  1. 1. A PRESENTATION BY R.K.SAHOO 6/3/2012 1
  2. 2. Green building is a high performance building design conceptthat aims at creating energy-efficient ,healthy and productivebuilding with minimal impact on the local environment. A global drive in construction industry worldwide by variousnational governments and international entities for improvingthe environmental conditions, sustainability and urban livability. They are real, pragmatic solutions to vexing problemsassociated with climate change, human health andenvironmental quality for sustainable living. 6/3/2012 2
  3. 3. Growing evidence of cost benefits of green buildings.Tax incentives and subsidies for green buildings andrenewable energy concepts.Current trend towards eco-friendly life styles.Demand for sustainable design.Competitive advantages in construction industry. 6/3/2012 3
  4. 4. Reduced operating costs.Government tax incentives.Reduced maintenance costs.Health & safety compliance.Social responsibility & sustainability compliance.Competitive marketing advantages(Higher occupancy,faster lease-up, higher rent) 6/3/2012 4
  5. 5. The LEED stands for Leadership in Energy andEnvironmental Design .The LEED rating is a form of eco-label that rates buildingsaccording to key environmental attributes such as siteimpacts, energy and water use, selection of materials andindoor environmental quality. 6/3/2012 5
  6. 6. The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) hasdeveloped LEED rating system for meeting specific set ofstandards for green buildings.Certified 40-49 pointsSilver 50-59 points.Gold 60-79 points.Platinum ≥ 80 points. 6/3/2012 6
  7. 7. LEED for new construction (LEED-NC).LEED for core and shell (LEED-CS).LEED for commercial interiors(LEED-CI).LEED for existing buildings(LEED-EB). 6/3/2012 7
  8. 8. The key factors for rating of green buildings under newconstruction(LEED-NC).Sustainable site.Energy efficiency and atmosphere protection.Materials and resource conservation.Indoor environmental quality.Eco innovation and integrated design. 6/3/2012 8
  9. 9. Critical to global energy conservation..Increasing global demand for ecofriendly, commercialbuildings .Cost-effective solutions to mitigate the effect of CO2emissions on environmental warming. As benchmarking standard for advanced constructiontechnologies with minimum hazards to the localenvironment. 6/3/2012 9
  10. 10. Use of solar shading and advanced day lighting. Installing renewable energy systems. Using materials for thermal envelope. Installing natural ventilation systems in stead of forced air heating and cooling. Providing reflective exterior surfaces. Usage of advanced heating and cooling technologies. Usage of building energy management systems. Efficient lighting systems . Integrated design process.Source: Intergovernmental panel on climate change(IPCC) 6/3/2012 10
  11. 11. Answer is No.Because of indiscriminate use of concrete and conventionalbuilding materials in urban areas ,the normal atmospherictemperature is relatively higher than areas with few buildings.CO2 emissions from such buildings add to the environmentalpollution and global warming which might result incatastrophic consequences such as: Reduction in agricultural output and global food production. Rise in the sea level in coastal plains. Alteration in ecosystem and biodiversity pattern . Prolonged flooding and copious rainfall in regions receiving abundant rainfall. 6/3/2012 11
  12. 12. Higher upfront capital investment for usage of advancedtechnologies and materials.Lack of knowledge and experienced workforce.Slow diffusion of technological know-how.Deliberate negligence towards ecofriendly concerns.Global economic slump and slow growth in new constructionprojects. 6/3/2012 12
  13. 13. Green landscaping strategy: * Green site creation to harvest rainwater through minimization of runoff loss and bioswales. * Installation of pervious pavements around the building. *Planting xerophytes around the building in order to minimize supplemental irrigation.Usage of high quality and sustainable building materials. * Volatile organic compounds. *Urea formaldehyde. Culprits of health hazards . *Particulate matter.Sustainable roof options-Photovoltaic roofs.Sustainable energy options. Distributed energy resources. Geothermal systems or ground source heat pumps.Sustainable interiors. 13 6/3/2012

  15. 15. 1. Adobe Systems Inc. In 1999, Cushman and Wakefield a global real estate services provider with a track record of sustainable building operations undertook the green building renovation work at Adobe Towers, San Jose ,CA Adobe Systems Inc. has achieved 5 LEED certifications and 4 out of which are at platinum level. Adobe realized a total savings of $ 1.2 M of which $ 98,000 per year was in electricity costs savings. 6/3/2012 15
  16. 16. 1 CarbonSystems A real-time ,web-based platform that provides access to a buildings environmental profile including it’s energy, gas and water usage.2 CA ecosoftware An enterprise class energy and sustainability management solution to measure and report accurately energy, water, and carbon in buildings.3.Enablon GHG-MS It is a greenhouse gas emission reporting and management software.4.Enviance A carbon management solution that offers consistent, transparent and accurate understanding of greenhouse gas emissions inventory and carbon monitoring.5.Hara ESS A cloud based platform for energy and sustainability management. 6/3/2012 16

  18. 18. Zero-Energy Buildings (ZEB) : In order to achieve net-zero-energyuse, building energy demand should be reduced by 60-90 % overcurrent standards and the remainder would be satisfied by on-siterenewable energy generation such as solar, wind and geothermaltechnologies.According to ,United States National Renewable EnergyLab(NREL), ZEB produces as much energy as it uses whenmeasured at the site.(Net –zero site energy building). 6/3/2012 18
  19. 19. Photovoltaics is a method of generating directcurrent electricity by converting the solar radiationof sun into electric energy by use of solar cells. 6/3/2012 19
  20. 20. Eco-Cement : Eco-cement is a CO2 absorbing cement.Usually Magnesia (MgO) is added to the normal Portland cementin order to sequester the CO2 ,the main gas responsible forenvironmental pollution and local warming effect . Source: < > 6/3/2012 20
  21. 21.  Bamboo Snapping deck tiles: Bamboo deck tiles can be used for roof decking. Eco-friendly slats have a high SRI and they help mitigate any heat-island effect. 6/3/2012 21
  22. 22. Green Living wall: Vertical vegetated surface systemthat can be used on exterior walls, interior walls and freestanding units. 6/3/2012 22
  23. 23. Cool Wall contains specialized heat reflective pigments andit can be used as an exterior paint for weather –ability .Cool wall reflects the infra-red portion ofthe sun’s rays ,keeping exterior surfaces cooler and allowingless heat into the interior of the building. 6/3/2012 23
  24. 24. The recent advances in nanotechnology ,information technology ,andrenewable energy technologies have created opportunities for energy-efficientgreen buildings. With growing demand for sustainable, eco-friendly and socially responsiblelifestyle has necessitated the construction of green buildings towardsachieving the goal of a greener planet in foreseeable future. The global demand for retrofitting the existing building structures into greenbuilding standards in accordance with Energy Star ,ISO 50001& LEED inorder to achieve the energy efficiency and sustainable environmentalstandards is on rise. This innovation in sustainable building technologies is not only abenchmarking standards for next generation buildings but also safe practicesfor curbing global warming and environmental pollution. 6/3/2012 24
