watching TV or
listening to the radio. Alternatively they can switch to full screen and sit
back and enjoy full screen TV.
The following TV channels are currently available

All residences where this service is available will be able to receive the
free channels by simply registering for the service free of charge. The
students can then subscribe to any channels they want (they don’t have
to subscribe to any). As you can see on the channel line-up there is a
great choice available including many foreign language channels. INUK
are working with other television stations to increase the choice
available. As well as television channels IPTV also provides approximately
25 radio stations including most of the BBC radio stations. Please note
the channels and subscription prices are subject to change.
One exciting opportunity this will provide is access to the Open Student
Television Network (OSTN). OSTN provides channels and programming
dedicated to students. There can be programming dedicated to specific
academic subjects, geographical locations, student life, etc. It will also be
possible for Universities to have their own television stations.
Over the coming academic year the service will be enhanced to included
a number of new features including:
• Audio descriptions for the visually impaired
• Electronic TV Guide
• Program reminders
• Using the computer’s hard drive to record programs
The first areas to receive IPTV and IP Telephony are:

Endcliffe Vale Flats
All of the University new build properties will also be enabled for IPTV and
As the year progresses we will look into rolling out the services in our
remaining University properties.
