- Organic foods. Are they really safer? Possibly more nutritious? When should you buy organic products over conventional? Throughout this presentation I will take you through what it means to be certified “Organic” and compare and contrast the qualities of organic and conventional products.
- People often relate the term “organic” with “all natural” and pesticide or hormone free. However, organic farmers and producers are still allowed to use pesticides, food additives, and processing aids. The USDA seal of ORGANIC means that the farmer/producer has followed the guidelines and terms set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This means that amount of pesticides, additives, etc. used in the growth/production of produces is significantly reduced—if present at all.
- Organic is a label that indicates that the food or other agricultural product has been produced through approved methods by the USDA. These methods integrate cultural, biological, and practices that promote the creation of a safe and healthy environment. Synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, and genetic engineering may not be used. For products that have multiple ingredients such as bread or soup, the label will state which specific ingredients have been designated organic; you can be confident that those specific ingredients have been certified.
- According to a research study that examined the past 50 years of scientific articles about organic and conventional foods, it has been concluded that the difference between the two are not very distant in their nutrient content. So if you are ever contemplating on which to buy just know you’ll be digesting the same nutrients. Just remember that conventional foods contain more pesticides, but the amount of pesticides could be reduce my rinsing of your food.
- Organic foods have proved to have many benefits, just to name a few studies have showed that those who eat organic food and have food allergies, chemicals or preservatives see their symptoms decrease because the amount of food additives and chemical pesticides is lessened in organic. Other benefits include that organic is GMO free which mean that it’s DNA has not been altered. Lastly, organic farming reduces pollution (Air, Water, Soil) by conserving water, reduces soil erosion and using less energy.
- you should consider to buy organic foods which you most consume to avoid long exposure to pesticides, another factor to think about when buying organic produce is to buy those fruits and vegetables with soft outer skins or you eat, for example Apples, Berries, Peaches. You can usually buy conventional products like Pineapple, Onion, Watermelon and Bananas because we do not eat the outer skin of these fruits and vegetables so there is a less amount of pesticides you will be exposed to, by not consuming the outer skin while simultaneously saving you money since conventional products cost less then organic.
- Even though organic is healthy, and usually best to buy because it contains less pesticides and preservatives. Everything has its downsides and for organic its cost of productions which increases the price of food. This is because the farming practices used in organic farming are more costly. Other downsides to this option is that food may spoil faster since fruits and vegetables are not treated with waxes or preservatives. They might also look less the perfect, such as odd shapes, and irregular sizes.
- Consuming organic products does not just improve your health but also improves the environment in many ways. The practices used in organic farming reduce pollution in water, soil and air. These practices are set up to conserve water and reduce soil erosion and instead increase soil fertility. Also by using less pesticides in the process of farming, there is less incidents of workers or nearby animals getting sick from chemicals.

Knowing how to navigate the confusion of food labels, benefits and the various claims producers make can be very helpful while shopping for your goods. Whether you buy organic food for dietary purposes or to help the environment; the choice is yours to make.
